RS4 teams - do you reuse same tires multiple races?

Hi,

Do you RS4 teams really reuse the same tire for multiple races?

A lot of people I talk to always put on new tires each race.

In that case the cost savings is "only" $1000 (4 tires vs 8 tires). Also we sometimes gets flats, so you need 5 tires I guess.

Thinking about switching to save some money but not sure if the argument holds.

We use them for 2-3+ races, depending on race lengths. I now Visceral uses them for 3-4 races. I can get 30+ hours out of them. When they get that old they have heat cycled out and get hard. I have yet to run the tread out of them before they heat cycle out. I found they loose some time and feel slippery at the end, but not a ton and not undrivable.  10-20 hours- maybe a second slower, 20-30 maybe 1-2 seconds slower, 30+ maybe 2-3 depending on how they were used and the track.

Ok thanks, so for us I think we would buy a new set each race and have a crazy amount of practice tires.

It feels a little strange to skimp on tires since you are paying several thousands for a weekend anyways and time off work, babysitters etc etc etc

How quickly they cycle out depends on how hot they get, so they'll last longer on slower cars. My test track gets them really hot, and by 15 hours they're useless.

If you durometer your tires you'll notice the outsides get harder faster.

That’s only 10hrs on a new RS4. Lol.

FWD 2500lb car and that was the LF at…….Calabogie.

We did 4hrs at Tremblant and you could still read the Hankook impression on the middle bar.

Hoping for much less wear at Mosport.

Good thing it wasn't an RE-71R...

Looks like a camber adjustment might help the wear. I assume Calabogie is a little hard on tires. ;)

I have about 60% and 70% left on the fronts after about 9 hours.

When we replaced the engine Saturday night, the strut was not installed the exact same way and we had an extra 1/2 degree of camber.

But we still do wear the inside slightly more with the camber set correctly.

Calabogie does not count. The asphalt is made of granite or something and they made it really sharp to have grip. It has dry level grip in the rain. We got one day out of RS4 there, 7 hours, and usually get 30+. I heard teams in AER getting 2 hours out of a set of RE71r and a lot of teams ran out of tires early. Calabogie does not count. I even heard they even planned to sand/grind the surface smoother and some bigger orgs will not race there.

We take heat cycled out tires and use them on personal cars, race car trailers and demolition derby cars

I just had a date code 2016 rs3 separate on an overloaded car during a road trip.

entirely my fault for taking an antique tire on the road, no drama I changed it before the shake got bad.

~2000lb full aero Miata. We usually get 2-3 races out of a set as long as the alignment and flat spots are controlled. I’ve heard that they lose some time from race to race but it’s hard to know. Podiumed on a 2 race old set at CMP but were a couple seconds off the top runners.

Mosport is SUPER easy on tires. Brakes too for that matter. Cars are the main consumable there from my experience...!

Balls are consumable there also.  You need big balls to go fast there so they get used up quickly.
