Has it ever been discussed/considered giving laps to cars that are under the 500 point threshold?

Say a 300 and under car gets 10 laps and up to 400 gets 5 or 6.

This option allows teams a chance to remain somewhat competitive and keeping the spirit of the series intact.

I know there are variables involved but the idea is to reward teams for trying to keep the costs down.

That's all have a good morning.

424 point car just won Road America.

With a strut bar made of 1/2" conduit? I think you can safely call it a 400 pointer.

This has been discussed before.  I believe the consensus was that we don't want to reward people with "bonus laps" for bringing slower cars to prevent a further increase to the speed differential between the fastest and slowest cars.  Also, it can be difficult for the 500 pt car to make up laps in a race (for example: the 500 pt cars must take more risks in traffic to make up laps, caution and red flag periods benefit cars with "bonus laps").  Slower cars would also have better fuel economy, which would allow more flexible strategies.

Basically, bonus laps would lead to the top teams building the fastest cars they can with the biggest fuel tanks and the least amount of points possible.  It would turn into a race to see who can build a car with the most bonus laps (race to the bottom?).  The teams than needed the help from bonus laps will still lose to the top teams who will always exploit the system.

If bonus laps ever became a thing, I would recommend a 1989 Jaguar XJS with a 1UZ swap, factory 4 spd auto, and 26 gallon fuel cell for 177 pts.

With all of that said, are 500 pt cars more expensive than 200 pt cars?  I don't think there is a correlation between points and cost.  There is definitely a correlation between running a competitive team and cost, but that cost can be offset by experience, ingenuity, and preparation.

You are spot on with my thoughts on the matter.

Based on what I’ve seen of that generation Jag, do you start with the base points of the Jag or the base points of the rollback it is riding on?   😂
