Random_Tox
I had a couple steering columns laying around so thought I might illustrate this for others. I photographed AW11 MR2 and AE82 Corolla columns, but should be the same for similar vintage Toyotas. I saw Bill Strong's post on the topic and followed his suggested procedure. It was very easy to do to my MR2 with the column still mounted in the car. Random_Tox
Remove key cylinder: Turn to ACC position. Depress cylinder tab on top of housing, and I think you need to depress the key lock button. Pull cylinder out with key.
Random_Tox
You can drill one or both pins holding the steering lock cover. If you leave one you can hinge the cover open then zip-tie it shut.
Random_Tox
Pressing the key release button, pull out the switch shaft. It is keyed into a notch so you may need to turn it.
Random_Tox
Pull the slider and steering lock pin out the side.
Random_Tox
Reassemble the slider and switch shaft, leaving the steering lock pin out. A bit awkward. The key release button may need to be pressed while you insert the shaft. Remember the shaft keys into a little notch. Return the shaft to ACC position as pictured, then reinsert the lock cylinder.
