Can I use a center net restraint as a window net?

Recommended Posts

Just sent my Boxster off to the cage builder and the builder said lately many of his customers are using a center net on the side as a window net.  If anyone doing that in Champcar and is it legal?

I like the way it connects and releases....always hated the seatbelt buckle style connection on the typical window nets.

Thoughts?

I thought this would have been a hard NO, but there was an EC BMW doing just this at Harris Hill in March. In addition, their center net wasn't very tight.

Personally, I don't feel a center net does the job of keeping debris out and keeping arms in, like a traditional window net.

I would suggest you reform your question to see if SFI 37.1 nets can be used in the window opening, assuming that is your intent.

Unless you are wanting to use something not SFI/FIA rated (which I assume is going to be a hard NO, based on the current rule)?

SFI 27.1 nets have additional protection against ingress of items from outside the car (i.e. smaller gaps between the webs or a mesh panel), but I would say the current rule allows either if it fits the opening.

FYI - WRL clarified their rule on this for 2023, SFI 37.1 were previously allowed for window openings, but now 27.1 is required.

NO .   They are not a window net and far from the coverage needed..

I did give a 1rw at Harris Hill as no other option was available. Race director was in the loop as always. Saftey is a thing but some events have to be handled the best we know how to at that time.. the next one may have to put arm restraints on to enter the track.

Center nets often do not have a good quick release system as well.  The only way a center net should be used as the driver side net is if you want to have an additional level of head containment in with your seat and 1: you have windows or 2: use it in conjunction with a standard window net.
