Someone hit a safety vehicle on Saturday?

Unfortunately yes that's correct, thankfully no one was injured.

Slippery roads and poor visibility contributed to the accident, however in those conditions it is all the more reason to slow down and respect the yellow flags.

These safety teams risk their own well-being to keep our drivers safe and having fun, all our drivers need to make sure we return the favor by watching and respecting flag statuses and Emergency Vehicles.

The safety team received the Sportsmanship Award because they were pretty cool about the whole incident.

That's kinda hittin' with kid gloves, isn't it? I'd think if a driver hits a safety vehicle, they should be required at the very least to sit out a year as a hard-and-fast, strict liability rule. There's simply no excuse whatsoever. Even at Sonoma where they'll flag at the bottom of the carousel but not throw one at the top, making it difficult to have a controlled slow-down during the fast downhill left and surprise flag around the corner (note: I have no idea where this incident actually occurred). Any notion what penalty was actually meted out on the driver?

Or because it's the second time in less than a year lol

It's pretty hard to ever want to put blame on the safety truck driver, but with the trajectory the truck was on I think the Miata would have had to somehow stop to avoid him.

Standing yellow could have been a waiving yellow.  Still, no one slowed down in the least.

^This. We had to have a CTJ meeting at the end of the lunch break on Saturday. So there's stuff on us to fix and stuff on Sonoma to fix. Visibility was pretty poor on Friday and Saturday. Lots of PUY on Saturday and drivers complaining on not being able to see the corner worker stations.... Sunday was much better. Apparently sunshine improves everyone's disposition. Although it was pretty cold chilly (this according to our Wisconsinite) and windy.

Back home in NW Wisconsin where it is what we call "pretty chilly but not too bad for this time of year" -- neg. 10 this morning, sunny and calm.  That will change overnight tonight with another snowstorm coming.  Trailer is somewhere in Nebraska as we speak -- with a slightly scarred Maserati.  Overall great race -- we learned a lot about the new build and what needs to be fixed.  We certainly have the power to stay on the pointy end, but handling is still a challenge and we need to get some balance in the car and some better control over boost onset.  The workload driving that car in the wet is just too high, and even dry, too much throttle too fast brings on an instability that is just fatiguing.  Ran good times up until the tag with the wall on Sunday, and get the car put back together and found that the new (used) strut assembly we put on would not allow for the original tire to be installed so we finished the race on 15" street Conti's.  Still managed some 2:02s on those, but we weren't pushing real hard anyway because we didn't know if there were other problems.

Many people thought we blew the engine but it was just tire smoke.  We had some oil smoke before that time, but figured out that we were pumping too much oil up into the cam boxes (new oil pump and more volume that we had on the original engine), so we will need to adjust the supply orifice diameters on the cam boxes down a bit.  We also lost our mounted radio on Friday afternoon and managed to cobble up a solution using only a handheld mounted inside the cockpit and an adapter into the IMSA car harness.  Worked fine.

We accomplished what we had come to do, and the staff was again great and very helpful.  We will get the car fixed within a few weeks and get ready for Daytona or Road America, then WG and Indy.  Thanks to everyone -- including all those staff folks and racers that keep us coming back to Champ Car.  Love Sonoma and we hope to qualify to come back there next February for the National Championships.

that thing was wicked fast and could drive about anywhere on the track

Speaking of the Miata turbo.... that car blew the head gasket Sunday afternoon, so I'm thinking we won't see 1:48s next time. Mebbe got to power down that boost just a tad.

Quite the opposite, they were 1:54 last year but the turbo blew up the engine as well.  Looks like they turned the power up.

Tell you what. I'll go ask them what happened. Last year... and this year.

No it could not and should not have been.  Both cars were off track = standing yellow by rule definition.
