wd6681
My question is more relevant to my tow rig, or should I ever race a newer car. I am a loyal user of NGK copper plugs in everything. My vibe is the performance world agrees. My question pertains to using them in a modern vehicle. Other than shorter than OEM service life, what is everyone's experience with 'going backwards' and using copper plugs in a platinum or iridium OE application? I ran copper plugs in an LS with great success years ago. Wondering if anyone else has more experience with other COP systems. Thankyou
mhr650
Should run fine, the fancy new materials are only used to increase service life. On the other hand, on a stock engine I don’t think you would see any performance benefit so why give up the extended service life of the newer plugs?
TiredBirds
^ what he said. I have a 99 540i sport 6 speed, it has 229,000 miles. I recently replaced the plugs. The ones that the forums said to use were like $10+ each.... I went with your standard Autolite... runs just fine.
Jab31169
I just finally changed the plugs/wires in my 09 tahoe. 172k...oem original plugs in it. I went back with the same ones, Iridium's I think. Man, feels like a different truck now.

Thankyou I also like copper plugs, that's all I used to run in my race cars, OBDII runs timing advance based on knock sensor data, copper ground electrodes tend to run cooler allowing more advance, and there by more HP, the 95 Neon I used to have was almost 1 full second faster at RA with that being the only difference! The life span is much shorter though.
mender
Easier to read the plugs as well, and I don't feel bad tossing a few sets of them during a dyno session.
Rick.Cook23@yahoo.com
What life do you guys get with copper plugs in your race machines? I change mine during off season - bout 4 race weekends per year. But if I’m loosing that much power - heck - for my 4 banger they are only $10/set - I’d change them after every race day. how much life in race car for copper plugs? A year shouldn't be a problem, just they won't be good after 30,000 miles in a street car!

Copper plugs in a driver would last like 35-40k. Race car such as yours should last a year or two. Pull them at the end of the season and check them.
