Miata Tires

Trying to develop a plan to run a 2001 Spec Miata but unsure what tires are recommended/allowed.  Currently running Hoosier SM7's but someone told me they aren't allowed.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First off, read the rule book....

That said, 180tw is the tread wear rating limit.  Hoosiers are a no go, plus you'd be going through a lot of them in a weekend.  Most popular tires seem to be Hankook RS4, Dunlop Dirrezza Star Specs, Bridgestone RE71, as well as others.

Expanding on that, following the above advice  in the 200 TW range will get you a whole race without having to worry about tires, Anything else won’t last as long or  probably not legal

Excluding  RE 71 , they are fast  and legal  but don’t last

We use them for rain tires, got the entire Barber weekend out of them and they are great in the wet/cold.  True though in a normal weather event anywhere from 3-7hrs has been reported on life.   I would also say the Toyo's are similar in being fast but won't last.

We get around 30hrs out of a set of RS4's in our Miata.  Also, word of advice since they are no longer a sponsor, the Maxxis tires, in our teams opinion, were rubbish and easily 2 seconds off pace of the RS4's as well, so I would stay away from those unless you are out of options.

Perhaps we are just too slow with the Chandler Miatas but we've had no problems getting a full race weekend out Rival S, 225/45-15.  Did the VIR 24 one set per car as well as AMP on a single set.  Last time I ran Piggy at Rd All, we did the fully race on a set of 225/45-17 Rival S.

You may be confusing the Rival S and the Rival 1.5S......

Not at all, we were on latest edition of Rival S.  For full disclosure, I work for Michelin/BFGoodrich motorsports...

Of course other folks results vary as function of tracks, cars, driving style, etc. etc...Depending upon who we have in the Chandler cars the tires may go longer on one car than the other...We had more than 30 race hours on one set between VIR, AMP and a  track day at Roebling.

Now had I run those same events with our old SAAB 900, no way the front tires would have gone that distance.  The original Piggy was a piggy when it came to eating front tires at many tracks.

Welcome! The Rival-S 1.5 is a no go as well. It's a dedicated autox tire and won't last a race.

What are we doing wrong? We ran 14hrs at Sebring and still have half of the tread left!!  245-40x15 on 9x15 wheels.

I have never tested them because they are $50 more per tire than the RS4s. Other teams have and they have the life like a RE71R.

If you're getting 14 hours out of them that is great. You're lighter as well. Use the tire more to get faster :)

No, just a miata!  We also have found we get a fair amount more time out of the go fast tires due to overall weight of the car.
