The Brainerd Challenge 2017 Donnybrook and Comp Course special!

Recommended Posts

So...Nobody posted a just got home thread for this one?  Ok, I'll start...with the start!

Yeah baby yeah, That's all I've got to say.  That me in the car Sunday morning for the start.  Who else has video?  What else can people tell me about the race?  We had 2 good days and very little mechanical problems which is awesome.

I heard some people crashed hard.  That sucks, What happened?  I know what that's like.

Tough weekend for VW's. We had the red and white car along with the Blue and orange car. Saturday the blue and orange car was running on 5 of its 6 cylinders, until we decided a fuel injector wire was loose and just needed to be plugged in... Ran great after that. Sunday started good, driver error sent the car into the wall exiting turn 3.

As for the Red and White car, we were PUNTED by a no good BMW into the wall. By a driver who apparently just wasn't paying attention.  Car is toast!! No black flag or penalty was given to them, to my knowledge.

Other than that had a great time and met some really nice people at the track. Had some really fun racing against the scirocco Sunday morning!!!

Had the opportunity to run with the CYR team last weekend.  I'll let Tyler add a full write up if he chooses, but from my perspective it was a frustrating, but fun weekend.  I had the fortune to start the race on Saturday and had a good first hour in the car until our first issue reared its head.  I apologize to the Fart Hinder Saab that I passed going through the high speed, I was trying not to drift into you and didn't have my eyes up to see the yellow flag waving at the turn 3 entrance, first black flag in 6 years of racing.

After spending ~2hrs working on the car, it ran a full stint and part of another before more issues came up and we spent the rest of the race getting it ready for Sunday.  Since we were the second pit stall, we had some really good views of the turn 12 excitement that seems to be at every Brainerd race.  The fact that the track didn't have the brake markers up might have made it an issue for some that weren't familiar with the track, but that corner always seems to cause issues with cars locking up brakes and sliding off or into other cars which one for sure was driver error and I was told the other was due to a stuck throttle cable.

Sunday I was able to go out and run the last two hours of the race, but due to another issue with the car, it was really down on power and wouldn't go passed 5k rpm on the high speed sections which killed my lap times.  Did have a fun time in the last 20 minutes running with the Motorcrap Mustang who only had 4th gear.

Saw a lot of good, courteous driving while I was out there.  The only scary parts were going through turn 2 and having a car decide to break in front of you instead of stay throttle down.  Thanks for a great weekend!

Drivers put on a good show for the weekend.  Was my first opportunity to be a corner worker at one of your events.  Lots of on track action , all day, both days.  Have worked a 3 hour endurance session before, but that did not compare in any way.

I was at Turn 4 sunday, saw the VW's both get into the wall exiting 3.  Was hard to tell from my perspective if #40 had help, I looked that way and car was just getting sideways, but that was a pretty serious impact.  Shame, that car looked to really be moving out there.  Did see the blue and orange one exit 3 and shoot cross track. Thinking that the 2 cars must have met wall within feet of each other.

Had a few other memorable moments.  The red Camaro with a 175-yard drift thru 4 and almost into 5, right in front of #81.  Pucker moment for me, can only imagine riding that one out.  That Camaro and the Mustang had several laps of tight racing mid-afternoon.  Watching the #90 3-wheel thru the corner was kinda neat.  Saw that 90 have an off-track between 2 and 3 on Saturday, that looked like wild ride.  Thankfully I was not an incident-magnet for the weekend.  We had some staff that had to work much harder than I did.

Anyway, enjoyed the action you all provided.

Good stuff.

I'm a little surprised.  I didn't see much action in either of my stints.  Last Saturday and First Sunday.  Saw a few cars parked on the sides for various reasons but none of the offensive action happened in front of me.  One car put on a drift in front of me in corner 4 once on Saturday and that was about the entire extent of what I saw.

I think a purple car nearly got into the side of me in the Turn 12 in front of the pits on Saturday but I spotted him last opportunity and was fortunate enough to be able to give enough room to avoid any contact.  That was the extent of what I saw or was involved in this last weekend.

Anyone else processing video?

Well, Motorcrap had a rough weekend, thats forsure.  After many races without a hitch, we finally got ours.  New motor in the car for this race, and it was giving us overheating, or just over pressurized problems all weekend.  The temp gauge was reading all over the place but at first seemed to go to 250* and stick around there.  It was pushing water into the overflow at a very high rate, on a 19psi cap.  Something obviously wasnt right.  Saturday we pulled the car in, and as a team, we swapped head gaskets (in about 3 hours...after letting the car cool slightly and waiting for intake gaskets to arrive from a team family member).

The problem persisted tho, although it seemed to improve slightly.  We tried a few other minor tweaks, but no one was able to stay on track for more than a few laps until water was spraying out the overflow (and once blew the lower radiator hose)

Saturday evening we decided the water pump maybe at fault.  We swapped that, and drove around the paddock area for awhile and the car seems to keep cool.  We had high hopes going into Sunday.

Sunday...the overheating/over pressure seemed to be fixed for awhile, but late into our first drivers stint, the problem came back.  Brought the car in, and put about 3 gallons of water in it.  Using a temp gun, and checking where the sensor reads, was around 180/200* but the gauge was reading well over 250*.  We suspect the gauge is not working correctly, cause there are no other signs of overheating, other then the water being pushed into the overflow.  Every time we check the radiator temp and near the sensor with the temp gun, we where getting much lower readings than the gauge indicated.  We put put another driver in, and they where able to stay out for an entire stint without any temp problems, although the clutch felt like it was starting to go.  Next driver in, and during that stint, we lost 5th gear.  Great...5th gear on a track with the longest straight in the Country.  So we would run the straight at 5k in 4th.  Next driver in, and we lost the throw out bearing.  Pulled the car in, dropped the trans and replaced the part in just under 2 hours, but still no 5th.

That driver went back out, and for awhile was fine, but had the overheating problem again.  We decided if we kept the car in 4th, we didnt get the overheating problem.  If we went down to 3rd into 3, and thru the slower bits, than we'd be pissing water in a few laps.  So I got into the car with about 1:10 left in the race.  Kept it in 4th my entire stint and did my best at putting in good, clean, fast laps with what I had.  Had some fun racing with the Red Camaro early in the stint, and then with CYR for a bit.  Until I began to be concerned about fuel endurance....so I decided to slow down a bit.....with about 7 min left, the car hiccupped in turn 3, and i dropped into super fuel saver mode to remain on track until the checker.

All in all, a rough, but still fun weekend.  Still had a great time, and still had a really good stint with some fun racing.  Wish we couldve been out there more, but it happens.

We had a pretty great weekend.  Besides someone deciding our drivers door was a bit too "dent free", everything went pretty smooth.

We tried out the Maxxis tires and I for one am not impressed.  We heat cycled them a few weeks before the race, and still we chunked up, and balded all of them and had to switch to spares by Sunday morning.  We ran star specs at Road America for 2 days no problem.  This would be acceptable if the grip was phenomenal, but it wasn't.  The contingency is appealing, but not worth it if we have to bring 10 tires to every event.

Also ended up using all our front brake pads (Carbotech XP8s) by midday Sunday. Trying the RP2s next unless someone has another suggestion.  The XP8s had plenty of torque/feel, they just don't seem to last for us.  I'd really like to get 2 days out of a set of pads, or at least a full day out of something cheaper,

Sounds like we may be headed back to RA in October.  Se y'all there

Did you do a proper bed-in on those pads before the race (followed their instructions or buy pre-bedded pads?)   Carbotech's are a great pad, but they HAVE to be bedded in properly to have any chance of lasting.   That being said, this past weekend was first experience on PFCs.  Call me impressed.  Minimal wear, decent modulation and release, more brake torque than tire grip.

Brainerd is tough on tires.  Heavy loads through turns 1/2, carousel and the staging area pavement is like a cheese grater.  We toasted the left side on our car and had heavy wear on right side.  ZII star-specs, brand new for the weekend - swapped tires front to back after 1st day.

Seems you were not the only one with a driver door dent - the Honda had a huge depression there as well by end of the weekend.  Saw a few other cars that picked up damage (and saw a chunk of that happen in turn 12 on 1st day, since it was right by our pit).

We found on the E36, we would go through them (RP2) in a race or so.

We switched to the PFC 08's and got multiple races. Wouldn't run anything else on the BWM.

If you can get PFC 08's, I would.

On the FWD, we were running RP2 and they were ok - lasted around 2 races.

At the recommendation from Mark at Frozen Rotors, we switched over to RS43 pads for the FWD and I like them much better than the RP2.

They last 3-4 races (of course that depends on the track...)

My opinion - PFC 08 if you can get them, then either the RS43 if you can get those or the RP2. I think any of the above 3 would be ok and far better than the XP08, 10 or 12.

The Fart-hinder Saab started great, running in 2nd overall for awhile (since we got the green flag among the first pack of five cars). After our 2nd driver came in we noticed there was a severe lack of water in the overflow. Added nearly a gallon of water and sent driver #3 out for his stint. It lasted less than an hour and he came in with overheating. The diagnosis was blown head gasket. We were able to locate a head gasket set through the Minnesota Saab Club and even got it delivered! Car was running again by 9 PM, but didn't sound quite right.

Day 2 we only got 2 laps before the car stalled on track. We spent several hours tracking down potential problems, eventually deciding that the fuel was not getting from the pump to the engine. The fuel filter -- replaced last year and with less than 5000 miles since then -- was completely blocked. Not sure why. Bad gas? Not likely as it was the same 93 octane everyone else was buying at Nitro Square. Sabotage? Possible, but not likely. Crap in one of our gas cans? Who knows.

Anyway the theory is the car ran lean causing it to run hot, which in turn caused the water in the cooling system to puke.

Got the car running and it still didn't sound right. Blew the engine before turn 3. Part of a connecting rod is sticking out of the block below the turbo.

Trying to decide now if we will continue racing the Saab. It has been a great car and was amazingly reliable last season. That engine had over 10,000 race miles on it, box stock as it came from the Saab factory in Sweden. Mike and I are both in our 60s and it isn't easy for us to get under a car, or even to get back to a standing position without difficulty. We have a parts car with a good engine (142K mi), and a rebuildable engine (220K miles) on an engine stand. The problem is time. Too many other projects in the way.

We plan to be at Road America in October, but may not be bringing a car.

They were bedded at proving grounds a few weeks earlier.  I ordered a set of RP2s and paid for bedding.

As for tires, we ran star specs at RA, and if they didn't all have nasty flat spots from some bad driving, they'd be good for another 8 hours at least.  The Maxxis looked worse after Saturday than the Dunlops did after 2 days.  They were chunking, and they burned through their shoulders in and out even though we ran more pressure than we would have with the Dunlops.  We may try them again, but not in this size (205).  I'm sure the Donnybrook course and the heat had something to do with it, but I still feel the Dunlops or BFGs would have done better.  As we get more comfortable with the car, we may be pushing them harder as well.  Time to go wider I guess.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I'll repost this here as it was also in the "pre-event" forums. I've mailed out USB sticks (and even a Micro SD card) full of photos to five teams already. If any team that ordered photos and has receved them wants to speak up, please do so.......

Seems the forums here don't like big photo files. I posted a shot of each car to my Facebook page and then and made the gallery public.
It is here: ---------> https://www.facebook.com/comicozzie/media_set?set=a.10210244902503651.1073741885.1372954960&type=3&pnref=story

I'll just say that there is another photography company that shoots ChumpCar events in the southeastern states and asks $70 for pre-orders of everything from the weekend. Normally, if I shoot an event, I ask $100 for everything, but I will match the $70 from the competition this one time - even AFTER the event happened. Images will be put onto an USB drive and mailed out. Otherwise a single digital image from the weekend is still $20 and will be e-mailed. Any questions, send me an e-mail to comicozzie@juno.com, otherwise I'll check back on these forums every couple of days.

In case you would like to see photos of your car before payment, or before I start editing in post-production too see what I have, I have made sub-galleries here: http://www.comicozzie.com/gallery2/v/2017/Chump/ . Click on the thumbnail photos to go into the sub-sub-galleries or to enlarge the images. Again, with the photos that I posted to that link, these are fresh out of the camera - no editing.

P.S.
Also, the guy who owns the Maserati Biturbo #185 seemed interested in photos prior to Sunday morning's race and asked how long I'd be at the track. I left around 12:30 and forgot to stop back in the pit area before heading home with my kids. Anyone know if he's on these forums? TIA.

Tim, You and your team are welcome to race with us.  Don't know how to translate Fart Hinder into Italian though......

We are considering a second BiTurbo for next year now that we have figured this thing out....
