West Coast wish list

Pee Wee

Recommended Posts

I'll start a wish list.

Jan/Feb Buttonwillow 24 with options for a double 7 for less enthusiastic teams.

Mar Spring Mountain(Parump Nv)

April Thunder-hill 5 mile

May Vegas Roval preferred but will settle for outer road course.

June Sonoma

July Laguna Seca

Aug-Sept Hibernate in air conditioning.

Oct Vegas outer course double 8 parc ferme

Not saying I would go to all of those because in my opinion 4 or 5 races is plenty for me.

Anyone else?

Pahrump is not vegas as I see it, been in the town a few times for off road races and it's a cool place. The track looks like a sweet place.

Im thinking the PNW has been given up to another series.

Chuckwalla ok because I drive by it all the time heading to Parker so I'm curious, just be smart on the date.

That is a quality list but drop two of the three Vegas races, put in one at The Ridge and one at Chuckwalla.

TA ran The Ridge iirc.

Saw a vid of a PNW race anyway and it kicked ass.

Dangerous? Yes. But awesome racing.

Nobody will be able to get a race in at Spring Mountain. Chevy has them booked up with owner school classes and their Level 1,2,3 schools and radical events.

And as far as the PNW events, race in 3 weeks has 75 plus signed up. So much for a dead region.

This is pacific.  I think every corner has eaten a car or two even the "front straight" is a car eater.

This is The Ridge.

I love both tracks.  I don't think Pacific is dangerous, just not as forgiving.

I've done Laguna Seca and the Ridge.  I prefer the Ridge.  Best kept secret in the Northwest.

ORP in Grass Valley, OR is awesome too, but remote without hotels and support makes for a long weekend.

Best part of ORP is it is set up to run both directions.  Amazing experience to run a brand new track on Sunday.

Yup, No way to get numbers here because we all live out in the middle of no where and the population and interest in motorsport isn't as strong as in the East.

Sure glad my wife let me put up that second TeePee to work on the car in.

I'm thinking you are confused with Pacific Raceway (formerly known as Seattle International Raceway).  Driving there is kind of like riding a motorcycle.  It's not a matter of IF you will wreck, its a matter of how bad the wreck will be when it happens. I wouldn't call it unsafe, It is just very unforgiving of even the slightest mistake. 2 hours is a very long time to go without making a mistake.

I volunteered at a Chump race back at the beginning of the end for the NW.  They had some 19 cars register and by the end of Sunday, 5 had to be loaded on the trailer with a shovel.  Granted, there was rain, but there's always rain everywhere.

The Ridge only really has 1 place where cars get bent.  That is right as you start the front straight.  Other than that, there is tons of run off everywhere and has some very fast and fun turns and hills.

I agree, I would do The Ridge over Laguna.

Just my opinion as a lazy Team Captain who has to "heard cats" (drivers) and stand around while the have fun and dent my car.

  • One concern about Nevada races-will S.F. Bay area cars attend races in Southern Nevada? The more "crossover" events that can draw from north and south, the better for getting our participation numbers up.  I would like S.F. feedback about traveling to Nevada.
  • I know VARA has run at Spring Mountain, so maybe there are some dates available?
  • VARA and SCCA run Buttonwillow both directions, so that is an option

January-Hibernate next to fire

February-Sonoma (only likely available date)

Late March/Early April-Buttonwillow or Willow Srings

May-Thunderhill Original Layout (never done that one)

June-Willow Springs or Las Vegas Outside

July-Laguna

August September-Hibernate next to pool or ocean or PeeWee's beer fridge

October-Willow Springs or Buttonwillow

Late November/Early December-Chumpionship-??  Feedback please!

(Needs to be somewhere geographically that SoCal, NorCal, and maybe some returning Northwest teams can run. You could "reserve" a number of slots at Laguna for Western Region, hold it at Buttonwillow, or even Las Vegas Outside if teams will travel)

They have 75 -- but how many of those are running under CC rules? LDRL "outsources" their tech rules; if you can show your car is legal in one or another of a list of "approved" series, they'll let you run, and put you in a class appropriate to your lap times. So while there's 75 or so cars, how many of them are, say, PRO-3, or PRO-7, or one of the lower [x]P classes, or even Vintage (I seem to recall someone brought a SVRA Mini to one of those events)?

And to be strictly fair: If quite so many cars are being run to those rulesets, and aren't going completely off-the-rails (in the figurative, or literal, senses -- I understand LDRL is *Death* on contact), well....

This may warrant investigation. [breaks out Groucho glasses, and slinks away furtively]

Out of 75?  Probably half the field would be Chump-Spec classes A-D while nearly the other half would probably be Chump-Spec EC... so like pretty much all of them would be within ChumpCar rules.

This is not true! LDRL has its own tech rules that all cars must meet.  The rules were made to allow cars from many series.  Very few teams are not chump or lemons types.  That mini team may have done a svra race but they said they came from lemons.

This is also not true! They are no more strict than lemons (in my exp)  and the change from chumps do nothing (past admin) is welcome.

Poor phrasing on my part -- while they do have tech rules, it's explicitly stated in a couple places "if you're in compliance with [other series], you're probably in compliance here". (Let's face it: Most series' safety rules are interchangeable these days.) And the tech sheet is fairly basic -- a question, followed by tick-boxes for "Yes", "No", and "N/A"; no measurements required (they may be on to something here...).

As to "death on contact": AIUI, anyone involved in contact there gets black-flagged; the only question is how hard one gets one's backside slapped for being involved. The events of theirs I've see first-hand (keeping a *very* low profile... ;) ), were very much not-contact-y. And given who the series is run by, I rather suspect the point gets hammered home *quite* thoroughly early on. :)

Spokane ---- 24 hours! AGAIN!

Pacific Raceways ----- even though it killed our Mustang last year.

The Ridge ------ 'cause it's awesome.

ORP ---- 24 hours PLEASE!!!!

Portland ---- we'd go back there after the couple of year break if you can get a weekend without torrential rainfall.

Yes; I know it rains here A LOT, and I don't so much not like driving the car in the rain but hanging in the pits and trying to watch a race in the rain gets miserable quick for me and good luck bringing family, visitors/spectators or potential new racers to pay to watch.

You want a good car count and to grow participation, choose the dates with some of that stuff in mind.

We skipped this year because we are building a new car, and hope to full participate in next years schedule here in the Northwest.

PS: I went to the  SOVREN pacific northwest historics races this weekend at Pacific Raceways and their car corral had many clubs represented. Why no Chump presence???

I talked to a couple of kids ( 20-somethings) volunteering there who were interested in getting into some racing, and tried to explain ChumpCar to them....they had never             heard of us but sounded interested. Knew about Lemons. Would be nice to have a one page printable official ChumpCar "sales brochure" to hand out. We've even put our             old Pinto chump car in  the company car show. Would have been nice to have those "sales brochures" to hand out there to generate interest.

Therein lies the problem -- there's only two months out of the year where one can be reasonably certain of No Rain; have you noticed how all three of PIR's Big Events this year are clustered in this month? And the next month is "dead of summer in a swamp"....

No *official* presence, anyway -- at the PIR Historics, I'm usually camped at the Festival Curves.... :)

The notion of a one-sheet advertising the series is interesting; someone with better ad-design skills than myself would have to do it. There's the small problem of differentiating ourselves from LDRL -- what does CC offer that they don't?

That's the elephant in the room. Once CC left the region, getting it back will be tough. Even tougher when everybody is happy racing LDRL, with LDRL rules. Why should they come back to CC?

As much as I would like to race Spokane as it is only 7.5 hours away, I would not suggest ChumpCar trying to set up a race there.  I think the last race with decent entries was the 36, after that were only cancelations and the one 12/24 hour a couple of years ago by Lucky Dog which only drew 12 entries of which we were one of them.

I'm not sure why, it is not a bad track, some rocks off course - better than trees off course.  Just keep it on the track.
