snowman
Hey everyone, new Chump here. I'm building a Miata right now and planning our first race for Thompson in September (giggity). Before I get in over my head though (already neck deep), I figured it would be a good idea to volunteer for team and try to learn the ropes a little bit. To see what its like to go through tech, team organization, pit stops, etc. So if anyone wants/needs crew help, and willing to let me be your shadow, I'm your guy. Miata teams are a plus, but willing to help anyone. If you are a team in Connecticut, even better. I'd be happy to come help prep the car on work days. A little about me....I have been to ChumpCar races, and drove in a race in the other series, so I'm not totally clueless as to how things work. I'm not a mechanic, but I know the open end from the box end of a wrench. I can do the basics. I'm willing to be a team player and do whatever I can to help. Even if that means being a gopher sometimes. I have all my safety gear, so if you need someone to go over the wall, I can help.
Administrators E. Tyler Pedersen Posted March 3, 2017 Administrators Report Share Posted March 3, 2017 I will be there racing with @wvumtnbkr. Feel free to come by and say hello in the powerful RX7 we will be running. Welcome to Chump! Also there are a lot of guys around here running Miatas so you are in good hands. @Z06LOL did a good job at building one and debuting it last year at Gingerman. snowman
Thanks for the Welcome! I'll definitely swing by and say hello to you guys. @Z06LOL, if you are willing to share any general pointers, or things to avoid, it would be greatly appreciated. mcewena
Volunteer as a pit marshal instead. You'll see the other side of the fence, you'll be up close to the teams to watch how they refuel with plenty of slow time to pick their brains. Plus you'll earn funny-money towards your future events and learn which teams are good guys (hint they give you beer). Hi_Im_Will
As @mcewena said, volunteering is probably your best bet. Come chat with us, or Rob and Tyler during the slow bits. Although, if you want to hang out in the pit stall and hold the extinguisher I won't say no.

snowman
Currently building it. Cage and fire suppression is getting finished up this weekend, and I get it back on Monday.

My recommendation is to spend as much time now as possible on making the car reliable without using any points. Once you have proven your car is reliable, then look into modifications Also my personal opinion is to make safety the number one priority, we have more money in safety in our car then anything else. PM me with any questions you may have Miata related, there is also a ton of Miata guys on here whom all have been helpful.

snowman
Thanks @Z06LOL. Reliability is definitely our focus. To finish first you must first finish right....so just finishing is my goal. I get the car back tomorrow and plan to inspect parts throughout the week, so I'll probably message with something. Yeah @miatainium, I'm full of bad ideas that cost lots of money. At least it's funny though!

One of my regulars just had some major surgery so I need someone that can work under a really good, experienced crew chief. If you are interested, let me know -- we have been doing Chump for about 4 years now (in our fifth year), and finally moderately successful and it almost looks like we know what we are doing.........We plan on being in WG on Thursday afternoon the 25th. djsteviec
We will be there, Baller Racing Team Honda CR-X. We don't mind you coming around and can certainly use another hand. I am the team owner and in Wallingford. We will also be next to Team Punisher GP from CT.
agleaso1
Precision Touch Detailing Racing will be there as well. We just finished up our Miata and it is going for its first autocross shake down Saturday. You can follow our build on Facebook just look up Precision Touch Detailing Racing. We did A LOT this year. This is my second Miata build, last one was an SSM autocross car; supercharged. This car is built for reliability, picking up a refreshed engine this week and all wear components in the suspension have been replaced. Make no mistake we expect there to be issues, we just don't know what yet. Stop by and see us while you are there, we are located 25 minutes south of the track in Corning NY.
