Tech Response time

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

When an e-mail is sent to tech for clarification or inquiry what kind of wait time can you expect? What is the point of escalation if your questions are unanswered?

Thanks!

I sent a brief question to ‘tech@champcar.org’ Sunday night, had an answer from Jay before I got to work on Monday.

Response time will go up if it’s not a simple answer.

Yep, some things are a quick yes/no, others take a bit longer. Normally you'll get either an answer or a quick "we're working on it" within a day or so, not sure with the holiday though. I'd say give it 3-4 days and if you haven't heard anything send a follow up.

Same one I PM’d you about a few weeks ago. I even sent another email last week with and added Mike Chisek, no response.

If you're so worried about asking the question publicly that you are unwilling to do so, then an extended wait is almost guaranteed.

The forum is a good source for info, but I’m not looking for opinion, I’m looking for actually clarification.  For all I know my emails are sitting in Techs spam folder.

I read pages and pages of how one person interprets one rule and how another person interprets the same rule another way.  Instead of starting a thread that gets multiple responses that in the end mean nothing other than opinion I figured I’d go the actual people that are going to say yes or no.  Im not here to stir the pot. I believe the forum is a great source of discussion and opinion but not always a great or quick source of factual answers. Lately it’s been a great source of entertainment.

IMO, these questions should go to the TAC and be responded to by either a designated TAC member or on a rotation basis. If the answer is one that's in question, at least the sender should be given some sort of update.

This was a problem in the past. People are trying to build cars, plan mods, sum up TCV and often need answers or are stuck waiting for a clarification.

The TAC does not make tech rulings or decisions or clarifications and thus cannot answer questions. The TAC can make suggestions or recommendations to the BOD. Tech is who can answers questions and makes rule interpretations etc. and who ultimately does tech and impound.

TAC members can try and answer simple tech questions but even then they are just expressing their personal opinions that may or may not be in agreement with tech.

@hcsi99, I brought up your long wait time and PM’d you the response.

Sorry to to hear it has not been addressed yet.

Tell Bill to upgrade the email system. I have been deep into a long list of clarifications with tech but it has been hampered by the fact that he can't receive pictures at his ChampCar email. As they say a lot of times a picture is worth a thousand words.

I asked a question on 10/8 about splitter vs airdam, and another on 11/7 about valvetrains, apparently neither warranted a response.

We are switching out our intake (back to stock for our engine), to free up 50 points in prep for spring tech...  we will put our intake back on if tech agrees with our interpretation of the rules, if not we should have enough points to race without laps.

I always felt like you were at the whim of whoever tech'd your car, the we dont do it that why here response from tech...

Been wondering about this distinction myself.  Perhaps we're on the same page.  Almost all splitters include a portion that arguably is an air dam.  It's basically a requirement on a car with anything other than a perfectly straight/flat bottom bumper edge/surface.  So is that one thing or two?  Hopefully they post an answer to the answer page.

Send the question to me now I am still up answering emails and spent the entire day  going back through old emails. If your inquiry is not answered not I do not have your question.

Splitter versus airdam.

Air dams (10 poi ts) are typically (but not always, so dont waste a bunch of band width) the non OEM vertical surface starting in the area below the headlights or bumper and run to the lowestest point on the front of the car. As soon as the angle changes from vertical the air gets turbulent slows down and the air dam starts to act as a splitter.  So BMW guys watch out for those splitter lips (10 points).

Splitter (10 points) is typically the horizontal aero component.

Send me a picture (1000 words) if you are not sure we will be on the same page.  I rather text prior to a event than "talk" in tech line

So do we save points of we make our airdam a " \ " shape instead of an " L ". So instead of down and out we just 45deg it out to the same point.

So what's the difference between a splitter and a flat bottom/undertray?

Or where does one start and the other end?

Right?

Airdams aren't listed in the rules.  The airdam is what holds my splitter up so it's free right?  Or is my splitter, undertray, airdam now 30 points?

How far back does your splitter go?  Where is  your undertray.   The splitter can go back to the center of the front axle
