JCrist
First stop after working our way up from the back to P5/6 we made our first stop just before the 2hr mark. We must’ve picked up an upright on pit road because we were right on with mileage and there wasn’t even any drip marks coming into the pit stall. Put 15 gallons in and 15 came out (of the bottom). Would love to return the piece of aluminum to the team that’s missing it, holler. 😉 1
Boy Blunder
So... do we ban aero and eliminate the potential for loose parts disabling other cars - or do we mandate cells to prevent potential punctures of OEM plastic fuel tanks. Let the discussion begin..

wvumtnbkr
that looks like my spoiler attachment rods.... wasn't at this race, but we will use some wire to make sure that they stay attached to the car...

Let the discussion begin.. Im putting in a full aluminum undertray for safety purposes. /s @JCrist that sucks. Sorry to see that. Can I laugh at the last picture though?! in a semi related story, I work in underground mining and we once had a 4' rebar get jammed into the underside of a loader. It literally seemed impossible to thread something into this hole in the bottom of the cladding and it made its way all the way in and punctured a rad. Administrators Bill Strong Posted March 5, 2018 Administrators Report Share Posted March 5, 2018 Just put the OE pans back on the cars. That's why we ran the stock pans under the MR2s. We saw damage to the tank after a race. So put the stock plastics on and never had another issue.

JDChristianson
Ban all parts that could possibly fall off under any circumstances. No parts will be allowed on track that are not welded to the chassis. Engines transmissions differentials, suspension components included. Oh wheels and hubs must be welded on as well. And just to be extra safe no gas or other flammable liquid is allowed in any car on track 1
JCrist
Good bit of tongue and cheek humor here, good stuff. As far as protectors, I'd love to add an undertray to protect this but I'm sure it would add points ;). Nothing was removed, this is the stock configuration. 10 years of this stuff and I've never even heard of such a thing. Definitely a rare deal. Swapping out tank and on to the next one I guess

Swapping out tank and on to the next one I guess I wouldn't think so. You have proof that an undertray would be a safety item. Unless you make it into a full belly pan, then I think it would be 10 points.

Swapping out tank and on to the next one I guess I saw another E36 get a hole in the stock tank at a race not more than 2 years ago. We were watching them fuel the car on pit lane and started yelling and grabbing every fire extinguisher around when we saw the gas they were pouring in draining right out the bottom. I never heard what caused it and assumed it was some kind of million to one shot, now I'm thinking maybe it is something I should be worried about... I dunno, the last time we started talking about safety items on an e36 people started talking about free race suspension

Ws6 Mike
53 minutes ago, mender said: Kevlar is pretty good ... Agreed, for this to happen to a fuel cell an object would first have to penetrate the container (typically 22ga steel) and then puncture the bladder (FIA min 175lbs puncture resistance). Not saying a fuel cell would defiantly have stopped this but I've seen fuel cells get REALLY banged up and not leak a drop.
rod rammage
Now not regretting putting the 3/16" aluminum protection plate that shields our stock metal fuel tank. Come to think of it, there are a few scratches on the underside of it...
pintodave
I was just thinking the same thing... a fuel cell could still get punctured but should stand a better fighting chance. This makes me want to make a second shield on the leading edge that bolts to my cell frame... kind of like a skid plate. I know nothing about Bimmers, but looking at the pictures posted, I didn't realize the tank was in front of the rear end assembly... Eek. I'd definitely be making a skid plate or something... rod rammage
Our tank is forward of the rear axle, in the middle of the car. Leave it to racing drivers to find a way to damage a factory part that normally offers little to no trouble in the real world on the street.
