wvumtnbkr
Soooo, I have witnessed some SWEET tool boxes and pit carts at Chumpcar races. I would like to simplify my life AND I need a new toolbox. How do you guys move around these HUGE pit boxes? Right now, it takes 2 or 3 of us to move the toolbox up into the truck. I only have an open car trailer. Anybody have a way to easily get one of these mammoth tool boxes either into the track bed (6.5' bed) or onto the trailer (and not have it blow away). Any ideas are appreciated! TL;DR ... I want a big toolbox but don't know how to get it to races with my current truck and trailer.

I use castors and not pneumatic tires. I can load it myself if needed, and it probably weighs 700#.
Hi_Im_Will
This is how I do the one-man move: The black thing is a steel cage used to tie the bottom box to the floor of the trailer. It constrains the box so you don't have to crush it with ratchet straps. I can push the box into the trailer myself. The top box just sits on the floor - it's stable enough to not roll around, open, etc. Just needs to be constrained by tires or something so it doesn't slide around too much. I am thinking of some legs that I put under the toolbox, roll it over the front of the trailer (with the nose of the trailer down) and then pick the front of the trailer back up and the legs would just fall off. No lifting involved. I can build up the toolbox to have the spare race tires, etc... and not worry about picking it up. 4 minutes ago, Hi_Im_Will said: This is how I do the one-man move: How do you like those US General tool boxes? Technical Advisory Committee Andrew D Johnson Posted September 19, 2017 Technical Advisory Committee Report Share Posted September 19, 2017 I built a frame with steel square stock and some plywood, attached some castors to it, and then mounted the tool box to it. I strap it down to the trailer when driving.

They're not perfect, but a hell of a lot sturdier than Craftsman/Husky/Kobalt whatever, for about the same price. They also come with drawer liners, which is a nice touch. Only complaint so far is the locks require regular greasing, and can't hold the drawers shut on the bottom box under heavy vibration. Might have been caused by falling over in the trailer though. Old craftsman had the same problems, and then some.... For $700, you won't find anything better.

Slugworks Paul
NO way could I load your steel monstrosity onto the trailer myself. I like my stanley rolling plastic tool box. Easy to move, handy and holds almost all my track tools.

Judging by my track record of having to borrow tools from other teams, I should just leave it at home.

Thanks for lending us those wrenches and giving us some of that brake grease. My duct tape and WD40 tool kit was not good enough as usual. craig71188
I like this unit: https://www.harborfreight.com/tool-storage/tool-carts/30-in-5-drawer-glossy-red-tool-cart-69397.html Can be had on sale for about $150. I pack a few small "handheld" boxes with specialty tools for specific repairs (electrical/electronic, Engine internals, suspension) but for regular stuff (and it has the nice side shelf for chemicals and storage underneath). I am considering adding a "hang on side box": https://www.harborfreight.com/tool-storage/tool-chests-roller-cabinets/18-in-7-drawer-glossy-red-end-cabinet-for-roller-tool-chest-62580.html But am trying to pack "lighter and smarter" if I can.

We have something similar and also have a track specific set of basic/cheap tools (HF/NT mix) that stay in it. That way, if something walks off I'm not out big $$. I bring my specialty/quality tools but only use them if necessary for specific repairs. Eventually I'd like to build a war wagon using 2 of those boxes on a custom frame, maybe use electric scooter parts to motorize it. I think the issue is that even with a setup like that, it still takes 2ppl to load/unload into the truck and the OP wants something 1-person can load. Anyone try loading your tool box into the truck/trailer with some atv/motorcycle ramps?

I guess I should outline my requirements... 1) carry all of my tools 2) be able to carry 4 fuel jugs (assume full) when it "pit mode" 3) Be able to carry at least 2 spare tires / wheels in "pit mode" 4) Be able to get on my open trailer (preferably on the front of the trailer) this will be "travel mode" So, my problem statement is roughly this: I want to be able to quickly load up my tools and get the toolbox onto the trailer myself. At the track, I want to be able to unload the tools, stack the fuel cans and some spare tires and get the pit cart to the pit lane.
Hi_Im_Will
These will one-man load an easy 300lbs onto a 36" high floor. More weight with a bit of practice: Also comes with a built in-retention mechanism. Find an old one, modify to suit? There's a 650lb bariatric model. Copy the mechanisms and build your own?? TiredBirds
Harbor Freight has heavy duty wagons for like $70. They'd hold a heavy box easy and you could roll it around easy.

In and out of a pickup bed...well, that's a bit different.
