Snorman
Would the trunk of a 4-door be considered the "passenger compartment" if there is no bulkhead between the trunk and the rear seat/passenger compartment area and would we therefore need a battery box? The rule: 3.13.3. All batteries located in the driver’s compartment of the car shall be enclosed in a plastic or steel box. I believe that we do when the battery is located in the right rear area of the trunk. I've heard that there may be an exception for an AGM, but there is nothing in the rules that states that. S. Eman911
No bulkhead = passenger compartment in my interpretation. Besides who want to be splashed with acid?
reidry
Eman911 is right on. It what I expect and is the exact clarification we received during our last build from chump tech. Ryan
Snorman
It's interesting. We have a car that we've gotten from one of the other Chump regions that not only ran Chump, but WRL. It passed tech at both and I think still has a Chump tech sticker on the main hoop. But it's got an Optima red top in the trunk with no rear bulkhead and a battery hold-down. I guess sometimes things just slip through. S. Edited June 19, 2017 by Snorman
TBone
WRL may not require a battery box for an Optima. CCWS didn't until last year, or maybe the year before.
Mopar 63
All batteries that are in the drivers compartment that is not physically seperated by a bulkhead shall be in a battery box. Its for safety reasons. Should your voltage regulator fail your charging your battery at whatever rate your alternator puts out. Yes even so called sealed batteries of any kind will explode if charged at a fast rate (battery mfg. will tell you to never charge at more than 10 amps) . I've personally seen two sealed batteries explode. It will destroy a drivers suit and makes a heck of a mess. If in doubt its worth the few dollars for a battery box. Snorman
Thank you very much, Phil. We just wanted to clarify and agree 100%. S.
Administrators E. Tyler Pedersen Posted June 19, 2017 Administrators Report Share Posted June 19, 2017 I was about to say why wouldn't you put a battery box in no matter what the rules say. You know for your own safety

Chump went with the box last year, found that out during teach at VIR... FWIW a cheapo plastic box will pass tech. And not sure any would/should pass w/o a hold down, that is crazy.
