Mashley Adison
I have been told to find a MR2 PS pump for my racecar What years have a simple power up method. ? Thanks, MASHit .
mender
I don't know the Toyota stuff but if you list your application, maybe we can help you find a solution that may or not require an MR2 pump.
Mashley Adison
The current engine requires a stand alone electric power steering pump. Most have a VSS input an some sort of ECU. A few models of early Toyota have a simple power delivery.
mender
Again, if you list the application ... This might be worth reading: https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/1801906-electric-power-steering-pump.html
Ogren-Engineering
I have the Volvo electric pump on the FronkenRanger. Volvo and Ford used the same fittings so it was easy. Problem is it only runs in Limp Mode . Fine most of the time but you cant catch a little slide or even close to keeping up with w big slide. Looked around and no one seems to be able to over ride the ECU inputs. I removed it last week and looped the lines . I wil most likey use the Toyota Yaris or Prius assist box . Issue this way is I would have 2 torsion bars . I could maybe run some high mounted engine driven pump run off of the water pump pulley. The engine is way low and rearward with frame rails very close to the normal PS areas.
mender
I haven't heard much good about electric power steering systems that are used on a racecar.
Ogren-Engineering
Many solo cars and short track cars use them . Mostly the Saturn version. The Stalker and Birkin solo cars like them a lot. You cant turn the wheel fast e nough without some assist. The first cars used the MR2 pump but now more options are out there. Still have to deal with some electrical crap. I have a Saturn collum in a short tracker that works fine. The Yaris is supposedly simpler . And smaller . mender
I use the GM hydraulic ps pump with the WS6 rack that I put on the Fiero, great feel and fast ratio. No problem with flicking the wheel to catch an incipient slide, a major consideration in a Fiero.
Ogren-Engineering
Which pump? Electric?

Mashley Adison
Thanks Lizzy. The toy unit may work.
Administrators Bill Strong Posted January 29, 2018 Administrators Report Share Posted January 29, 2018 any 1991-1995 power steering unit will work. The relays and controller are all mounted in the frunk. The 2000-2005 MR2 Spyder also has an electric unit. I think it is a bit more complicated as it uses inputs from the engine ECU. Ogren-Engineering
I will also look at the early Honda pumps that run back wards?? Maybe they run the same direction as the CCW.engine and I can reverse mount one on the front cross member, facing the water pump. Honda guys.. Does the pump turn CCW? Thanks,MM
mhr650
This is what I am going to run, nice and compact, works great for Blitz… https://www.krcpower.com/ecommerce/aluminum-pumps/with-bolt-on-tanks/part-esp-10096100.asp

mhr650
And super simple to use also, a couple of feet of -6 hose and you are done. The outlet fittings have a drilled restriction in them and you can change out the fittings for one with a different orifice size to dial in the a mount of power assist. Wander around a pick-n-pull in the GM section and you'll find lots including ones with remote reservoirs. Get the hard line (high pressure) with the pump and you can splice that into your own hard lines to plumb your ps for about 10% of the KRC pump. I used the stock pump on my GM engine to run the WS6 rack; great feel and effort as befits a factory engineered package.
Ogren-Engineering
Yeah the remote reservoir is the way to go IMHO reduces foaming and heat.

Ogren-Engineering
We tested with no PS and a big wheel . I also used the narrow track front wheels. Worked OK and should be fine for Daytona . Teammate s say that the C4 Vette uses a reverse rotation pump as does the early Honda . I could mount those facing the engine and driven from the WP. I also looked at the early MR2 system . Costly and old .
