It seems that VIR is reserving the North paddock for their charity laps on Friday.  As a result of this, our registration and tech will not take place in the North buildings as usual, rather we are going to do them on the skid pad and pavilion behind the fuel pumps.  See map here:

  • All arrivals before 5pm will be staged on the skid pad by VIR security.
  • Tow vehicles and trailers only on skid pad.  All personal cars should park in the grass marked in yellow above.
  • Once the skid pad is full, overflow parking will be in South paddock.
  • At 5pm, VIR will let everyone into North paddock.
  • If you already have an annual tech, it is advised to show up after 5pm.
  • Registration will remain open an extra hour (7pm) to accommodate the delay in paddock entry.

We've had a lot of races in the past 12 months and a lot of cars in those races fighting for a chance to be invited to the championship.  The time is now.  Who will prevail over 30 other top teams?  Who will survive the cold air, hot tires and loose bolts for 16 hours?  In a week, one team will leave with the Galvatron trophy and be able to forever claim they were the best team in endurance racing for 2016.  Will it be you?

Chumpionship Teams - The teams that qualified for the Chumpionship are highlighted in red on the pit assignment list.  If you believe that you qualified and are not highlighted on the list, email me.  I'm human and miss things.

2016 Banquet - We're hosting the 2016 end-of-year banquet on Saturday night at the Gallery at VIR.  Doors open at 5:30pm and dinner is at 6pm.  Full southern buffet with a cash bar.  The cost is $12 per person and tickets are available here.  Tickets can also be purchased on site.  You've got to eat anyway and since you can't work on your car, you might as well hang out with your fellow racers and bench race!

Gates - Teams will have access at 12pm on Friday.  Please be courteous during move-in as VIR is hosting charity laps on track during the day.

Tech - If you haven't been tech'd yet in 2016, or have made a change to your car, bring your car through the tech line and let Phil and Dan take a look.  Make sure to have your paperwork with you and filled out.  No paperwork and Phil is likely to put you in EC.

Registration - Once tech is completed (whether here or earlier in the year) bring your yellow log book to registration and get checked in.  To speed this up, make sure you are fully paid and your driver roster is correct ahead of time.

Pit Assignments - A few additions.  Here is your updated pit assignment list.

Supplemental rules - Just a reminder to take a look at the supplemental rules for this event.  They can be found here.

QUESTIONS:  If you have questions about the race, registration or payment process, email me and I will respond ASAP.

We're looking forward to seeing y'all in VA!

All the best -
The Eastern ChumpStaff

Who is going to be running live video? It's really easy using a cell phone.
go to https://medium.com/…/i-want-to-live-stream-with-racecast-me…

Bill Strong (me) will be using a much more complicated setup. A GoPro Hero5 will be connected to a Cerevo LiveShell 2. The LiveShell 2 takes the HDMI signal from the GoPro, and converts to to a wireless signal that is transmitted to a Verizon Jetpack for transmission to RaceCast.me. Power to all devises is run from a 26,700mAH battery that has 3x USB ports and can be charged via a 5v USB plug wired into the cars electrical system.

Like was said at the top, to do a simple setup, get an active smartphone, either Apple or Android.

1. Sign Up for a free account at https://live.racecast.me/signup.
2. Choose “Smartphone / Tablet“ from https://live.racecast.me/setupand download the Wowza GoCoder App for your phone using the link provided.
3. Click the green “Configure Apple” or “Configure Android” button that corresponds to your phone type on the smartphone setup page https://live.racecast.me/setup/smartphone This will launch the Wowza GoCoder App on your phone and ask you to overwrite existing settings, choose YES.
4. Push the red circle button in the bottom right corner of the Wowza GoCoder App to begin streaming, then visit https://live.racecast.me/profile (on a device other than the phone you are streaming from) to view your live stream!
5. (Optional but recommended) Set a Profile Alias for your profile page so you have a personalized (and easy to remember) URL for your family, friends and fans to view your broadcasts (live and replays), do this in your account settings https://live.racecast.me/settings

Also think about using live video in your pit. Let us watch your pitstops!

ok...

Main feed page...

This will be the main coverage. Paulie has some family commitments in the morning, but once those are done this will be live.

I have one towercam setup... it is here...

https://live.racecast.me/event/583461fd398c8be20b494f7f#top

My other towercam seems to have been wrecked in transit, or because it got rained on in California. Will replace later.

Looks like there are 5 in-car cameras. I have my MR2 wired and so it Troys MR2. so watch those. Warning, those afraid of fast cars or "speed creep", please watch the E30s.

I have a race to run tomorrow. I will try and get another camera on the starters tower looking at turn 1 and turn 2/3. But they may be later. I am the first driver in the car, and I have a mission ton put some yellow paint on that green car. Most likely as he passes me. Troy is in the car first too.

And, WRL at COTA has 78 cars with the fast lap at 2:56.   Surprising they are a way slower group than Chump.  I thought they had more tweaked out cars,  hmmmm

It's raining there

Not more tweaked, regulated by more stable rules perhaps.

If you want time comparisons, look at the results from earlier this year in February.

%#@&$*!

This was heard from our pits....

TL/DR: Our first race back after an 18 month hiatus.  Warped head.  Oil in the water.  No spare.  2 hours of racing, and we loaded it into the trailer.  Just got home.

We used to have an M30 in our car, but kept exploding transmissions, so we went back to the M20.  When the M30 was in there, we used a larger radiator from either and E34 or E28 (I forget which).  It fit in the e30, but we had to cut out the lower mounting tabs.  When we reinstalled the M20 radiator, I guess our master fabricator forgot about them thar old tabs being gone.

About 90 (ish) minutes into the race the temp spiked in the snake.  I brought the car in that lap.  We found that the radiator had decided it no longer wanted to remain in the car, and was trying to escape out the bottom.  The lower hose had come off, and we managed to water the track somewhere.  We reinstalled the radiator, rigged up engineered a suitable temporary mounting bracket, filled it up with water.  We checked the oil, and no froth in it, so I went back out to finish up my stint.

Temps we fine.  Came back in 20 mins later.  Checked the water level.  It was lower, and had oil mixed in with it.  We assume best case scenario, is a blown head gasket.  Probably a warped head (or worse) as well.  Decided at that point, to park it, since we didn't want to blow the engine.  Frustrating after being away for so long.

Some random thoughts on the weekend:

- It was awesome seeing everyone again.  Chumps are the best. It was like we weren't gone for 18 months.

- I miss the TQ of the M30, but none of the other BS with it

- The cars are a lot faster now

- I was expecting to freeze my azz off this morning in the first stint.  It wasn't bad at all

- The Purple 35 flag at VIR is an experience.  Lots of folks still caught up to the folks in front of them.

- Restarts from 35 MPH are "interesting".  three wide chaos fo sho

- Speaking of Purple 35..We at before we left.  While sitting on the picnic tables under the barn, we saw the old Questies (forget their new name) Escort actually following the rule by themselves.  It was impressive.  Worth every penny though, to see them get passed by the tow truck!

- Got passed multiple times in one stint under yellow :( Frustrating.

- When we were leaving the lodoge, I saw a car on the grass in between turn 4 and 5.  I assume that their exhaust started a grass fire.  Their drive did a quick bail out.  The VIR staff came over and from a distance appeared to casually extinguish the fire.  VIR staff are the best!

- It sucks leaving at noon on a saturday of a 16 hour race.

Lastly, in a very sad note, we found out that the son of our longtime crew chief passed away last night.  His son has crewed for us a few times as well.  Please keep his family in your prayers.

-Chris
