Watkins iRacing Practice

Recommended Posts

Is anyone interested in doing some iRacing at Watkins prior to the May race?

I am just getting into iRacing and have been trying to get a handle on both the driving and the track.  Driving around by myself is getting a bit old.  Having never done any sort of race or practice with any other people/cars, I have no idea how that all works, but can probably set it up if anyone is interested.

I created the CRAP league on iRacing for just this sort of thing. I set up a bunch of events over the last couple years, but they were very sparsely attended, so I largely gave up. But I'm happy to try again!

Go to the League section on iRacing and search for CRAP or CrapCan and you'll find it. Ask to join the league and you will get notifications of events.

The first event is a 2 hour open practice on Saturday, April 15 at 1 PM Eastern (10 AM PST). The weather is iRacing default (78°F, 55% humidity, 2 mph N). There are 5 cars to choose from: Global MX-5 Cup, MX-5 2015, Spec Racer Ford, Street Stock, and VW Jetta. For balance, the Street Stock and Jetta have added ballast (200, 100 respectively).

Let me know if there's a more convenient time and I'll set up an event then. It would be great to get a bunch of people on. In the past, we've done stuff like Indian Runs (form a single-file line running at 95% pace, the last driver must work his way to the front, which triggers the next driver to do the same).

Weekends are tough for me, not sure about everyone else. I've also found that leaving the session open for anyone to join makes it a bit more fun. One of the daytona Practices I hosted had 40+ people over the course of 2 hours and the race at the end was like 15 cars. Though they weren't all chumps they are real people, and indicitive of the range of skill at a real race.

I also like running one car, it let's everyone learn from each other and compare themselves against whatever the fast lap time is.  Miata is probably the closest to a typical 4/6 cyl chumpcar.

Just my $.02 - I'll happily join any practice session I can make!

Count me in, but Saturdays are hard to do. Not impossible, but I have my son on alternating weekends. Any weekday night but Tuesdays.

@gr1vlet may have to talk me through my G27 issues. (sorry RJ, but I have serious retention issues from out talk on Saturday...)

If nothing else, my participation virtually GUARANTEES plenty of passing opportunities so it's just like the real thing!!!

Of course I have other issues as well, but those are for another forum entirely...:P

Ok, so how about we do this, (blatantly copied from the Daytona practice thread):

Next Thursday, April 20th.  I will give a test run as a first time host and come up with a name.

Practice:            7:00 PM (EST)

Qual:                   8:20-8:30

Race:                  8:30-9:00

Race:

Rolling start

Unlimited fast repairs

3 cars, single class

Cars:

Global MX5 Cup

Iracing baseline setup

Closest to 4 & 6 cyl chumpcars

Street stock

500 lbs ballast added

Closest to 8cyl 'merican chumpcars

Jetta

100 lbs ballast added.

Just so the FWD crowd can join in on the fun too!

I will leave it as an open session for anyone to join.

OK what wheels do you guys run? I would order tonight so I can join you guys for sure.

Thrustmaster T300. Buy just the servo when the prices go under ~$170, get a stock wheel off ebay for ~$40. It's worth the price over the Logitech G2x. Then buy a set of Elite CSR pedals (~$200) with a forced based brake pedal. I wish I did this right the first time.

Wow at 129 that's hard to beat.

Another option is to look for a used g27 on Craigslist. I paid $140 for mine and added the gteye progressive brake spring and I'm really happy with it. The csr elite pedals are much better and closer to real pedal feel though. If $ allows go that route.

My setup is cheap, but I typically run within the top 50 overall in the mx-5 Cup using the g27 bolted to my makeshift tv cabinet rig with a 60" 1080p tv and walmart roll'y chair with the wheels removed.

As with anything else buy the best you can reasonably afford, but for anyone reading this worried about the costs involved it is possible to get going and be competitive on the cheap. One thing I would try to ensure is that your computer can run iracing at 100-140fps. $100ish modern graphics cards can achieve that.

I use a Logitech Driving Force GT wheel, which I picked up used for $50. The pedals are from a G25 (also used) but I also have a $300 hydraulic brake pedal which feels exactly like a real brake pedal because it's pushing fluid onto a load cell.

For the Street Stock, 500 lbs may be a little too much. Also, if the setups are fixed, make sure that the road setup is selected.

He copied that from my Daytona setup where even with 500 lbs and a bit of gear reduction the street stock was about 4s faster at daytona than the miata. Watkins has a few more turns though...

I just ran all 3 cars through some tests at WGI. Default weather. Fastest lap reported below.

2:13.530 Jetta, baseline setup +100 lbs, 3.64 gal/hr

2:14.342 MX-5, baseline setup, 6.67 gal/hr

2:14.437 Street Stock, road setup +500 lbs, 17.1 gal/hr

So I withdraw my recommendation. +500 is fine for Street Stock at WGI. But the Jetta needs more ballast. Maybe add another 100?

EDIT: Well, I just did another session and I found more time in the Mazda. Maybe the Jetta doesn't need more ballast.

I actually did the same last night, I managed:

2:14.287 Miata, baseline setup
2:14.224 Street stock, road setup +500lbs

I didn't watch any video or do many laps so while my lines are probably wrong they are consistent between both cars, haha.
