Steering Lock Removal For Toyota AW11, AE82, etc.

Recommended Posts

I had a couple steering columns laying around so thought I might illustrate this for others. I photographed AW11 MR2 and AE82 Corolla columns, but should be the same for similar vintage Toyotas.

I saw Bill Strong's post on the topic and followed his suggested procedure. It was very easy to do to my MR2 with the column still mounted in the car.

Reassemble the slider and switch shaft, leaving the steering lock pin out. A bit awkward. The key release button may need to be pressed while you insert the shaft. Remember the shaft keys into a little notch. Return the shaft to ACC position as pictured, then reinsert the lock cylinder.
