GoPro Settings and Power

Recommended Posts

My Google-fu is failing me this morning, so it's time to ask the pros...

I just purchased a Gopro9 black and would like to capture 8 hours of continuous footage. I purchased a 256gb card and set the camera at 1080 (I don't need slo-mo). I also added an external power source (usb) with waterproof case.

Can anyone help with setting this up to turn on automatically when the external power comes back on after a pit stop? Or transition between battery and external power to keep the camera running for the entire race? I'd also be interested in your video settings.

One final thing... I used this during a test day and found that video is captured in 9 minute chunks and not a large file. Is it possible to capture one large file or do you just have to put it together with a video editor?

TIA

People use the battery power packs to power camera and car Power  to charge battery pack so power to camera is not interrupted. File size is an issue I have with my fake gopro. Camera seems to save small files and then play it as if it was one file. There is some maximum size for these files but I don’t recall what it is.

On my 8 black, I had to remove the gopro battery from the camera to run it continuously off the external pack.  The 256gb card ran like 12hours at Charlotte.  I will also suggest locking the stabilization if you run on a banked track.  50% of my footage at CMS was looking at the floor board.

Not sure there is anything you can do about the clips.  Mine also saves in 15-20min blocks.

Great suggestions.  If I'm understanding this correctly: Switched USB from my dash to charge an external battery pack, and the battery pack will keep running the camera when the car is turned off in the pits.

Bremsen - do you have a photo or link for the external power pack.

I can't find my exact one, but similar to this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H7LFPYX/ref=twister_B06XQV5DDP?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Its just secured with HD velcro to an aluminum plate.  So far I've only run the 8 on it, but didn't have any power/recording interruptions all day at Charlotte 14+hrs. The card finally maxed around 9:30pm.  I plan to incorporate my old 3 silver as a rear view and run it on the other port.

Clip size is adjustable on our gopro3, as for cameras that shut off mid day, check to see if the input power is 1 or 2 amps out of the usb, 2 amp power is too much and overheats.

Not sure about the newer go pros but switching to 1amp input power solved most of our issues. (no battery pack go between)

Doc did a write up on this subject a couple years ago (or maybe I sent a PM or something), I did exactly as he said and couldn’t be happier with how my system works.

Use this battery pack:

https://www.amazon.com/XTPower-MP-10000-External-Battery-10000mAh/dp/B00935L44E/ref=asc_df_B00935L44E/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312111908612&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16723808528786516356&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021571&hvtargid=pla-524313202289&psc=1

and use a ‘battery eliminator’ (can’t remember which).

Plug the battery pack into a charging circuit to replenish charge during the race, and plug the camera battery eliminator into the battery pack so it continues to run during pit stops and will continue for many hours in the event of a failure in the charging circuit.

You will need to do some cutting in the gopro case to route the battery eliminator wire.

Edit: I use a GoPro Hero3 silver+
your model will likely differ with case and battery eliminator

I think the max file size is 4GB (used to be, may be larger on the newer ones). You could turn the resolution down to 720 and get more minutes per file.

File size is dictated by the memory card.  FAT32 formatted SD cards have a 4gb file size max, which is why the videos get broken up.
