Administrators Bill Strong Posted June 27, 2019 Administrators Report Share Posted June 27, 2019 August 31, 2019THOMPSON SPEEDWAY: 12 Hour Enduro, $1000Thompson, CT"The Thompson 12"Early Pay Discount Ends: July 2, 2019Entrant ListDownload Supplemental Rules and Event Info Thompson is upon us! And welcome to the 12-hours of Thompson! First, as always, please read through the Supplemental Rules here. There's lots of good information and the answer to many questions. Arrival time: On the topic of arriving. Please do not rush to get there too early. Our load-in time starts at 12:00 noon. The entry point to the track backs up quickly to the main road and creates problems. Tech Inspection: You will need to take your car through Tech inspection before coming to Registration. If you have a current Annual Tech you can come straight to Registration, otherwise you must go through Tech first. Only one member (preferably the Team Captain) needs to come through Registration. Practice: Many of you are running the practice / testing session on Friday. Please remember that you still need to get your car through Tech and registered. Also, any new drivers must attend the Novice / Champ school. We will not keep Registration or Tech open beyond the scheduled close time. Also, please remember that the practice session is being run by Thompson Speedway. That means you must adhere to their rules regarding safety and on-track behavior. Gear Check: Drivers can bring their safety gear to Gear Check at any time. Memberships and Payments: Please check your team's membership status. Some drivers have expired memberships. It will greatly speed up the registration process if memberships and team registrations are fully paid up. Novice / Champ School: Please note the time is 5:00pm. You must attend this meeting Friday if you have never raced wheel-to-wheel before, or never raced with ChampCar before. If you have new members on your team, or if you have not raced with ChampCar this year you are encouraged to attend. Look at it this way, the more we discuss things on Friday, the shorter the driver's meeting on Saturday. Still reading, wondering about your Pit Assignments? Well wonder no more... Your Pit Assignments are here. Camping and the Paddock: First, let's cover some definitions. The "Gate" is the front gate building out by the main road. The "Bridge" is the bridge leading over the track and into the paddock. Yes it has a small metal gate, and that's why I'm defining the difference. Keep Reading.... Everyone, all of us, everybody must be out of the paddock area Saturday night. So, when I say you can camp inside the gate, I mean you can use the designated camping areas near turn 1, or stay in the large parking areas before you cross the bridge. You cannot camp in the paddock area Saturday night. Another renter is moving in early Sunday and we need to be out. To prevent the issues we had last year we are going to ask that you do not bring camper units over the bridge into the paddock. If your hauler has sleeping quarters in it that's fine, but remember you must be out Saturday night after the race. One more time if you want to print out the Supplemental Rules for this event here. If you have any questions about the Thompson race please email me here. The ChampCar Staff Entries for The Thompson 12 updated August 21, 2019 Team Name Car # Year Make Model 1. shutupracing
Just now, Bill Strong said: because that is when the host (the track) told us it was going to be? http://www.thompsonspeedway.com/reservations I think Dana is going to try to help and get this extended. 4:30-6:00pm hardly counts as a "test day". More like a "test hour and a half". Hopefully a few more cars sign up! This tends to be a fun event.

Administrators Bill Strong Posted August 14, 2019 Author Administrators Report Share Posted August 14, 2019 Dana tends to SMS text me, because he lives in 1990. Currently the one cell tower we have in my county is down. But Verizon says that they have not got any reports of downed towers. But then if everyone uses VZW and the tower is down, well, it's impossible to contact VZW. Which is what is happening. So... I will await contact from Sir Dana. @DuncanDana Please see above 1

Thanks Bill... Someone get the number off that bus.... About the track time Friday. It's important to remember that the practice time for this event is run by Thompson Speedway. So the times for Friday are set by Thompson. The times we have were what they sent to us at the start of the year. We list them in our Supplementals, but we don't control them. As of the 4th Thompson was planning to change the times to 1pm - 6pm. The times should be update on the track's web site, definitely go with the times they have listed. JONCOFF
Among other things, I work as a flagger at Thompson. There has been some confusion about the "test day" hours Friday, August 30. The operations director, Scott Mayo, told me late this afternoon that the decision is track time from 1pm to 5pm for Friday. This activity is run by the track, not by Champ Car, so sign up at the track's website. $250 for four hours is not a bad deal. And Scott did say he hasn't had a chance to get with Dana on this yet. But the track is set, and will be staffed for testing from 1 to 5.

PeriSoft
Quote To prevent the issues we had last year we are going to ask that you do not bring camper units over the bridge into the paddock. If your hauler has sleeping quarters in it that's fine, but remember you must be out Saturday night after the race. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this sucks. I get that we need to be out Saturday, but responding to that by making us keep our camper outside the bridge during the event doesn't actually help us (or, I'm guessing, others) get out faster, and it's an absolutely huge PITA for the entire race weekend. The only thing that forcing us to not have the camper in the paddock does is ensure that we have to make another bunch of back and forth trips between the hauler and the camper before we can load out, which has the opposite of the intended effect! During the race weekend we change in the camper, eat in the camper, put on contact lenses in the camper, etc. All our cool helmet ice gets stored in the camper because it's got a freezer, and we're going back multiple times a day through race day to restock. It takes us 2 minutes to drive the thing over the bridge Saturday night, but having it outside the paddock is, frankly, going to make the whole weekend way more miserable than it needs to be. My teammates are starting to grumble about not coming back to Thompson again, which would suck even more, because it's an amazing track and a great atmosphere. But we really feel like this isn't going to get people out earlier and is just going to make life harder for all the teams for no real benefit, and we think it would be awesome if ChampCar would reconsider the no-campers-in-paddock rule. Again, we totally get that we need to skedaddle Saturday night - that's lousy but there's a good reason. We can do that! But please let us bring our stuff in so we can grab lunch or take a nap or change clothes or whatever without blowing off 20 minutes walking across the track. It would be much appreciated and would drastically increase the chances we'll be back next year! Administrators Bill Strong Posted August 21, 2019 Author Administrators Report Share Posted August 21, 2019 I was there last year when the track was trying to close up after a long weekend. some people left the site with their cars in the garage, tools stills filling the garage, and campers in the paddock. They had good dinners. But the staff was stuck at the track. The instructions should be clear now. and yes, this is nowhere as bad as Indy was. They had good dinners. But the staff was stuck at the track. I was there last year too; I think the problem then was that we (our team, that is) got blindsided by the "out Saturday night" rule so we just didn't know what to expect, and had to rush to get out. Speaking for us, we only went to dinner because we had no idea the track wanted us out that night! So, that didn't really have anything to do with whether our camper was in the paddock; it was just that there were communication issues and misunderstandings about whether we'd be able to stay. That's obviously not going to be the case this year since the communication is better. Either way, not letting people park their campers in the paddock isn't going to change anything for someone who'd leave their car and tools in the garage and boogie! I'm just not sure how the 'no campers' rule helps get people out substantially quicker. For us and probably for most people it's packing the hauler that takes the time, and if things go well we obviously can't really start that until the race is done; the camper is literally two minutes to zip up and tow out. Anyone who's going to leave their tools in the garage is going to leave them in the garage whether they took their camper in anyway! Like I said before, this is actually going to make things take longer for us getting out. Am I missing something here?

JONCOFF
In the roundy-round racers restrooms which, I believe, are open all the time, on the left as you are waiting to cross the bridge to the paddock.
DuncanDana
Am I missing something here? Yes. First, I said I was "asking" that you not bring your campers in, but I also acknowledge that some teams have the camper as part of their hauler and equipment. I'm not going to post someone at the bridge to inspect each unit. This issue isn't how long people took to leave Saturday. The issue is the number of campers in such a small space and the campers who had no intention of leaving until Sunday morning. I get that having a camper for your team to function from is helpful. But last year we had teams bring 3 and 4 campers then set them up in a small compound. I can see a need for a single unit, but not a need for 4. Last year people where caught off guard by the word "gate" and where they could stay Saturday night. That's why this year I'm defining the difference between the "front gate" and the "bridge" to the paddock.

So, if we come in with our hauler and a pickup+short camper trailer with our food/cool system ice/gear and aren't taking up a ton of space, are we good? We tend to try to stick ourselves in the boonies anyway. I wouldn't belabor the point if this was just some luxury thing, but as it stands it really does have a legitimate impact on running our race weekend.
