Number 6 piston is just gravel.  Lots of metal everywhere - intake, exhaust, every cylinder, head.  Most of the cams have scoring on them.  Two holes in the block plus one in the oil pan.  Two snapped rods.  Everything in the bottom end is real banged up thanks to the piston gravel that went flying everywhere.  Probably 8 bent valves.  No real evidence of what failed beyond a spun bearing on the number six cylinder (I think the number 3 rod went because of all the metal debris in the top end - collateral damage).  Based on google, I'd guess we've had an elongated bearing cap that caused premature wear somehow...all the other bearings looked fine, so seems oil pressure was okay.  Was definitely full of oil before it went out and our driver was only about 5 laps in when it went.

That's the plan, anyway.

New engine in the car and it rolls again.  Still gotta finish reconnecting all the wiring, torquing everything, and getting the intake manifold situated, then doing the break-in and such, but we're most of the way there.  Should be good to go for daytona assuming nothing goes horribly wrong.

No, duratech 2.5 still.  Stock ecu.  Would like to go to a megasquirt or something to make the eventual 3.0L swap easier but we just run the driveline in all stock form right now.

Right on.  My wife had a Five Hundred and man, that engine sounded great, even with the stock exhaust.  My current horrible idea is to get a Duratec 3.0 from the Lincoln LS (with transmission) and put it into my Ranger...then put another in a Miata.

We kicked around the idea of running an LS.  There is quite a long history of rod failures in the duratech 2.5's though, and no one can decide why.  The one we pulled out ran great til the day we removed it as preventative maintenance.  The spare we put in didn't last 10 hours.  Going to have to see how the third engine lasts.  Would love to do a duratech 30 in the Contour but we'll likely just run the 2.5 for a few years while we build a rear-drive V8 car to replace it.  Once car 2 is running, we'll have to see what we want to do with this one.

This is that Duratec 3.0, with twins, in our XP miata.  Had it at Gingerman once, it'll scoot..hope we don't have the same rod issues!

Glad to see this car coming back to life.  I was behind you guys at Rd Atl when the motor let go, was sad to see it happen.  I even stopped by and checked on you guys in the paddock.  My favorite paint scheme in chump right now....cant wait to see you guys back out there!!

Yeah, we were pretty upset! I mean, thems the breaks, but we just wish it could've done that closer to home! We've got plenty of time to get it together for Daytona and every one of us really want to get back to road Atlanta. Very cool track and our first away trip... Hopefully next year things go smoother!
