Tablets with lap timer

I keep seeing tablets running laptimers in the videos. What is everyone using as a tablet, a power source,  mount and what App are you running? What else are you running on them as well? Can they be used for telemetry or anything like that?

I've got a $50 tablet that would be perfect but i'm also afraid it won't last. Being $50 and all.

I dont run a tablet...

I used Harrys Lap timer on a phone with good success before upgrading to AIM.

Used RAM Mount to the roll bar.

Power source - Cigarette lighter with a USB adapter.  Zip tie it into the socket.

We use a $30 amazon fire t(from prime day) that we hacked to remove adds an add google play (the store).  This was very easy to do.   We use trackaddict app and love its predictive lap analytics.  We also have wifi in our car and the app will broadcast track position and times to the web.  It has really helped me figure out what works and made me a better driver.   We use a Ram Mount also, money, but worth it.   We use a 10ghz bluetooth GPS unit, without this no phone will give data that's very good.  So looking at under $150 all in, including software.

I used Harry's on an ASUS tablet with a 10hz bluetooth GPS.  Mounted with Rammount.  We haven't had much chance to really work the bugs out so I can't really give you an effectiveness review.  What data I was able to gather was interesting, but I never got a chance to try to overlay it in video or use it for any real purpose.

Pretty much the same as others, except we changed from Harry’s to RaceChrono. The display is nice and simple and the predictive box changes from red to green if you are up on your best lap.

The biggest problem that we have had is keeping the power cable plugged in, in the end I got a really short power cable and JB welded it to the tablet.

SpeedFreq works on both phones and tablets, and if you want you can set up a local wifi network at the track and get data off the phone and onto a laptop in your hot pits everytime the car goes by.

Did I mention that it's free?

I should mention that I do have this app.  I couldn't use it at the last few races because we didn't have time/ability to map the tracks.  I'd say that is really my only complaint with SpeedFreq, it only had a few tracks mapped and most were not in our region.  I think once I get to the point of wanting to use wifi and a pit laptop I will use it instead.

Have you figured out how to get the  Aim to  pull a historical fast lap as a reference lap? Been  using my AIM at HPDEs, and every session I start with a fast lap of "0", how do I get it to pull the fast lap of that track and use it as a reference?

That is true, as we can only add tracks to the database if users upload them to the track server. There is an option within the "Races" screen for you to do this. Once you have uploaded it, then everyone can download that track to their phone and use it.

Unfortunately, not many people have been uploading tracks, hence the lack of tracks in your area.

I see you also asked on another forum.

Come to think of it, I dont recall using the reference lap functionality.  I have my dash set to PredT, not +/-, so the "reference" lap doesn't matter

We also use SpeedFreq. It's pretty easy to just set up a new track and simply touch the screen as you go by the start finish line (preferably on the warm up laps). Our phone works with gloves on too so it makes it really easy.

With what little time I've had I've been playing with all of them except harry's since I haven't seen a free version yet. Biggest issue I've run across is getting the data in the pit. I've got a cellular data on my tablet so I was hoping I could get live lap data from the car. SpeedFreg does it but you need to have a PC pitside. I'm using tablets with cell data connections both in the car and in the pit. Both need to be running hotspots so I can't use WiFi connections. I wasn't having any luck connecting my pc to my tablet using cell data with speedfreq. I'm still new to all these so I'm hoping I'm just missing something. My first race is this Friday which means I'm getting low time and may end up just running racechrono to display data to the driver. Additionally, one day when I have a ODBII connection in the car, I'd like to send as much data as possible pit side. SpeedFreq looks like the only that one does this from what I've found.

To anyone running a setup that sends data pitside, how are doing it?
