Money Shift Racing
This weekend was a goofy one for the Money Shift Racing Honda Civic. We dialed the car in during Friday testing and was able to click off some high 1:47 laps with full splitter, wing, and air dam. Started sending other drivers out to get some seat time. Next driver had an off at Turn 6 which essentially destroyed the splitter. Took care of that and finished out the test day without any other major issues. Saturday we started mid pack and started to develop an issue with our shifter early on. Every so often the shifter would jam us out of gear and shifter position didn’t translate to anything useable. Luckily we had a very coachable driver in the car (Tony) and he was told to find 4th gear and finish out the stint. Chris went in second and noticed almost immediately that the issue was a worn/broken Shift cable. He also ran his stint in 4th gear while we formulated a plan for a quick fix during the next driver change. We rummaged through our trailer and came up with a fix that would probably make McGyver proud. Chris was called in at the end of his clock and the fix was applied. I (Kevyn) buckled in and got out on track to find that with some precise revving I was able to shift between third and fourth gear which allowed me to pick up our pace and click off a bunch of sub 1:50 laps. It seemed like we were doing well. Tony finished off Saturday and was bit by a bum shifter again and managed to 4th gear the car to the checkers with a 10th overall and 1st in class. Something we are definitely proud of considering the hurdles we faced. Saturday night we went over the car where we found some play in a wheel bearing and we tried to further sure up the shift cables. Grabbed some dinner and a couple drinks and called it a night. Sunday was not as kind to us. In the early going we encountered two small Racing incident contacts (one our fault and one not out fault). These incidents caused a wheel bearing noise and the car to pull hard to left on the straights so it was brought in for inspection. We found a bad wheel bearing and a bad ball joint. We made the fixes needed to continue and sent another driver out who almost immediately reported of shifting issues and a limp clutch pedal. To which we simply replied over the radio “4th gear”. He abliged. we finished the race on Sunday but it was a mediocre feeling at best. We had tons of fun running with everyone. I felt this was a pretty clean race with a bunch of great teams. Special thanks to our fuel guy Jay Storm, our wives, and ChampCar for putting on this race. Also to Eric Cayton from Sublimnal Racing and Andrew Johnson from RBanks for the misc parts assists. If all goes well we hope to see you all at Mid Ohio in three weeks! congrats to RBanks Racing for another dominant weekend! GDyn
This was a great weekend for Bad Gas Racing and the #300 Brown Trout Miata after the disaster we had at ACC. Was our 4th ChampCar weekend and our 2nd at GMan which has definitely become our home track. We had our best finishes ever this weekend at 7th and 10th overall with both being I believe 4th in A class. We made some good upgrades to the car over the winter and our pace on track improved from a fast lap of around a 1:51 flat last year to running a 1:48.7ish this race. And that lap was done at 3pm on Sunday so it definitely should be able to do a 47 in the morning. While I was driving during the final stint on Sunday I was quite proud of being able to pass Two Bros, Buzworks, TRMotorsports, and Visceral but obviously this was just a personal victory since we were a lot of laps behind all of them by that point in the race. Big shout out to Two Bros for helping us out with some fuel on Sunday. Had a ton of fun with Narwhal swapping positions all weekend even though they got us both days at the end. Always a pleasure drinking some PBR's with the PBR crew. Looking forward to MidO and BeavRun to close out the season. Come find us in the paddock we got a Busch Light for you!
tneker
Udder Chaos #55 Neon lived up to it's name sake this time around. Friday - we chased a mystery missing issue seamingly resolved by swapping out a brand new spark plug for a used one???? Saturday - An accidental discharge of fire suppression system looked like our weekend would end really early (thanks again Troy for the use of your spare), and then a broken rear wheel stud put us in the paddock for a bit. Sunday - We had a transmission failure early enough in the day that we felt compelled to go ahead and replace to get back on track. Getting back on track in the afternoon was short lived and intermittent thanks to a cracked front wheel hub, which once replaced allowed us to go out and break the throttle body with two laps to go. Still smiling and gratefull for the comraderie of champcar and enjoyed the battles on the track when we were actually on the track.

Indysupra
Subliminal racing wants to say thanks to the Champcar staff for putting on an great event. We had fun hanging out with Andrew and Dave from Rbank. It was good to see Kevyn and his team again also. We had a tough weekend. Ran strong all day Saturday. With over an hour to go I noticed the afr’s we’re creeping up. Few laps later it would got 17-1. I could keep it under 15-1 if I just slightly tipped in So I made the call to stay out. During the last part of the stint I talked to the next driver coming in about how to drive the car and make it live. We were able to hang onto 2nd place. The Wally keeps eluding us forsure! Sunday was going well, that long yellow hurt us bad and helped others so that put us back in the “chase” the way fuel stops landed. After the first stop we noticed the car had blew thru the drivers outside pad. We have had nothing but issues with the wilwood brake system on the car. So I had to swap out that pad at the next stop. That cost us some time. Ended up breaking a rocker stud with an hour to go. That has been our first engine related failure in 3000 track miles with this car so we are happy about that. All in all good weekend and we came back with some valuable data to make us better as a team. The vette has been a difficult car to campaign to say the least. Thanks to everyone that stopped by and offered words of encouragement!
Technical Advisory Committee mcoppola Posted August 26, 2021 Technical Advisory Committee Report Share Posted August 26, 2021 (edited) Well, after close to 4 years trying to "Stay Focus'd", our SVT finally made it out to a race again. Major updates were made over that time including rebuilding the broken motor, w/porting and compression improvements; new Getrag 6 speed with Quaife LSD; 15x9 wheels, 245/40/15 tires vs 17x9's previously (50 lbs total unsprung reciprocating weight loss); aluminum F/W w/single disk clutch vs OEM dual mass (more reciprocating weight loss), p/s elimination; lighter AGM battery, lightened the BIW for a total of +200 lbs overall weight loss, plus a bunch of other reliability and safety updates that hopefully all added up to something... We dyno tuned the car last October and ran 2 test days at Gingerman back then, plus 1 day at Waterford Hills a few weeks back. Other than some suspension tweaks, the car ran flawless throughout. We knew we picked up speed, but weren't sure exactly how much since it was only testing. PWR before and after: 2510'ish lbs/170chp (OE advertised) = 14.76:1 2325'ish lbs/190chp (170whp dyno = ~190chp?) = 12.24:1 ?? (approx) I mentioned the car ran flawless - wish I could say the same thing happened Saturday, lolz. 1-2 laps into the race, the driver reports low voltage, then a dead engine. We check things out, determine the new alternator is not charging for some reason, and begin to remove it and send someone for parts. After removing the alternator, we found the wire terminal/cable from alt. to starter was bad. Replaced that terminal, lost over an hour and decided to use the rest of the day to test and get seat time. First test item was to see if we could go 2 hours or 65 laps on a tank of fuel with the stronger hp motor. We have a 15 gallon fuel cell + surge tank. (I use 65 laps as a 2 hour benchmark at Gman, as past winners average 250-260 laps over 8 hours there.) We also did a full 2 hour stint Sunday morning, but only made 61 laps in that time frame, so more speed is needed to keep with the leaders. Speaking of speed, forgot to mention - the car went 1:52.4 a few years back, we went 1:52 in testing last Fall, so i was hoping/feeling the car was capable of 1:50 flats or slightly better. Was pleasantly surprised with our first driver Saturday morning setting FTD at 1:48.872. we had a lot of 49's over the weekend to back that up. Another pleasant surprise was my son getting up to speed. Neither he, nor I, have a ton of W2W experience, he was getting good and catching up to me back in '17, but hasn't raced since then. The practice days must have paid off as the kid beat the old man both days by a tick or 2. Our driver spread has improved, but there's always work to do there. Saturday FTD 1:48.8, slowest driver = 1:51.4 / Sunday FTD 1:49.1, slowest driver = 1:50.4 We ran a fairly clean race 7 hour race on Sunday. I ran the 2nd stint, and was 1 of the first cars to come up on the 944 that oiled down the track and was parked just off the pavement in turn 10, with their drivers' door facing the track. The entry to 10 is blind, 90mph, stay left and brake as you crest a small hill. First thing I saw once I hit the brakes and realized the car was sliding in oil was the 944 driver looking at me, as my trajectory was his door. I was lucky enough to release the brakes, get enough grip to turn right, then back to the left as the car started to slide sideways off track. Again, it gripped enough and I was able to leave the pavement somewhat perpendicular to track. Only thing left was could I get stopped before ending up in the swamp?! That worked out ok and we got back on track, only to circle around for a half hour under yellow, and then stop for the quiet hour break. These 3+4 hour races at gingerman have become interesting, presenting different strategy opportunities. Our previous strategy was to stay out until 1 hour after the 1 hour quiet break and pit then, thus opening up pit windows for the final 2 stints. The long yellow in the morning SHOULD have changed our strategy, but my radio became unplugged and later the rest of the team told me they decided to just stick with the plan. We talked strategy at the break, and were possibly going to attempt another 2 hours after lunch (based on fuel burn and the long yellow), and had other options too. I eliminated 1 option in the afternoon with a mistake, PUY about an hour in. At that point, we just changed drivers, fueled, hoped for and played the final short caution to make our final stop, and finished in 8th place. Overall happy with the car and the teams' performance. We've made some big strides, and still have more planned improvements to come. I've been working hard and sometimes been having doubts about it all... I'll tell you what, hanging out with you fellow racers, the ChampCar staff, and actually getting out there and doing some RACING instead of driving around uncompetitively, made it all worthwhile. Can't wait to see you all again at Mid Ohio if all goes well. Thanks to all who've offered advice, help, and words of encouragement. I think Gman was on the chopping block at that point, and they decided to drastically lower the price, it got into sell out territory pretty quickly and it seems like there is some kind of correlation there that needs to be kept in balance since numbers have dropped off with the return to normal pricing. Technical Advisory Committee Andrew D Johnson Posted August 27, 2021 Technical Advisory Committee Report Share Posted August 27, 2021 There is no way I can thank everyone I need to for all the help we got this weekend. We were short handed only having 2 drivers and one other person with a fire suit. We showed up without any sort of EZ-up or shelter, and my Dad had just worked 40 of the last 48 hours on the car to get it ready. We pitted next to our friends Money Shift Racing. They have helped us all year with parts and service at the track and also designed part of our brake system in the off season. This weekend we didn’t need any parts, but they helped us numerous times in our pit stops and offered us a tent to use. You guys are awesome! Hotels and lodging can often be tough in South haven as it is such a fun town. Subliminal Racing had a few extra beds in the house they rented, and let us stay with their team. Subliminal also helped us in a few pit stops even though we were trading spots back and fourth on the track all weekend. That’s what I love about ChampCar! Thanks guys. My partner in crime on Saturday had a medical issue that left our team without a driver to finish the race on Saturday. I was on track when I heard over the radio that Troy Isadore would be driving the final stint for us. I would normally be concerned about someone jumping in the car that had not practiced, but not Troy. Troy had driven the Honda multiple times and always did a flawless job. Sure enough, Troy once again killed it with a wonderful stint. It was great seeing so many friends all weekend, racing in the Midwest is always so much fun as we have so many friends at the track. I was especially happy to see Mike Coppola back on track after not being able to race in a long while. It was great seeing him and his son driving together to a top 10 finish. 90racing.com has been on point all year getting me every part I need to keep my Honda on the track and out of the pits. We ran Falken tires on Saturday, and I really liked how they performed. We switched to Maxxis VR-1 tires that we had won with at Nelson Ledges in the rain, and the car was better than Saturday! Robin and the entire RBank / 90racing.com team are just amazing to race with. Thank you! I know I missed a ton of people to thank but all your help is much appreciated. Thanks to the Champcar staff and volunteers and to Gingerman Raceway and their great team. We lost our window net rod on Friday and sure enough the Gingerman crew found our part and got it back to us as soon as the practice day ended. 7
Technical Advisory Committee Andrew D Johnson Posted August 27, 2021 Technical Advisory Committee Report Share Posted August 27, 2021 (edited) Sorry to see the Bavarian Mustache works car go out after a car spin in front of them and their car get caught up in the incident. Ben, Tracy and team are always fun to race against and fun to share a beer or cigar with. It was great to see Tyler at the track after adding the newest member to his family too. The MiElan group is always a great group to race against and I was sorry to see them have issues all weekend. One thing I know wasn’t an issue was their engine tuning. Man these guys can tune an engine, and every time they podium and tech makes them pull a plug you get to see what perfection looks like. Thanks Andrew, an improperly installed engine bearing on the 150 car had us swapping an engine on the test day...then two trans failures within 45 minutes of each other on Saturday pushed us a bit far. After swapping the spare into the 150 I took it out for a lap, no 2nd gear, kicked itself out of 3rd, and 4th and had a nasty hum led to us deciding to just call it a weekend and pack up. Nice to see everyone, my apologies for not being the most personable, with the heat and all of our issues, tensions were a bit high.
