hemi_fan
Hi, My team is new to Chumpcar racing and are getting close to being ready for our first event. We have no idea how many consumables to bring. What should we expect to go through in terms of brakes and tires for a 15-hour event?

We use brake pads that last 30 hours and cost $265 per axle. Duralast pads will save you money but you will be out of brakes in 4 hours or less. RWD OR FWD? FWD will chew up front tires on many cars. Too much sliding in a RWD car will chew up rears. How hamfisted are your drivers? Flat spot a tire and it might be trash in the first ten minutes of the event. We try to run the weekend on what we have on the car with spares for the unexpected.
Ron_e
We usually come with a new set of tires on the car and a used set in case of a flat or flat spot. Brakes should also go the weekend but we also have a spare set on hand. Other spares are usually specific to how reliable they are on your specific type of vehicle.
TBone
First event? At a minimum, I'd bring at least 6 tires, 8 if you can. An extra set of brake pads. And fluids.
turbogrill
Other consumables to think about is stuff like radiator, alternator, wheel bearings, transmission

If you have a good pad like Hawk Blue, I would have one new set on the car and a 2nd set on hand. If you are running a good tire like Dunlop Direzza Star Spec, I would have a minimum of 6 tires and maybe 8 just to be safe.

Jer
In our Miata the trans was practically a wear item. We replaced it every year it seemed. But standard consumables are race gas, tow gas, brake pads, oil, and tires. That's it.

We weren't fully engaging the clutch ever, and that created premature grind. We adjusted the pedal and now it's been four races without issue. Food for thought, something to check.

I assumed it was your granny shifting and not double clutching like you should that was the factor leading to premature wear. Dewey Havta
Our first race I cleaned out the garage. Found out that my 3000is Honda generator will run my Miller 110v welder. Also found that angle iron from the farm store can make a perfectly serviceable engine mount. Funny thing is I went full overkill but I used everything I brought. One vehicle to tow the car-tires-fuel jugs and one pulling a trailer with all the parts. Make friends with anyone and everyone that has a similar car. It will pay dividends in the future.

Last year at Sebring I was driving the KSR chop top Z. The driver in the stint before me, tried coming under a car in T16 that didn't see him. He got pushed over the inside curbing and the oil filter got damaged. The car dropped oil down the entire back straight. And unbelievable, KSR couldn't find the extra oil filter they had in the trailer. And my team (EI Racing) that also runs a 300Z couldn't find our spare filter. So the car sat on jack stands in the hot pit for 15 minutes while we ran around sourcing a filter. It's those dumb little things that can kill you. S. If I push hard, I can melt through a set of star specs in 4 hours.
hemi_fan
Thanks for all of the replies. We'll be scrambling to get the car ready, but very excited to go run our first event. The car is a 1997 VW Passat VR6 (FWD). It's basically bone stock, just stripped down. Hopefully it will at least last the first day
