ChampCar iRacing Special Event: 8 Hours of Charlotte

Recommended Posts

Thank you once again to all the teams who have competed in our iRacing special events at Daytona and Road America. We are pleased to announce the third event in the series, the 8 Hours of Charlotte. The original event has been postponed to July, but we have no such limitations online and so will host a fully broadcast and managed race on 2-May. There are three classes available and the top finishers in each class will be equally compensated in the overall standings that we are running for the special events. There might even be a prize for the top teams, so please consider your entry carefully!

We look forward to putting on another popular and professional event for our community of racers, and look forward to greeting you on the grid.

Important Information

As we continue to review and refine our format for hosting these special events, please see the change summary below

  • The Volkswagen Jetta and Pontiac Solstice have been added in place of the Porsche Cayman and Mazda Miata. In reviewing the replay and footage from Road America, it was evident that the excessive closing speed created by the pace of a Cayman GT4 was responsible for a number of incidents. The combination of these three cars will produce multiclass racing at a reduced average speed and create a more "ChampCar-esque" experience
  • Please note we will be using the "Roval" config of the rescanned (new) Charlotte. Although this varies slightly from the layout that will be used by ChampCar, this will provide a good racing configuration for these classes in the confines of the new and shiny facility
  • The incident limit before the first drive-through penalty will be extended to 40x to account for the longer overall race distance. However, it is very easy to accrue incident points at this circuit. Drive conservatively and your result will be greatly improved
  • There is one more fast repair available to teams, due to both the longer race and the possibility of the sharp kerbs causing suspension damage to the car. Treat it like your own ChampCar!

👎 we are spending time developing setups for tracks and having drivers spend time driving this platform. Please do not make this change. Drivers need to be more aware of their situation and driver better.

Removing the GT4 made sense but I am interested in the logic behind the Mx5. Wondering if there is a know issue with the software between different generation of vehicles?

The Global Mazda has a bug that can make it unrepairable even with fast repairs, we want to avoid that.

Anyone that is worried about setups, run the Jetta as it has the simplest setup sheet on the service.

Yeah man, I thought we figured that out a while ago...

LOL you can't call people out like this 😂. It makes us realize that we are old and losing it which just makes it worse. Just let us repeat our stories and smile.

Track limit question for @Rapido.  I did a Miata race at Charlotte last week and I was shocked at the track limits that were allowed to be used. Are we allowed to cross and go below the white and blue line? In these 3 pictures, iRacing allows you to go way beyond that line without penalty.  The biggest one is exiting the infield onto the banking, pic #2.

@CoachMK21 - really good point and something I should have mentioned in the initial post. The track limits through the infield/chicanes at Charlotte are pretty generous, but we won't be enforcing them to a stricter degree than iRacing already does. However, we will be keeping a careful eye on driving/passing using the apron (below the solid blue line) in the banked sections of the track and persistent behaviour of such is likely to earn a warning and/or a penalty.
