Watkins Glen International ChampCar Event Updates

Garages for Watkins are sold out. If a team cancels one might open up.

So I need your attention!
The plan for entering the track Friday has changed, and we need your payments.

First, as per usual, Please Please, read the Supplemental Rules Here. THEY HAVE BEEN UPDATED TODAY!!!
https://champcar.org/register/supplementalrules/359.pdf

These Supplemental Rules are new and updated. There are some specific changes from last year, please read them.

Trailer Drops and Early Parking: You can drop trailers Thursday night in the Lot 3 Parking area.

Friday Entry: The track building at entry 4A will open at 7am. Everyone entering the track MUST come here first. You will sign the waiver and get a wristband. There are no exceptions to this requirement. This is a track necessity and we will accommodate it. Once you sign in, you can enter the track and traditional Car Tech and Race Registration will open in the Media building at 9am.

Payments: We are developing a serious waiting list for this race, lots of teams still want in. So, if you have not completed your full payment please log-in and pay up. If we have not received your full payment by Wednesday, May 9th we are going to start dropping entries and replacing them with teams from the wait list.

Campers: I’ve received a lot of questions about camping spaces. Between the camping area along the front stretch and the camping area east of the paddock, there are plenty of spaces. Camping spaces are first come, first pick. There is a $50 charge payable to the security staff to open the power box in each camping area.

Need Fuel?: The gas pumps at the track will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. 93 Octane pump gas will be available.

Travel safe, and we’ll see you soon!

All the best –

Email to Team Captains - sent 5/17/2018

Remember when you almost got the call to drive an F1 race at Watkins Glen? Still wanna prove you can win at the Glen?

Then this is the email you've always waited for! First, one more time, please read the Supplemental Rules Here.
I know we've said this before, but the procedure to enter the track is new this year. Please read the Supplemental Rules.

Pay particular attention to this part.

YOU MUST HAVE A CHAMPCAR SUPPLIED GATE ENTRY WRIST BAND TO ENTER THE FRONT GATE. DRIVER / CREW BAND WILL NOT WORK. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Arrival Procedures: Friday - Teams will be required to first park in Lot 3 and walk into the registration building by gate 4A . Registration building will be open from 7:00am - 6:00pm on Friday. Do not pull trailers into the registration parking lot. In the registration office teams will sign the waiver and get a wristband that lets them enter the facility. With their wristband on, they will drive their truck and trailer back down CR16 and enter at Gate 2. Security at gate 2 will verify they have their wristband and let them enter the paddock. Late arrivals on Friday will need to camp in Lot 3. You will be able to sign and get a ChampCar issued wrist band at 7:00am on Saturday. WGI will not allow anyone in without a ChampCar issued wristband. Driver / Crew bands will NOT work. NO EXCEPTIONS.

And now the part you've all been waiting for!

Your Pit-Stall assignments are here, and your garage assignments are here.

Camping; The available camping areas are shown on the map in the supplemental rules. We are not doing any pre-assignments, but there are plenty of camping spaces available. The track charges a $50 fee to open the electrical power boxes. The fee can be paid directly to the track security staff.

Any last minute questions? Email me here.

Questions specifically about Registration? Email Katherine here.

Travel safe, and we'll see you soon!

All the best -

  • 2 weeks later...

The supplemental still says no fuel on site.  Is this correct or does it only apply to commercial fuel on site?  Will there be truck/pump fuel available for race cars or must teams bring all the fuel they need to run the entire day ?

You need to bring fuel, or head into Watkins Glen and get fuel.

Newbie here... what is the limit on the number of teams for this race at the Glen?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Not sure the exact limit, but ~105 cars started in 2017.  Probably somewhere around 105, but they take into account a decent dropout rate before the green drops on Saturday.  115-20 maybe?

Questions:

  • Supplemental Info says No Showers.   One of our drivers called the info line at WG and they said bathrooms/showers should be available during that time.  Can we get clarification on this please?
  • Supplemental says garages available for $100, through Champ.  Who would I contact to arrange one?
  • What are the options for Tent camping here?  Anywhere we can find some green space or is it discouraged?

Thanks!  Looking forward to it.

"Should" is the operative word. They were not certain when I wrote the Supplementals so I put No, I'll update as we get closer.

You contact me. I will send out an email when I'm ready to start taking reservations. I won't begin focusing on Watkins until after I get past the Daytona race.

96 entries now!

Can we do the double wide start again this year?

If I said no would it prevent any of you from being two wide by the time you hit the start?

I'm curious on the ordered starts with green flag, do you have to pass the S/F line before making a pass or can you start passing as soon as the green flag waves and you can see it?

As soon as you see it (and/or) if you are way back and the yellow flags drop (are removed).
