theblue
I checked the sups, but do you need headlights for Thompson? and just to give this a little more meat, anything I should know about Thompson as a track for a first timer? Ronh911
It will be dark by race end. Watch out for the rubber marbles coming out of the "oval". Ron
Gearhead_42
Sunset about 7:20, full dark just before 9. I think I'm going to try to get lights installed before the race even if not required by rule.
ChampCar Staff DuncanDana Posted July 31, 2017 ChampCar Staff Report Share Posted July 31, 2017 So the Mighty and All-Knowing Google declares that sunset on race-day is 7:19pm. I'm not going to beat you guys up over lighting, but that's about an hour of low light, and a half hour of "getting dark." It might not hurt you to have some lighting available. The track isn't fully lighted like Daytona, but there is enough lighting so it won't be a problem either way. Dana

Dana At Autobahn earlier this year we ran until 9:00pm, official sunset at 8:22 iirc, and it was quite dark by the end. We were using a decent light bar setup and I still ran off track on the final lap (due to losing sight at the exit of a sweeping turn). It would not have been safe to run after about 8:20 8:30 without headlights. Edited July 31, 2017 by enginerd
Ronh911
I would recommend lights, unless your faster than me, then you don't need them.
Administrators Bill Strong Posted July 31, 2017 Administrators Report Share Posted July 31, 2017 also, clouds and rain can make it dark way before the sun sets.
Ron_e
Go headlights. We did the Vegas race and I think sunset was 10 minutes before race end, many cars went flying off track at the end without headlights. At dusk it is hard to see, incredibly more so at speed. djsteviec
Also, FYI for anyone going to Thompson- When the sun is going down, you will be BLINDED going into turn 1! Have visor shields or sunglasses on for that stint.
