Rapido
Welcome all to the first round of the 2022 CCiS. As is tradition we are starting our season at Road Atlanta, just as the ChampCar Endurance Series will do in person on the weekend of 5/6 February. A new addition to the schedule this season is the Ford Mustang, one of the first cars to come to the iRacing service and still enjoying a vibrant racing scene as part of the Production Car Challenge official series. As ever in the CCiS, this will be a fixed set-up race, using the iRacing baseline setup for this car with 8.2g of starting fuel. This should be enough to get a decent start but not enough to get to the end of the race, which means a pit stop for fuel will be necessary. Sunset happens quite early at this time of year and so there is a chance it'll get a bit dark towards the end of the race, so exercise caution and race cleanly to ensure a good finish. I look forward to seeing lots of new faces on the grid, and please remember to join our Discord server (link at the bottom of this post) for information about the league and voice communication in session. Good luck! tyler_j
I am excited to turn some laps with you all. Purchased the Mustang last night and practiced a bit, T7 is slickkkk with cold tires. It should be an exciting first few laps! Too bad the sim does not do snow, I need some practice with my snow lines. Edited January 26, 2022 by tyler_j 2
mostmint
I’ll be there for practice but probably wobbly. I already have the Mustang. I can’t figure out why I would have bought a Ford for any reason - so I was assuming it came with the subscription. mostmint
This year we had 31 cars make laps in the practice race - on par with 32 from last year. I kinda forgot the first few races have a lot more cars and new or less frequently seen drivers. Other than an ill advised attempt someone made to go inside me and three wide in turn 6 lap 1, the racing around me was pretty clean. This was definitely the least amount of prep I've had in a long time for a practice race - so top 10 is a better than expected result. The top 2 were in their own time zone - look like I need to step up the pace just to avoid getting lapped!
CoachMK21
There certainly was a big disparity in qualifying times, 1:32 - 1:40. And a few fast people didn't have a Q time, so they started at the back. I witnessed some pretty aggressive driving when others tried to pass slower cars, especially in the Esses (T2-T5) section. That's a terrible place to try to push your way through on a slower/maybe less aware driver. It was really fun to get the band back together and race with this group. I made the mistake of accelerating just a bit early exiting the pits and got a 40 second speeding penalty...that hurt. But I kept the car clean. I need to figure out why I suck so much at T7.

I am not sure what the penalty for that infraction is, but I can say that if you do any service while serving a penalty you earn an extra 25 seconds. Make sure you uncheck all pit items, including fast repair and windshield tear offs. I think its possible that you turned a 15 second into a 40 second by doing service while serving the penalty or perhaps the iRacing equivalent of Jimmie thought you needed to sit just a little longer.

I came in for my regularly scheduled pit stop. Took fuel and tires, then just accelerated a bit too soon got it gave me 40 seconds. Then came back in the next lap to sit for 40 seconds and didn't do any service. I had to quickly uncheck everything, fuel, quick repair and tires.

Yea I caught some lappers in the esses and it cost me multiple seconds to @Justin Hall but I think he caught the same lapper later on the next lap.

Rapido
Please note that for the race tonight (and for subsequent rounds should I think it necessary) I will be spectating in the capacity of race control. I don't intend to get overly involved, and all protests should still be handled via the established form, but I will be monitoring the race for driver conduct and will be issuing warnings/penalties if I see anything particularly egregious. That said, I trust the grid to continue to race with respect and goodwill and so hope to not be involved. Good luck to all involved, leave space, and race as you wish to be raced. Rapido
Congratulations to all the finishers tonight, was great to see a large turnout for round 1 of the season and I saw some really good driving throughout the field. Congratulations to Zihao, Mark, and Alex for their podium finishes, this is not an easy venue with a large field. Some things I noted from the race control booth: If you are intentionally letting another car past for position - move offline and make it very obvious; don't assume everyone is listening to the radio channels When lapping slower traffic, try to leave at least half a car's width to account for netcode and vision constraints If you spin, BOTH FEET IN I hope everyone enjoyed their race tonight and looking forward to seeing everyone at VIR in a couple of weeks time, and please feel free to reach out to me via the forum or on Discord if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the series.
cowboys647
Great race guys! My mini-race recap: I’m still getting a handle on this mustang and even after the practice race and this one I was ~1 second off pole. I’m hoping there was some drafting in that lap or else it’s going to be a struggle in this car. Quali 6th or 7th right behind Simon and just tried to stay clean and keep up with the front pack for as long as possible. We lost the draft from the front group by ~2 seconds and I had a run on the back straight and Simon let me by, then I botched 10A/B giving us ~3 seconds gap to the lead group. I pushed to try and close the gap and my VR headset voice activated command popped up covering the whole screen telling me my IP Address right as I was about to turn in for T7. I tried to close it and make the turn but ended up spinning before I could clear it and lost many places. Luckily I had no damage so I ran mid-pack for a while with some good clean racing and decided to pit early because of traffic. I made the dumb decision to take no tires because I never practice my pitstop and since I spent the whole first stint drafting I added an extra gallon of fuel for safety. Had a relatively uneventful race until the last 5-6 laps with Aaron Smith catching me from behind. We ended up running into lapped traffic into 10A and I was able to use one as a pick to pass on the inside and hold on to 6th with him right behind me. Definitely had a ton of adrenaline pushing 100% on those old tires. Looking forward to my mainstay in the Miata! Also, Love Racing will be putting out some more hot lap videos for the upcoming tracks to help get everyone up to speed so keep an eye out for those!
