New road course at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Recommended Posts

From Grassroots Motorsports, https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/news/plans-for-a-new-road-course-at-charlotte-motor-speedway/.

Charlotte Motor Speedway will begin construction on a new road course within 90 days with plans to be completed within a year of breaking ground. The article mentions it would be a club style track, but would consider bringing in outside groups. I hope ChampCar makes the effort to get on the track. Thoughts?

Yay!  I will never go back to the roval.  I hated that track and didn't want to do my 2nd stint in the 2019 championship.  Ended up getting back in the car against my better judgment.  Some of yall know how that ended....

Glad its coming.

However... there is no traditional pit lane in the above plan.  We're not the target; don't plan on 'racing' here.  Roval has a pit lane so if we race at Charlotte it'll be there.

I made the assumption that the pit line would be between the final turn (upper right) and turn 2 (or maybe 3, depending on how they count the big sweeping turn 1). I'd hope they have something that can be used. ChampCar does some untraditional pit lanes, like Harris Hill, but that's not realistic with really big car counts like Charlotte would draw.

Padock space would have to be on the north side of Morehead Rd.  This is just a preliminary sketch maybe they have a real plan that has room for Padock and Pit lane and this is just marketing.

Track day stuff this place will be great.  Lemons fine.  Chumpcar, I'm not sold.  (Till I see more)

There are several tracks we can't use because they arn't built to a racing standard: NC Car https://nccar.us/ , North Florida Motorsports Park, Hutchinson Island, Roebling Road (no bridge), Mini Dega, Mephis International Raceway.  Do you want more examples?   Until I see more this place is with these; in my book.

Rockingham won't pass SCCA safety standards for HPDE or road racing currently. We've made suggestions, but they don't seem interested or capable of spending the money.

I do not know the difference in the standards, but NASA is racing at Rockingham this year (10/14-15).

Here are a few options:

  1. Swap VIR South for Rockingham , Swap VIR North for VIR Full
  2. Swap VIR South for VIR Full , Swap VIR North for Rockingham  (seems like Chin always has north in march tho)
  3. Slide Rockingham in during the break in early may (hard on the CC crew though as they are out west in April/May).

Am I subtle enough with my suggestion on a Full course race that is not the 24? hahaha

I like the idea of a full course VIR race that is a one day 14hr or a two day 8+7. We just don’t have the manpower to run a 24hr race even though it’s one of the things I want to do

Heard some good news yesterday that sounds like progress towards the needed changes might be a possibility.
