Best tires for the rain

Recommended Posts

The tire size you run will determine what you can get to a large extent. Among 200TW tires the ones I know of with the most tread grooves are the Toyo R1R, or the Nankang NS-2R. if those are actually any good or if you can get them in your size I have no idea. Tire Rack lists an Ultra High Performance All-Season category, if you can find something in that category that fits your car it may be a good choice.

Glad you brought this up, I was planning to volunteer this weekend at Charlotte and now that I have looked at the forecast, I know what to pack….

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is considered by many to be the best tire in RAIN conditions, with the Continental Extreme Contact Sport a close second. These two tend to be  better than the typical 200 Treadwear offerings in actual raining measurable water depth conditions, but if the pavement is just wet, damp, moist, etc - the 200TW tires can keep up, and the crossover for wet to dry happens pretty fast.

Supercar 3, A052 and RE71R are quite good in the rain at full depth, but tend to hydroplane quickly as the tread wears.

Raining I would go with Continental Extreme Contact Sport.  Otherwise A052 is a the best wet tire, followed by RE71R.

We bring 205 RE71Rs and 215 Conti's to races just in case.  You don't want to be stuck on the Conti's in the dry, so if its wet and drying, an A052 or RE71R is going to be better.

Supercar 3

Any experience with these compared to the other options out there when it comes to dry performance?

The number of brands with large track tires is limited so I have been looking at these as an option. Seem to work well on Gen6 Camaro's.

They’re in the noise on pace with the fast tires and wear longer. Sizing isn’t great for more typical champcars, but there are several wider and taller sizes that could work on big cars.

Yeah, to get a decent size tire for the weight of the car I've had to look at non traditional Champcar tires. Which makes getting good info on wear and such a bit more difficult. Guys may say they got 6 weekends out of a set but that doesn't translate well as they are not running 8 hours a day.

Big tires are expensive so making it through a weekend on one set is the goal.

Thanks.

They are calling for pretty heavy rains this weekend at the Charlotte race.  We run the Azenis 615K+ which are not terrible in the wet.  Does anyone have specific tires they use in the rain and like?

NONE, they all suck, signed Gen III F-body w/ modest V8.
