Medical Insurance / Race - Supplimental Policy

Recommended Posts

We are working on getting power to the ground with our first build and hopefully get in a first race before end of the year.  Lot's of 'firsts'.  Thinking through race preparation tasks / things and as a small business owner family we have self-funded health insurance - which has riders for a few things like 'automotive racing'.   This creates a coverage gap for me and my son.  Just wondering what anyone else might be doing for their own situation and insurance providers you might be using for gap coverage.  I found a possible option here but not sure this would cover road racing.

Thanks for your input in advance.  This forum has been a great source of information, advice, and parts as we work hard to making our first Champcar race a reality!

I'm still sorting out if I want to setup under an LLC since I'm the car owner and will have other drivers than immediate family.  Just need to protect my assets from exposure to lawsuits in event some issue occurs.

In this thread I'm looking to find what others are doing for medical coverage in event they, like myself,  don't technically have coverage because of exclusion riders on their policy.

Back in the Condren era I believe the series carried some kind of supplemental insurance to cover injuries to participants, maybe Bill could check into that for you.

As stated in the BCCR and your registration, you must carry your own insurance. ChampCar insurance only covers the building that you destroy when you hit it at 160mph because your brakes fade. Any medical expenses are covered by your personal coverage.

2019 BCCR

1.3.3. Warning: This is racing, racing is dangerous. Your car may be damaged or destroyed at any time. You may be injured or killed. Do not participate in a race, in any capacity, if you do not understand this and do not get into a race car without thinking about this.

1.3.4. Insurance: ChampCar carries and provides insurance for facility and event liability; however, ChampCar is NOT your primary health insurance provider. ALL COMPETITORS MUST HAVE PERSONAL HEALTH AND/OR MEDICAL INSURANCE TO COVER THEIR MEDICAL NEEDS (ambulance transport, initial medical screening, etc.). YOU SHOULD NOT BE ENGAGED IN DANGEROUS ACTIVITIES SUCH AS AUTO RACING IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ADEQUATE PERSONAL HEALTH INSURANCE PROTECTION. PARTICIPANTS THAT DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE WILL BE PERSONALLY LIABLE FOR FINANCIAL CHARGES AND FEES ASSOCIATED WITH ANY MEDICAL CARE.

I'm kind of amazed at the low replies to this thread - I thought there would be more people in my situation but I guess not.  We are on the search for supplemental insurance and will post something back here with my findings for anyone who is interested.

If I had to guess, it is just that most people haven’t checked their policy....

Would be very interested in what you find.  I have dug into the fine print on our policy.

Good piece of advice...check your policy. Helicopter rides aren't cheap! And there was no Condren special or coupons....speaking from experience.

Just FYI..  AirMethods and AirEvac both have annual membership you can buy for around $75 dollars I think that cover you and your family in the event you ever need a ride...
