This will be our first race going into the night. Does anyone have any good lessons learned to share? (lights/glare/patience/etc...)

Your rear-view mirror becomes just about useless. It's very very hard to judge distance to the car behind you, so remember that when you're passing someone. Apex lights are key, especially on the South course. Dim your interior down, it helps your night vision. With the low car count so far, it shouldn't be too bad. Night racing can be intimidating at first, but once you relax it can be quite fun. Come back for the 24 hour and you'll be begging for the sun to go down.

yea...I started watching in car video and became very aware of what I'm getting myself into. I'm excited for the first night stint, just don't wanna booger-up the asset! Depending on the outcome, 24h is on the radar..................

One thing no-one told me that I think is worth mentioning. Pay close attention to closing speeds.  For me my depth perception seems to get a little out of calibration for the first 10-15 mins of night driving. When you are coming up on a set of brake lights or entering a turn its harder to tell speed differentials so be mindful of that.

I think this is amplified by fresh drivers starting their night stints going slow into t1 (getting comfortable), when others have been running 1hr+ in the dark already and are up to race pace. Those brake lights can come up a lot quicker in the dark for some reason.

EDIT: found some good stuff from Bill!

I have found that switching to an amber visor helps cut down some of the glare from approaching cars.

Be prepared for cars passing you under yellow- it always seems to pick up when the sun goes down.

Put some non flashing colored strip lights on your car- it will be easier to track your car from the pits (On south course, almost all of the track is visible from pits).  Make sure you can see them from the front of the car, so you can tell when they enter pit lane.

Add a redundant brake light, will keep you from getting black flagged if one of the primaries are taken out.

  • Put a strip of tape across the bottom of your visor.  You can position it to block the lights in the mirror.
  • Go overboard on the lights, more is better (up to the max the rules allow).
  • Have some good lighting in the pits. Something to light up your canopy.
  • Either have a red overhead light for the interior or some type of easily accessible light in the car for the driver that might stall or go off track, etc.
  • Make sure gauges/instrument cluster can be dimmed as someone said above.

For those of us who have never driven and with no practice planned, can we walk the track Friday?

(I'll send email to Dana, as well)

There's a track day on the full course on Friday, so it will be pretty late before track is cold.  You sold us some wheels on FB, right?  I'll send you some notes.

This is the future of Champcar. Half the registered cars at Harris hill are Miatas as well. The easy button.

Mazda sponsored the track at Harris Hill for years. 90% of the cars in the garages and parking lot are Miatas.

Noted.

The miata is a great car at most tracks and there are tons of point and options to play with on the A & B models. It is the best option so we will see more of them over the next few years.

The C models are pretty damn good right off the assembly line. Slap some big ass tires and a little aero and they are very competitive cars or slip a 2.5 swap in one and put her on a diet and they pass v8's on the straights and murder them in the twisty stuff.

If I was building a new car it would be a C without question. Some big 245's with a wing, a splitter, and some cooling stuff and have fun! Or a MR2 with a V6 swap 🙂

That formula worked well for my team this past weekend! Got this E36 for $700 just over 5 years ago. Starting VPI is 475 for a 325is, so there’s only so much more money you have to spend to have a competitive car.
