Rapido
Back to the ChampCar grind after our fantasy rounds of summer, and it's time for the big one. AS the VIR 24 is renowned as one of the toughest ChampCar races of the year, so the iRacing Series will test our drivers to the limit. Please note that this round features a couple of unique parameters as befitting a special round of the series. First off, this race is 2 hours in length to match the maximum stint time of a real ChampCar race. This means qualifying and the race start an hour earlier than the other rounds this season (to ensure an on-time finish). Please be ready to register accordingly to ensure you do not miss out. Please also note that the in-sim time multiplier is set to 8x. This means that the time will advance 8x faster than normal when in session, meaning that (hopefully) the race will start at dusk, rapidly turn dark for the majority of the race before finishing at dawn in the early morning sun. The race will test the field to their limits, much like the real race. Good luck! CoachMK21
@Rapido Will the practice round tonight also follow the above time schedule (6:30 practice, 7:30 qualifying and 8:30 race [2 hours])? Thanks!
Rapido
Yep, practice rounds always have the same parameters/settings as the championship rounds.
mostmint
Great practice race. Jay, Mark, Clinton and I all had our time at the front. I have a newfound respect for the difficulty of staying in P1. Led 23 laps and was really in the mix for about 2/3 the race until I made a mistake in turn 3 that ended with a close encounter with the barrier. 9 cars entered, and somewhere over an hour in there was 1 second between P1 and P3! Crowded at the front.
CoachMK21
It was fun. All of us tried out best to not be in the led with mostly little mistakes here and there. I just lasted longer and never had a big off. That was my first real effort in the dark and I loved it. I can't really count racing with CC at Daytona at 10 pm as night racing. It's so well lit it might as well be day by VIR standards. You really had to focus and once the sun came up, driving was easy.
CoachMK21
@RapidoSorry to bug you, but I was getting set up for tonight and noticed there wasn't a session showing up for tonight. Usually it's already there. Thanks!

Jab31169
Kind of a crap show for me last night. Got home, got registered, then I had to run to my father-in-laws to help him get back on his feet...literally as he fell and couldn't get up. So once I got that taken care of, I get back to the house and its 7:25pm. So I get one lap and get qualified p9. Everyone was pretty civil for most of the first lap until someone decided the inside of south bend was a good spot to pass...well it pushed me wide and I clipped some grass and ended getting shot back into him that put my wheel pretty close to 90* from where it was supposed to be. I drove a few more laps to see if I could make it work but it was just making me slower than I normally am. So I pitted early and let crew chief decide my fuel load. I also took the time to take my shoes off as I was hitting the brake and the gas at the same time just trying to brake...made for some terrible corners. Got back out in 17th place and just drove as best I could. Had a few offs, caught a bumper to the rear of the car going into one, but just tried to run consistent laps in the dark. Crew cheif came on and said I had 51 mins of fuel left but we still had an hour left in the race so I had to stop for another splash. After that it was just keeping @mostmint behind me. I had nothing for either 4th or 5th place. Ended up p6. Fun race, I love the mix up of the 2 hour races and night time is always fun. When are we gonna get some more team events?
mostmint
@Jab31169 for a while there your alternate paint scheme and me staying close made me wonder if you had an imposter lol. I had multiple problems including too much fuel, a large complete stop off at the left hander after the climbing esses, and a general loss of using my best driving fundamentals for the middle of the night stint. Could have at least put some pressure on if I could have fixed a couple of those. I hit Keith Carlson going into turn 1 early on which I attribute to misunderstanding the extra speed from the draft and panicking instead of threshold braking. Broadcasters say what they want I was not looking in the mirror! Glad he didn’t get spun out or off track from that mistake. P7 is my best finish to date in this league so can’t complain.

Yea changed up the scheme a bit and just picked some random livery. Needed a change in the Miata.
CoachMK21
It was pretty frustrating for me as well. Started P8 after not being able to put out a lap any better than 1.3 seconds off my best. I'm always cautious at the start, so I lost a couple spots pretty quick, then had an off that landed me back in 13th or so. I pitted on the same lap as Alex and had moved up to 2nd/3rd before rejoining in 9th. Moved up to 8th after Andrew's off he described above, but then I went off the next lap in the same spot, but had enough damage that I had to pit and get fixed up and rejoined in 12th, I think. Managed to get back to 10th overall. I didn't drive very well during the night, like I did on the practice night. I probably averaged 1-1.5 seconds slower a lap last night than before and I think the track conditions were pretty similar. Got down to a 2:14.0 after the sun came back up trying to chase down Clinton. Oh well, it was really fun and I agree the longer 2-hour races are great. I wish the field was larger, since I spent a lot of laps all by myself. Thanks for putting these on Team Hugh Jass!
Justin Hall
Yeah that was a fun race. The two hour and 8x time multiplier definitely add a lot and really highlights the importance of consistency...which I was definitely lacking. Still happy with 2nd, just felt like I had a real shot at winning but couldn't get out of my own way, lol. Congratulations on another win @Hugh Jass!

My qualifying times about the same distance back from my best. I also struggled to string together the best I could do in all the corners, though in the early light on 30 lap old tires I made mid 2:14 laps. I think the practice and official race get set up at the same time with the same settings but there was a glitch in the matrix and both of them triggered last week. Many thanks to @Hugh Jassfor getting us back online and on track, even if not identical to prior week. I was also a lot slower at night and not at all clear why. May fact check this and watch the replays to see if there were significant differences or if it really was just me reverting back to old bad driving habits.
