What components goes where - battery vs ignition relay vs fuel pump relay?

Recommended Posts

Hi

What accessories/components do you put where and why?

This is my list:

Always on (12v from battery when kill switch is in on)

- Some dash gauges (useful for trouble shooting)

- Transponder

- Comns

- Various USB crab (GoPro/...)

Ignition relay (on when you flip the switch):

- ECU

- Electric fan (thermostat manual on/off)

- Weather accessories (Wipers, Defogger, cool box)

- Starter solenoid (via button and maybe relay)

- Wideband module

Fuel pump relay (on when engine is running):

- Fuel pump

- Injectors

(To clarify when kill switch is off EVERYTHING is off).

I have it setup to where the kill switch starts power on the car but everything is controlled by a switch.  I have switches for fuel, ignition, gauges, cool suit, usb ports, etc.  I feel like I do not like to have everything turned to hot power when the killswitch is on.

My fuse block is bussed and I don't use relays (heavy gauge wire and HD switches), so everything has power in or on with the main kill.  Gauges, comm, USBs, etc all turn on/off with the main kill (similar to acc2 on a stock ignition switch).  The ECU, FP, and all intermittent accessories (fans, wipers, coolsuit, etc) are individually switched after the block.

Same setup, but have certain items powered with the main switch, radio and gauges.

ECM, Fans, fuel pump, trans cooler, cool suit, driving lights, are all on toggle switches.

The only things going through the master on my car is main battery on the big terminals and key-on power to the ECU on the small terminals in series with the ignition switch. I can leave the master on with no power drain as long as all the other switches are off.
