JDM swap paperwork

Recommended Posts

I'm working on claiming the BP5A/BP4W swap in the me otter.... I imported a few of them a couple years ago and finally going down that road.  I've rounded up all the documentation needed and will have a healthy binder on hand of receipts, import papers, documents showing power within 3%, tech desk articles, yada yada.

Unfortunately I'm sorta going in circles in how to actually claim it.  Maybe it's easy and I'm overthinking.

4.5.6.1. says a swap within 3% is no points.  OK, that's good, it's well documented within 3% so zero points it is.

4.5.6.2.2. Teams must use the US/Canadian advertised horsepower in the swap calculator. <-not sure why the swap calculator is in the picture, and it gets 50pts. Oh well 4.5.6.1 says no points so no points.  Good.

So finally the question- Those with basic JDM swaps meeting the 3% rule, how does this look?

-Fill out the 2023 swap form as best it applies, ignoring the referenced swap calculator again, also JDM don't have VINS

-Note the swap in the comments section at the bottom of the electronic tech sheet

-Note in the log book

-Keep supporting documentation on hand

That stand up to the extra scrutiny our hopeful future victories will bring?

I read it as 2 different cases, one for stock replacement and one for swaps:

- Replace US Miata engine with "identical" 3% JDM Miata engine = 0pts

- Swap in a Honda into your BMW. You can use a JDM engine as long as it's "identical", 3% HP, etc. That way you can use a K24A2 from Japan and not from the US.

But never done a swap

Agreed, you're either doing the (generally same power) JDM swap for better engine availability, or you're doing a swap for mo powah baby.

I'm in the first category and there's no issues with it fitting the ruleset, but as they say, the job's not done till the paperwork is done.  I can't really tell how it fits into tech sheets if at all.
