Newb VIR 24 questions

Recommended Posts

It appears in the sups that VIR only allows contained, RV camping no tent camping.  The VIR website indicates that tent camping is allowed. Can anybody clarify?

Would 144 gallons be a accurate estimate of fuel used for a Bmw e30?

Here are my thoughts so far on needs:

Checklist for car prep needed to be completed prior to the race

Checklist for the car prior to start of the race

Checklist for parts and tools needed

Parts: coolant hoses, fuel hoses, any spare brake parts you can find, belts, 2 sets of tires/wheels,

Plan out meals prior to the race

Develop a race strategy, that can be changed if needed

Anything that you would add to the checklist that wouldn't normally be on a 8+7 race weekend?

Do you know your fuel burn? You're going to have 12 stops at 5 mins, so you're going to be racing for 23 hours approx.

I would recommend putting on new wheel bearings front and rear, new rotors, and have 3 sets of tires ready.

Tent camping is allowed, but it is so hot that it is pretty miserable, it is important to have a place that drivers can rest in an air conditioned space. We have always brought a big 5th wheel trailer with an air conditioner, and this year I reserved a pit row room. Since it looks like we won’t be racing this year I will release the room soon.

For food if you can get one of the non-driving team members or a wife-girlfriend to handle it that is awesome, it is way too easy to get tied up in the racing and bonk then figure out that you haven’t eaten for 12 hours. VIR in August it will be impossible to drink too much water, figure at least a case of bottled water per team member.

-       Tent Camping is allowed. Best suited renting an RV. It is HOT and your drivers need to be able to cool donw.

-       Sounds about right. We don’t run an E30, but that’s about good. I’d get some 55 gallon drums off CL and fill them up OFFSITE prior. They’re about $25/ea on CL and you get two and fill the empty as needed.

Here are my thoughts so far on needs:

Checklist for car prep needed to be completed prior to the race

-       Given. Nut and bolt the car, fluids, make sure all safety gear is up to date. Make sure everyone has their safety gear.

Checklist for the car prior to start of the race

-       Yup.

Checklist for parts and tools needed

-       Yup.

Parts: coolant hoses, fuel hoses, any spare brake parts you can find, belts, 2 sets of tires/wheels,

-       Yup. You could probably get away with 2 sets; depending on how aggressive you’re driving . 3 would be a safe bet.

Plan out meals prior to the race

-       Yup. We usually hit up the squiggly wiggly (or whatever it is) out in Danville and fill up some coolers depending on peoples taste.

Develop a race strategy, that can be changed if needed

-       Step 1: Steal underpants.

Make sure you develop a list and print it out for every member of the team.  Make sure it includes free time, drive time, in the pit time and sleep time.

Stick to this schedule even if the strategy changes. Due to being an even hour race, you should still try to stick to stops every 2 hours even if you do an extra stop.

We only took 8 new scrubbed tires.  We rotated front to back at about the 18 hour mark.  The other 4 tires went untouched.  Good tires are a must as is proper pressures.

We never had to change pads or brakes, but we practiced changing them hot to make sure we could do it quickly.

Hydrate!

Try to get one of the garage villas.  Close enough to the pits to walk.  Bring earplugs for sleeping.

This race will destroy all of you.

Keep it on the pavement and touch nothing.  Keep the pitstops to the 11 minimum and 5 min max.  You have a great shot at being on the podium if you do that.

Tire wear at VIR is pretty low, most cars should be able to  make the whole 24hr on a single set. Last year when we were the first cars to race on the brand new surface the tires came out of the race looking barely scuffed in.
