Yeah, there is a lot of money sitting there. The cage is from S&S $1200 in materials alone.

Don't be scared away by the 305, they can run with the 350's if you know what you are doing. I would however upgrade to a stick. While our auto had no mechanical issues, it was the best thing for road racing, even with some upgrades it never seemed to be in the right gear.  The 5 speed made the car much easier to drive and faster on the track. 305 w/ 5 speed

That 305TPI should be 195hp. You can run it that way, but there's also more ponies out there for free with the way the VPI table is set up. The valuation is the same up to the 350TPI rated at 245hp. Swap up the motor, get a 9 bolt axle with better ratio and LSD and campaign the car as a '92.

We ran a 255hp vortec with with holley carb, headers, etc (270+hp) and had a 700R4 very reliable with a huge cooler, so it can be done with the auto. The diff ratio makes a difference, but typically 3rd is where you live. When we sold it, the new owner put in a Muncie.

We have the 9 bolt 3.45 (or 3.54) and LSD in our 84 T/A. The old 10 bolt is a peg leg 3.75 gear. We also used the a/c condenser for our cooler...no points that way. We are using an 88 305 formula (roller) motor, with the stock 84 intake and quadrobog...along with cam and headers. The 84 305 spun a bearing at our last race. We'd like to jump up to a T-10, but for now the stock 5 speed will do.

FYI, the 9 bolt never came in a 92.  The 305 TPI was within 10hp of the 350 TPI depending on which factory exhaust the car came with.

Did the borg stop at '90?

Was there a game being played with hp ratings? I thought the '88 305TPI with auto was rated at 195, and manual trans rated at 220. You are right though, in '88 the 350 was only rated at 230hp. My only real point is that, per the rules, you can go swap up a 245hp 350TPI for free. I would take the power since it's already accounted for.

I think there was a little bit of underrating on the 305 and over rating the 350.  TPI was designed for the 305.  The stock intake for the 350 was a huge bottleneck for power.  That spawned siamesed runners and all sorts of different intake setups.  I have not kept up on my 3rd gen knowledge.  But there is still way more floating in my head than I will ever need.  It all stems from my 92 Trans Am.  Since it now just sits in a corner and doesn't get used, I have sort of moved on.  Eventually I will be able to recoup the tens of thousands of dollars I have in the go-fast bits.  It's sad really, they are wonderful cars.  But time has marched on and the 425hp that it has is no longer fast.  I should have just sucked up the extra $3k it was going to cost to swap in an LS and T56 at the time (01 ish).  Either way, if you are going to swap in a manual trans, don't use a stock T5!  They could barely handle the 305 TPI in hard street driving.  They were offered behind the 350 TPI for one or two years until the warranty claims were starting to eat GM alive.

Wow, just used the swap formula.  Swapping in an LS motor puts it at 1864!!  Sounds like the calculator isn't all that accurate.

It really punishes cars for trying to get over the target power to weight ratio via swap.

Start with the 350TPI, put a better manifold on it (50 pts) and a good carb (50 points), header, (25pts) and get it up near 300hp and the car is only at 325 points. You could add a cam for another 50. Spend some points on chassis and suspension, put a +2 gallon cell, and you are still a little short of 2 hours at most tracks, but should have a really good car.

Ours (9 bolt) came out of our 88 Formula. The 305TPI was rated at 210 and the 5 speed beat the 350 (auto only) in 88 in the 1/4 mile. We are looking at making some fast lap times in our freshened up 305 this year....

if you do all that to the 305 you'll be over 300hp.  add cam $50 and home port work and you'll be way over 300hp...

I do have a 5speed and pedal set that goes with the car, also have a borg warner 9 bolt with 3:43 gears and disc brakes that goes also. just needs cleaned up and installed.
