Pictures of light setups and product reviews / recommendations

Recommended Posts

I've been looking through older post trying to find pictures of light setups that people have run and are happy with to see where they're mounting them and how happy or happy they are with their setup and what they might do different next time.

Also, any recommendations on LED lights bought would be appreciated.

Removable light bar on top of hood.  Remove it during the day and it never gets broken.  Pin it on and plug it in 1 stop before dark.

We use a trailer towing plug for the power, receptacle is mounted through the hood with the harness routed up from the back.  Chose 4 Rigid Industries lights, buy once, cry once.  Four fixtures means you could loose two of them and still have the mandatory two forward lights to continue.  two of ours point roughly forward and two point out for cornering.

This might be a dumb question, but does anyone use a cheap set of lights for day/rain driving?

We have yet to do any night racing, and not sure if we will be doing any in the near future.  When racing in the rain it would be pretty nice to have a bit of extra visibility in the mirrors of other cars.  How much would a typical light setup weigh?  Would something cheap be sufficient for that purpose?

I think something like this is the only thing that is safe. Make sure you mount it as high as possible, if you can build a big box to mount it higher it will be even safer.

Just do what all the morons around here do and throw on the flashers.  (I know that doesn't solve the forward light issue, I just hate those people)

We always run at least one of our night racing lights, regardless of day/night or weather.

Pfft you are mistaking me for my rookie drivers. I was just saying, you need to make your car look like the pace car if you are acting like it hahaha.

Seriously though, I'm going to get a pair of these to run on the front in the gap between hood and bumper:

Some form of light on the car that you can turn on at a moments notice is a good idea.  We have blue LEDs up the edges of the windshield, over the roofline, down the rear window and across the rear bumper.  In the event that we get rain or cloudy conditions the driver turns on the lights to add a little bit of "I'm right here" to our car.  These lights also make it easy for the pit to identify our car when it's coming down pit lane in the dark.

On another light safety note, the rules specify a minimum of 2 brake lights and a maximum of 4.  We use two stock bulb brake lights and a red LED strip across the top rear edge of our trunk lid, powered by a separate fuse.  Really important at night that cars behind you know you are braking and this setup makes it very unlikely that we'd loose all brake lights at once.

Whatever you do, don't do this.

If I was racing against that car I'd have it pulled from the field until they fixed their lights.

Notice how it's illuminating HIGH ON THE WALL?  This is a violation of the rules and a hazard to everyone in front of them.

There is not a single LED lightbar available that meets the rules yet somehow they are allowed to run.

Go get ebay HID projectors with real a real cutoff.  They a friggin' bright and don't blind everyone else on the track.

That's what we did.  Two LHD pattern, two RHD pattern, setup to be a little higher on the outside like this ---\___/---  It doesn't blind anyone and we see everything.

In that image it looks like they are doing adjustments.

That is one of the reasons we went with multiple fixtures, here is an image when we were doing alignment.  Note that even with the forward lights pointed at the ground about a car length and one half in front of our car their is sufficient light to illuminate the stop sign 300 feet away.

This was not out final alignment.
