CA: 1989 Honda CRX SI - Take it to Thunder Hill!

Recommended Posts

Ex-Lemons multi-time overall winner (not in my incapable hands, of course, but I see no reason to make this listing a personal confession) and world famous:  http://www.roadkill.com/hella-sweet-lemons-car-week-yellow-submarine-honda-crx/, but otherwise relatively new to Champ.  2 Champ Car races in past year (Buttonwillow and ThunderHill).  Currently stored at Buttonwillow, just north of Bakersfield, CA.

Everything you need to go racing reliably today for a base price of $1989 with 2017 belts, 2017 fuel cell, 2018 near new tires on 2018 949 Racing ultra-light wheels, iPhone for Harry's LapTimer datalogging, 1 race on new brake rotors and DTC-60 Hawk pads, wired for radios with new antenna, blueprinted D16A6 engine and a handful of used spares.  Well sorted, well balanced, surprisingly forgiving and a lot of fun.  ~300point car in Champ Car, so plenty of room for modifications for more speed.  Better tuned than it was a year ago and some reliability gremlins fixed, so the car now runs 2:08's at Buttonwillow as it sits (have data logs to prove it) and would be quite competitive (compare with lap times from the last Champ race @ Buttonwillow:  https://speedhive.mylaps.com/Sessions/4602442).  More recently at a Lemons event, the car also turned the 8th fastest lap of all 119 entries, including being 0.4sec faster than eventual winner Cerveza Racing and having much better fuel economy.  The ergonomics easily accommodate drivers between 5'6" 150lbs to 6'1" 210lbs.

Additional stuff for additional cost (all negotiable prices):

  • Extra wheels and tires
  • 2017 fire suppression system (currently installed)
  • RaceLogic VBox
  • Coolshirt system and drink bottles + holder
  • Air purification / driver cooling system
  • Extra fuel jugs
  • Crew package (chairs, hand and power tools, tent, clocks, etc.)
  • Driver package (suit, helmet, etc.)

Also available:  A 2016 8x24ft v-nose enclosed Haulmark ALX aluminum chassis trailer.  Smooth exterior skin with finished walls, ceiling + cross vents, tie downs, dual 5200lb axles, electric brakes, near new HD tires, no corrosion, minor body dents/scrapes.  Ready to go cross-country and back; axles lubed 700miles ago.  No structural or performance issues -- tows amazingly well.  Also includes trailer cover, (4) trailer tire covers, locks, and some wooden boards to keep really low-slung Hondas from scraping the crap out of everything.  Similar to this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNDGOrID6RI except mine has a fully finished interior (sides, ceiling), spare tire, extended ramp, full rubber floor covering, a bulldog improved hitch, assorted locks and chocks, but without the port-side door.

Are you a good enough driver and team to win?  If yes, then to be really competitive, I'd:

  • add a turbo and ecu (should fit within Champ points) -- $700-$1500 depending on preferences should give you 7 to 8lbs/hp.
  • swap out the fuel cell to a smaller one (current 22gal cell is new in 2017, but too large, so and uses a dry break, so is X eligible as it sits).  It's a 90min swap as all the plumbing already exists -- $500-$600.

If not, put your $ towards track-time and enjoy the car and have fun -- I'll give you our maintenance suggestions so you can run (hopefully) hassle-free.

Why sell?  I live in Virginia, my West Coast compatriots can't commit to races very often, so am refocusing racing to the East Coast.  I'd keep it all, but got a quote of $2400 to move it cross-country and I already have many of the same things (tools, trailer, etc.) at home, so it makes more sense to sell it all (or at least the bigger/heavier items) and reinvest the cash on this Coast.

Bonus:  Whereas a bunch of other racers will sell you a car and run away, change their names, hide or even claim Presidential rape to gain witness protection, if you request, I'm willing to help you run the next event. I'll get us through tech, get you set-up in the car, help keep it running, and even analyze your driving performance if desired, or just drink beer afterwards and tell you how great you are and why it's a fluke that I'm faster.  Don't trust me to swap engines, rebuild a transmission, or weld a quarter panel for you, but most small stuff is fine.  I know where most everything is, know what is needed to keep the car going, and make minor adjustments to match the setup to your skill level.  Ask me whatever you like, right there in the heat of battle ("42") so you're better prepared for the next event yourself.  I can also probably connect you up with other paying drivers with experience in the car if you need some extra hands to make a full race team.  Some are fast behind the wheel, others are quick at the bar, but either way, all are good guys, who generally stay out of trouble and keep it fun.

I drove this car at Autobahn Country Club when it was the Clueless Racing car  back in 2013 and it was great.

Thanks for the shout-out!  Despite its appearances, there are some parts of it that are outstanding.  Whoever in Clueless Racing (you?  :) ) did the rewiring job, hats off to them for cutting out weight (literally!) and simplifying the electronics!

We've continued to refine the car for both speed and reliability.  Beyond power, stick, stop and safety tweaks, probably most noticeably, we "lightened the steering", so it's a lot easier on the arms over long (and competitive) stints.

Thanks again!

I didn't ever work on that car, 2 of the Clueless drivers drove for me in 2013 and when we were at Autobahn practicing with them I had the opportunity to do a few laps in the CRX. I remember the handling and braking being especially good, super precise and razor sharp.

bump....

Asking $1989 for the car as shown in the photo with good tires, fuel in the tank, ready to race.  More fun than a barrel of monkeys (only one monkey at a time really fits in this barrel).

Discussions are underway for forming a new West Coast endurance racing team (I'd still get to drive, but wouldn't need to worry about its whereabouts from 2500+ miles away!).  However, unless/until that solidifies, everything remains for sale.

Beyond the $1989 price (for negotiation):

  • Good spares (16 wheels, various tires, body panels, rebuilt head, new radiator, new Brembo rotors, new bearings, uprights, tools, jack/stands, dry break Fuel Safe fuel jugs, enough Mobil1 oil to bathe in, 12+ filters, axles, night-racing Hella lights, etc.)

  • Datalogging and playback system (Harry's on an iPhone, Racelogic VBox, GoPros, laptop)

  • Full driver cooling system (Coolshirt bags, lines, quick-change cooler, about 40 Nordic-freeze ice bags, drink bottles with one-way lines, cage mounted drink bottle holder)

  • Full fire suppression system (installed and nearly universally required in 2019)

  • 8.5' x 24' V-nose all aluminum Haulmark ALX enclosed trailer <-- will be sold last after all other parts!

Pick it up and head to Thunder Hill!  Will be race ready, with fresh fluids, pressures set, etc.  Need an extra driver for the event?  Let me know, I might be able to supply one of those as well.

Yes, am offering the car again for sale, after using it a bit in 2019 and deciding that it's still a big challenge to commute cross-country.

I've already begun my next car project/team on the East Coast and hope to have it all ready by the Virginia International Raceway race in August!

@Voodoo Child....think some of the people who visited our booth at the Long Beach Gran Prix might be interested in this car?
