Mass air flow sensors - free/open?

Recommended Posts

At the risk of starting another forum frenzy, I haven't yet gotten an answer from Phil and wanted to see how others are handling this on their points breakdown.

Are Mass Air Flow (MAF) changes open? I heard that some teams are changing these out along with engine management systems with no additional points added. I think sensors in general are open but this one has the distinct ability to add HP on many cars, including mine. I'd love to ditch my super restrictive stock 1g DSM MAF sensor.

Any insight?

It's upstream of the throttle body, right?  And there's nothing that says you couldn't ditch it all together or run a cheap MAP sensor with your ECU of choice.  If I were king, I'd say it ought to be free and open.

That was my thought, just trying to see how others have handled this.

This is a common statement. And it's exactly why the series needs more help in the form of a Tech Committee. Run properly, you'd have an answer in a ~week. And it would be posted in the "Technical Q&A" forum where not only you, but those who peruse that section can get the information.

From what I've seen, upstream of the throttle body is open.

Didn't the rules say at one point in time that everything up to the throttle body was open?

I think so. Remember something like that. Probably one of those clarifying statements that got removed as part of the rule book shrinkage.

edit: I swear I remember it, but I can't find it in the 2016 BCCR.  Must have gotten it confused with the bit about what parts of the fuel system were open.  That or it was in an even older version I didn't save.
