Virtual Drivers Meeting

Ok, the BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front). We are shifting our race date to Sunday.

Still reading? Great! A little back story. Just like everyone else, IMSA and the broadcast networks are looking to get racing back on TV and they want to run a night race on Saturday. But keep reading, cause there's some excellent positives for us here.

The IMSA event is for TV only, no spectators. Except us. We will be loading in Saturday, which means we will have access to see the entire IMSA event run. Their practice and qualifying will be running on track while we are conducting Tech and Registration. When their race starts, you guys will be the only ones able to view it live. If you ever wanted to see an IMSA event from the inside, behind the scenes, this is it.

In fairness, there will be some changes and some challenges. The biggest ones are garages, pit-lane, and Tech.

The IMSA teams will be working out of the Yellow garages. If you were assigned in Yellow I will shift you over to a Blue garage. Also, if you are a multi-car team, I may need you to work out of a single garage. That way every team can have access to a garage.

Because IMSA will be racing into the night, we will not be able to set up pit-lane until Sunday morning. We will work with the track to try and get you access as early as we can Sunday morning.

We will not be able to run two Tech lines. We will really need to limit the number of cars in Tech. If you have a 2020 Tech sticker please do not come to Tech. Even if you've made a small change (emphasis on small) do not come to re-tech. If you feel you need Tech to really look over the car please contact Jay Mauney here. He can can arrange a video call prior to the race.

I know this is a change. If you're like me your reserve of change tolerance is getting low. But we are really focusing on the positives of this. We've always had a terrific relationship with IMA, ISC, and DIS. They could have just bumped us. Instead they chose to contact us and work with us, including allowing ChampCar members access to their race. Credit for that goes to the reputation you guys have earned for ChampCar as an organization.

The updated Supplemental Rules with more detailed times are here.

We are doing everything we can to get ChampCar races running again, and make this Daytona event a great time for you!

Any other general questions about the Daytona race please contact me here.

Thanks very much!

We're looking forward to seeing you all in Florida to celebrate our Independence Day!

Pre-Tech by Skype

For those individuals who are concerned about interacting with ChampCar tech staff and the transfer of germs/viruses/bacteria, ChampCar is offering Pre-Tech by Skype from the safety of your own garage.  This is a full vehicle inspection done the same way as it would be done in person.  If you are interested in this service here’s how to sign up:

  • Ensure you have what is needed to do a video call (high speed internet connection, camera, audio).
  • Contact jay.mauney@champcar.org and request an appointment.  Appointments are limited so don’t wait too long.
  • Print out a ChampCar tech sheet and completely fill it out before your meeting.
  • At your tech appointment you will show Tech all aspects of your car and answer any questions tech has.  If your car passes inspection, Jay will send you an email confirming your success.
  • When you arrive at the track have one team member drive your car to tech and pull into the line marked “Pre-Tech Cars”.  A ChampCar tech official will ask for your confirmation email.  No email and they will ask you to move to the regular line.
  • With your email in hand, the ChampCar tech official will walk around your car one time to confirm everything from your Skype call is there.  They will then place an annual tech decal on your car and you are done and ready to race.

Despite the nature of this inspection being via teleconference, all the same rules and policies apply.  You are required to disclose all details of your car.  If aspects of your car are hidden and later discovered at the track, whether at pre-tech confirmation, post race impound or anywhere in between, you can be moved to EC or disqualified or removed from the track.  Our hope is that this new option can alleviate the fears some of you may have about direct contact this summer and help speed up our current tech process.  If you have any questions, email info@champcar.org.

@Bill Strong can you make sure the Fatcrack team is pitted and garaged next to @Mazmarc so I can annoy the crap out of him all weekend?

Best to send an email to the event director.

Ok. so paddock and pit you guys over by the lake. got it!

:)

I don't do that job.
I sit in the upper corner office, with the nice washroom, and coffee shop. You need to contact @DuncanDana at dana.morrison@champcar.org He is a floor or two down from me.
Kinda near the mailroom.

I know I know Dana is the man to speak to. The post was just some forum banter. Also trying to get a rise out of Marc Dana but technology is probably besting him at the moment.

JAS will be going. For sure. @mindspin311 is coming but I think @riche30 isn't allowed anymore because of an issue at the Krispy Kreme on International Speedway Blvd.

Good news is my probation over the things done with, near, or around that Dale Sr. statue (that were never proven true in court) has expired.

Do we know in advance which vendors will be @ Daytona @Bill Strong  @DuncanDana? I am due for a helmet, pretty settled on a Stilo composite, but would prefer to try on before I buy to get sizing perfect.

I just confirmed with Ron that he will be there with his rig again. With something as specific as a helmet I'd call him in advance so he can make sure he brings a few options for you.

Just received this from Discovery Parts.  I'll add it to the event emails and if I can motivate the Drone from Marketing he can add it into the Supplemental Rules.

Saw there is over 100 registered now, do we know what the maximum capacity is for this race team wise?

So we've always been able to get up around the high 120's, I could squeeze in 129 at the max.

But, now that NASCAR has reduced the field size, there's only 40 marked spaces on pit lane. Also, they backed up the impact protection area at pit out, so the overall pit lane is shorter. So that means 120 is a firm max for car count now. Last year I had teams pitting from behind the fence right at pit in, they seemed to like it, but it was crowded and I'd rather not do that again.

We're at 105 right now, so 15 more teams and we will hit the sold out mark.

And even at 120, the field WILL spread out pretty quickly and after a few hours it's great racing with LOTS of open track.

Whats the current deal with lights for your number panels?  This one totally slipped my mind and having never run any dark races we have never needed to worry.  If i just order reflective panels, will that be sufficient?  Rules say lights are "recommended"?
