New to iRacing - Noob questions

Recommended Posts

I'm finally bitting the bullet and getting a sim rather than burning a stint getting up to speed at new tracks:

It seems like Oculus Rift is the best choice but it's out of stock.  Is that the best option for VR?  Will a 1060 or 1050i be enough to run it?

Also does anyone know of a PS4 style controller that works with iRacing?  My co-driver is a controller guy, not a sim guy.

Thanks,

Roy

Hey Roy, welcome! Also, remind me to pick your brains about NA Miata aero and suspension setup at some point....

A few of us who have tried VR with iRacing are using the Lenovo Explorer - it's cheaper than a Vive or Rift and can be set up to perform pretty well. If you have any further questions on the setup specifics, ask here and one of the HJ team will help you get going. A 1060 or 1050Ti should be fine for it, you'll have to turn down some graphical settings a bit but it'll be perfectly race-worthy.

As for controllers, I would honestly advise against it - the simulation of iRacing is such that a controller really doesn't translate well to the handling model and it'll be very difficult to be competitive or safe on track with one. A used Logitech DFGT will clamp right onto the desk and provide an affordable and reliable route to a wheel/pedal setup - I had one for 4 years and it worked just fine.

Cheers,

I just ordered the Lenovo, thanks!

My co-driver will only use a controller, I'd like to find a pressure sensitive one ideally.  It's more to learn the track than set a top time or compete in this series.  He's very proficient on GranTurismo with one.

If your mate is set on a controller, the PS4 ones can be used directly on PC, either with the USB cable or a Bluetooth adaptor. There's no official Sony driver but appear to be a lot of good third-party options available. There are probably some pointers on the forum for getting it working with iRacing specifically but I have no experience of that.

Does your co-driver use a controller in real life races in your ChampCar?

my 2 cents - For learning a track, I see using a controller as a tiny step up from just watching in-car video - you can get the gist of time between corners, what turn comes next, what happens if you change a line, but that is about it (unless someone has an uncanny ability to transfer the small movements done with a couple of fingers into what needs to be done with feet, legs, hands and arms).

Using a sim for learning the tracks isn't just about what turn comes next or a 'best' line through a turn.  Using a wheel and pedals can help with muscle memory for those parts that are used to control the car IRL, reducing the learning-curve time at a new track much more than visual learning only.

Ok, so I must be doing something wrong because there is no way playing a video game can be this difficult.

I started with a quad core 8th Gen i7 with SSD and MX130 Geforce graphics card.

  • Move windows to developer mode
  • Update windows generation
  • General windows update
  • VR Is now connecting to windows
  • Download iRacing
  • Download Cheat Preventer
  • Download new DivX Drivers
  • Update iRacing
  • Update iRacing again
  • Download Steam
  • Link Steam to Iracing
  • Download Steam VR
  • Download SteamVR to Windows add in
  • Upgrade NVidia Drivers
  • Still getting Could Not Create a Rendering Devices
  • Could not find any support other than it might be a graphics card issue.

Lets try this again:

  • Purchase 6 x Core 8th Gen i7 with SSD and GTX 1060 (GB)  (VR Ready) - Thanks PrimeNow
  • Setup Computer
  • General windows update
  • Download Steam
  • Download Steam VR
  • Download SteamVR add into to Windows
  • Download iRacing in Steam (This doesnt seem to work)
  • Download iRacing from the site
  • Download Cheat Preventer
  • Download new DivX Drivers
  • Update iRacing
  • Upgrade NVidia Drivers
  • STILL getting Could Not Create a Rendering Devices

I am about 10 hours in trying to get the freaking game to play.  This doesn't seem to be in their help section that I found and the only VR support I am getting are videos on youtube in Spanish.    Does anyone have any tips on this?  Am I going about this the wrong way or is iRacing really this difficult to use?
