Racer28173
Someone needed to get a post-race thread going so that everything doesn't just end up in the pre-race thread, so I figured I'd throw this up here. Does anyone have day 2 race results? We broke catastrophically enough that we left an hour before it ended...
Racer28173
https://www.race-monitor.com/Results/Session/6039847 Looks like Premium Dudes won both days - congratulations guys! This was a reliability race for sure, but you guys were doing some really fast laps to boot. Spartan had great speed but must have broken at some point because there was no way you guys were going to make up your laps on just pace. Nate - thanks for the brake fluid. I hope the beers I traded for it tasted good in that hot Chicago weather after the race!
thomasp
Sunday's race. I was watching the Race Monitor and Spartan's in-car camera. Premium Dudes passed Spartan to get back on the lead lap with about an hour to go. They were chipping away at the interval, a few seconds a lap. The driver of Spartan did an awesome job holding off the charging Premium Dudes driver. There were lots of laps where the difference was less than a second or they matched. It was very exciting to watch. Alas, with about ten minutes to go, Spartan ran out of fuel {you could hear the fuel pump thumping on the in-car feed}. Administrators E. Tyler Pedersen Posted June 5, 2017 Administrators Report Share Posted June 5, 2017 Copied from the other thread: It was awesome seeing everyone at the track and meeting new people as always. Thanks to Mike, Dan and Chelsey and all of the volunteers at the event. Can't believe there were 6 volunteers at the event. It made the pit awareness pretty awesome for everyone and reminded us about the safety of what we are doing. I has the privilege to drive with @enginerd and @red0 for the weekend in the e30. The south course was a lot of fun, yes there were some bumps but sometimes you have to know where they are and how to avoid them. I was afraid our driver did not know he was in first at the FCY with the course change over and that we would blast in the back of Mike's rental Denali, luckily that transition was smooth. It seemed like everyone had a problem on Saturday and we were able to climb back and grind out our laps after losing a rear brake line and getting it fixed quickly. Sunday was a lot of fun and the north course was busy (I loved the esses part of the track where you could make up a lot of time). Not many breaks and I think I only took one drink out of my water in the 2 hour stint. I will let @enginerd post his full race report for the overall days. I am really sore today from my forearms to my legs, I feel like I got hit by a bus. See you all in two weeks at NCM.

iampkrfn
I had a great weekend driving with the #19, we ended up winning A class overall by a bunch because we were able to stay on track for the most part. I'd be hesitant to blame the track for the failures, there were bumps...but I didn't think it was that bad. Thanks to the Chump staff and the volunteers, everyone was great to deal with and other than a hiccup with Live Timing at the start of Sunday's race (not Chump's fault) which made it real confusing for a bit ("are we yellow?, are we green?") everything ran flawlessly that I saw. The facility is great, and the variety of track configs in the schedule was awesome! We were talking about how long the splitter on the ecotech miata was going to last, and we found out. The driving was pretty courteous for the most part from what I saw, the people that were not playing nice got a talking to. I think the low car count helped a lot - Saturday's race would have been a bit crazy if we had 60+ cars. I was driving the black Maxima (JSK #176) on Saturday from 9:00 - 11:00 and again from 3:30 to 5:00. If anyone had any issues with me, please PM me with your feedback. At one point in my stint the black VW (I think that was the car) started weaving back and forth in front of me as I closed in on him. I don't know if that was to signal displeasure about an earlier pass or if he was trying to figure out if his suspension was broken/damaged (since their were a LOT of people, including us, that had those sorts of issues) Because we spent a bit of time behind the wall, I missed a lot of the on-track news. Did we have a car get destroyed in a crash - I never saw a crunched car in the paddock but I heard a rumor
enginerd
This Autobahn event was full of great driving, cars breaking, car fixing, and more great driving. Weather couldn't be beat (ok, 10-20 degrees cooler would have been nice), and the facility was wonderful. ChumpCar staff and volunteers were wonderful as always (I'm amazed at how punctual and smooth everything is wth Mike Chisek in control). Saturday - I was in the car first on Saturday, had great racing with JSK for a half-dozen laps until they pulled away. Followed the Junk in the Trunk e30 for the better part of an hour, and ran a clean stint. We were in 3rd (I think) after I pitted at 2 hours and gave the car over to @red0. After an hour in the car he radios in that the brakes failed in turn 1 and pedal was on the floor, he kept it off the grass (I hope we have that on GoPro!!) and brought it back to pit lane. We quickly diagnosed a right rear brake hose failure and I ran to the trailer for a spare. 12 minutes later @Crank Yankers Racing had replaced the hose, we bled in a new bottle of fluid and Andrew was back on the track having dropped to 15th place or something like that. Andrew, Tyler, and Steve drove great stints while the rest of the field played 'mechanical failure whack-a-mole', where every leading team would have some kind of issue to fix. Spartan Racing blew a clutch, JSK had electrical issues followed by other issues, B.A.R wore to their brake pad backing plates and had to replace, MiElan broke suspension, Clueless racing had to replace tie-rods, Junk in the trunk had to do a wheel bearing... etc. etc. Our car (now named 'Allis') had no other issues for the day, so by the time I got in the car for the last stint we had a 27 minute lead (our lead was aided a bit by the course switch... we had a 3 lap lead on south which was just over 5 minutes but became 9 minutes once the course changed to full configuration). The differential was now making a funny noise and tires were nearly bald, so I milked our lead and ran a consist 20-30 seconds off-pace until the checker (trying my best to stay out of the way of cars who were still racing for position). Sunday - We started with 4 penalty laps (Sunday was a 6 hour and Saturday was 12, so the MOV was cut in half), which was roughly 5 minutes of penalty on the short north course. Steve ran a blistering first stint, Tyler ran an even faster 2nd stint and pitted under the fortunate pace-car FCY at the 4 hour mark. Larry got in and beat the pace car off pit road by about 5 seconds to get another lap back which found us starting the last stint in 2nd place, 1.5 minutes behind Spartan who was leading. He whittled the lead down to 30 seconds with 20 minutes left when we saw that we just could not catch them, we flagged Larry to slow his pace and protect the car (we were ahead of 3rd place by 2 laps now). Then, tragically, Spartan rolled down the main straight with no power with just 10 minutes left (something fuel related, I talked with them after the race and they said it wasn't out of fuel, it was probably an issue with the fuel pickup / fuel pump thing). We cruised to our 2nd win of the weekend and we couldn't be happier. Were it not for more reliability problems for JSK, Junk in trunk, BAR, Spartan, Misfire, and more, we wouldn't have been able to make up the deficit. Was nice meeting a lot of people I had chatted with online, but I'm so poor with names and faces, forgive me if I forget by the next event!! Allis lived up to her name (I think Steve and Tyler named her.. something like "with the glasspack muffler burned out, this car sounds like a tractor... yea, and it runs like a tractor too, just keeps going and going and going.... and it's orange, like Allis-Chalmers colors...") by giving us reliable performance all weekend, our drivers were excellent (once again I was the slowest on the team), and we won a couple wars of attrition. See you all at Gingerman!! -- comments on the track -- Autobhan south is now my favourite course, I just love how the fast sweepers flow into each other and you can make up a lot of ground if you can carry speed through them. It's definitely a handling track, and there aren't many "easy" turns, a few sacrifice corners and double-apexes keep things interesting, and there is almost no time to rest to find the drink bottle hose!! I didn't mind the undulations in turn 5 (fast left hander), my preferred line after trying a couple different ones through there was to miss the apex by 4 feet so as to avoid the bumps. Others on the team said they ran the apex line even with the bumps. The bumps made that turn more interesting! There were some rough pavement sections but it really wasn't bad at all in my opinion. We don't have a splitter so we aren't as sensitive to track roughness. Edited June 6, 2017 by enginerd

Racer28173
A big congrats to the Blue Shells guys and the 2nd place finish on Saturday. They really demonstrated how you can do well even if your car isn't killer fast. Their best lap was a 1:45. More than 75% of my laps were faster than that 1:45 lap time (if memory serves correctly), but the results show my car 11 positions behind them. I lapped them a number of times out on course, but they lapped us a lot more when we (and a bunch of other cars) were in the pit/paddock. Nice job guys - you showed the guys with the "slower" cars that reliability can still get you a podium. Thanks as always to Mike C and the team. Mike is always very accessible at the races and answers any and all questions. Thank you to all of the workers too - it was HOT out there.

We pitted next to them with our trailer and the problem was a fuel pump as they still had half a tank of pixie fuel left. That car is magical on fuel consumption and beats me how it can run so long on a tank of fuel. Kind of sorry it ended that way as it was a great battle to almost the end. skierman64
I had a great time running with #550 Junk in the Trunk racing this weekend. Thanks to Tom and Troy for letting me join them in their e30. Because it's a swapped car we started with 2 penalty laps on Saturday and 1 on Sunday. Saturday I got to drive twice, once on the south course and the closing stint on the full course. We had worked all they way up to P2 just prior to our 2nd pit stop when we discovered a failing front wheel bearing. Troy and Tom fixed it in about 20 minutes. We got back on track with me driving in P11, about halfway through my stint I started to get some engine cut out which progressively got worse to where I ended up pitting early to diagnose. After replacing the fuel pump we got back on track but now down many laps as our off track time equaled about an hour total between both repairs. I got back in for the last stint running 7pm-9pm. I had a great time and I don't recall getting passed at all in 2 hours on the full course. The last 15 minutes I had to use the Helen Keller driving technique as our car only had 2 OE low beam headlights without even a high beam which was equivelent of driving with a 1970s $1.95 flashlight with nearly dead batteries taped to the hood. Video to follow. Sunday I drove last again. It took me a few laps to get used to the different tires we were running on Sunday as they had a LOT less grip. Sorry for the tire generated smokescreen to anyone follow me in the braking zones. We were solidly in P4 my whole stint. With 20 minutes remaining I called in and started slowing slightly to save the car for the end. With ~7 laps remaining unbeknownst to me the leader Spartan racing broke on pit road where I couldn't see him. Within a few laps of that, the new leader Premium dudes passed me which ended up being a critical pass for us. If I'd known to stay in front of them we would have gotten the extra lap we needed to get on the podium, but instead we just got to go to impound in P4. It took me a while to adjust to the lack of braking power on a stock braked e30. My usual MO is to pass in the braking zones, which caught me out a couple of times throughout the weekend without the braking power I'm used to. My apologies to BAR for one hairy moment. I didn't find Autobahn to be overly rough, the pavement was wavy but they were large oscillations that were rough on the driver but didn't seem to beat up the car. There was only one bump that caused the car to "thump" and that was on the north course just prior to the 2nd to last turn. Stay off the exit curbing to preserve the car. I was happy to see that Tyler was feeling the effects of the weekend on his body as well, if he was feeling it, then I don't feel as bad for not being in shape and feeling as if I'd gone a few rounds with Mike Tyson. I really enjoyed the full couse. It's the same length and way more challenging than Road America. I really enjoyed the turns (13, 14, 15) N2, N3, N4 on the full course, the medium speed sweepers were fun especially after coming off "the jump" straight. I'll be back to drive full course again. BollingerChump
New Chump here. Figured I'd wait till I got to actually drive a few stints under full power until I posted on one of the threads. Have tried the last couple years to run in Clancy Shmidt's Frite only to suffer fueling (then fire) issues at gingerman and a blown clutch with no spare available at road america in the first hour of the race. Only been to a few of these events but have to say the on track workers, Chump staff running the event, and all the volunteers were top notch. Hats off to all of them.. This was the first event for the vw gti as many could probably tell by its nearly flawless exterior. Being the first event, no "creature comforts" were in the car and after just an hour in the car the heat was getting to us so settled for one hour stints for both car and driver preservation. Had to change front brake pads midway thru saturday and then at about 9 hours in the growling in the right handers got loud enough we pulled off to find the left front wheel had an inch or two of play back and forth. I'll guess what you witnessed was diagnosis of said wheel bearing @Racer28173. being new to the car we didn't have a spare spindle assembly ready so the team had to use mini sledges in place of an arbor press to get the old bearing out and new bearing in. For the time I was on track I thought the south course was very fun. Challenging and busy, definitely a driver skill course. Never got to run the full layout but didn't hear anything bad from the other drivers about that layout. The line I took wasn't very bumpy, almost wavy as mentioned before, but those kerbs were a different story if you hit them wrong.. Sunday north course was again a fun challenging course. Made for a nice challenge to get into a rhythym and especially liked the 3-4-5 esses, you could make or break your lap time thru there and onto the back straight depending on the line you took. Car ran well all day and we managed to finish tenth overall even having 5+ pitstops. Hope the driver of the miata that caused the FCY is ok..was behind me and went into the grass going into T6 after the back straight and locked up and went off into the grass. next time thru i saw the car spinning off the track towards the tires in my mirrors. Some friends and family who were there watching said driver went to the ambulance when they got back to paddock. Haven't heard anything but given the heat I hope they are ok. Having been my first Chump stints under full power throughout and first ever event finish I can now say I'm fully addicted. Great driving by everyone out there while I was in the car, good hard racing but always clean and always room given for the other cars. Also fantastic communication on track between drivers. Thanks to all who made for a fun weekend, can't wait for Gingerman!
hotrod
I am a new "Blue Shell" with the 38 car. Went to a race last season with these guys and had a great time. So I decided to build a car & join them. I'm a Ford guy so we chose the 2002 Ford Focus SVT. The Blue Shells also have a Honda, Nissan, Neon & a Toyota MR2. Bought SVT from a Wisconsin dealer that bought it at an auction then realized it had a lot of issues to make it a good road car, but it was a perfect race car for us so we bought it cheap. I love building cars and had a great time putting this car together. Everything just fell into place nicely on Saturday John Welch called a perfect race & Dennis Neel, Ron Snow, Nate Cove & myself had a penalty free day, also without a cool suit system so hats off to the guys! And the pit stops went great. I really enjoyed the comments about the car and the many things we did to the driver compartment. We replaced several components such as hubs, bearings, drive shafts, water pump, idlers, alt ect. mostly the serviceable parts. The only non oem part is a urethane trans mount! Had a great time, smiling all the way, racing with everyone. There's only one guy that made his car a little wide when I came up on him . As to the bumps the only ones that come to mind were on the north track coming on to the pit straight. We'll be at Gingerman in August hope to see you all there. Racer28173
OK - so I'm doing the ill-advised and posting a video before I've looked at it. I know there is a spin in it and at least two other moments that aren't top shelf, but it is what it is. This is the first stint of Saturday in the JSK Nissan Maxima (#176). I didn't have a functional radio (couldn't hear the pits) so I spent the whole stint trying to catch the cream Acura (Clueless Racing) that took off like a scalded cat at the beginning. Little did I know that it got black flagged and wasn't just up the track anymore, so I wasn't going to catch it even with really fast laps.... So we were in the lead and I didn't know it. Almost every car in the race is featured in this video somewhere (except perhaps the top 6 cars). The early laps I was trying to make sure I let the tires get temperature in them. But then I decided I was letting the Acura get too big of a lead and so I took off after him...

FWD guys don't seem to bother with it, since it doesn't upset the balance of the car like it does with RWD. I haven't seen clutch issues in any of the FWD cars I've rented in (4 different cars total) and none of the guys seemed to heel/toe (although I did it in two of them because the pedals were close enough to allow it). I think if you have a decent clutch and you don't ride the release you do OK with it not overheating...
