Rapido
As some of you may have seen on ChampCar social media groups overnight, there are reports that ChampCar BoD member Doc Waldrop has passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Whilst we will wait for an official communication from ChampCar for a formal announcement, it would be remiss of me not to mention this before our race this evening. Simply put, the ChampCar iRacing Series would not exist without Doc. We at HJ got to know him at our first VIR 24 in 2017 when we brought him a beer in the commentary booth after we said he could do with one whilst broadcasting, and then later gave an interview with him to explain our roots in iRacing. The next year, Doc reached out to us to float the idea of a tie-in ChampCar iRacing championship and asked if we would run it. Since then, Doc was a tireless supporter of the series, acting as our voice on the BoD and a conduit to Mike Chisek and Dana Morrison in convincing them to continue to support the series as it got off the ground. He joined our own broadcasters in the commentary box periodically, as well as using his own excellent ChampCar.Live productions to discuss iRacing and even convincing Bob Varsha to draw our 2020 prize winner live on air at Road Atlanta. Doc was a warm and welcoming presence at every ChampCar event, bringing his unique style to live broadcasts and seemingly knowing everyone in the paddock. We were able to catch up at Watkins Glen last weekend and he was very excited about the new CCiS season and our plans for 2022. His passing leaves a hole at the very center of the ChampCar community, and we will all miss him deeply. There will be a minute silence held at the start of the race this evening, with more details on this posted in the event thread this afternoon. Rest in Peace, my friend. 15 4
