Shock boots

Do you guys care about the boots to cover your shock piston?  We have a set that are tearing when catching between the shock body and the coilover spring so that the piston is exposed.  I noticed a bunch of top teams over the weekend that didn't seem to have any boots ont heir cars.

Is it something I need to worry about?  Or just set the pistons free to blow in the breeze (and dirt and dust and etc)?!
