Is there any way to know how many cars were still running at the end?

I wasn't there, so I'm just going off of the MyLaps results. Looks like 40 cars took the green and checker for the full length, 24:0x hours. Some of those could have been off during the middle, of course. That 40 does not include 3 teams that were very close, 23+ hours, including the 4th place RVA Graphics & Wraps team that had to stop 15 minutes short of the finish.

From #420 - Brakecheck

Holy crap what a challenging weekend. This is (I believe) our 12th running at the 24 in the same car. We were constantly getting kicked in the shin with new methods of failure.

Left very early Friday morning and were at the track ~9:30. Trailer blew a tire out 3 miles from the track. I kept convincing myself this wasn’t a bad omen.

Had another team with us (their first race) so we were helping them fix their car so they could get it through tech.

Started the race Saturday morning, flagtronics showed green flag and no flags at stations so me and another car took off. Coming down the back straight, traffic still piled up driving “yellow pace” so went filed back in. Earned a BF for that. Went back out and had a fairly un-eventful stint. Car was running well. Track was –insanely- hot. Again, been to VIR many times but for some reason, this race was hot as hell. My butt was on fire. Came in a tad early because the heat was so distracting (even w/ a cool shirt setup). Had several off-tracks and got to the point I realized I was too distracted with the heat and needed to come in.  Had communicated to team to put fittings on another cool shirt we could sit on in-line with our cool shirt so we could have a ‘cool-butt’ setup.

Next driver went out. Towards the end of their stint, they were punted coming into the front straight. Another driver tried to shove their car between us and the grass. Checked our car, no (apparent) damage other than some rubber circles.

Put next driver in, and they took off. Started getting some smoke in the car towards the end of their stint. Pulled in. Everything covered in fluids. Investigation pointed that steering rack was leaking; one of the hoses that transfers fluid side to side, the “stamped” part of the hose for the fitting cracked. Had to pull the rack to replace.

Goes until next driver says car is handling funny. Pull in, check all suspension, everything looks good. Look at tires – (should have done first), driver managed to pick up every piece of rubber on the track. (They are an exceptionally slow driver so putting in a PiP to get them up to speed figuratively and literally.) Needed more speed to keep tires clean.

Next driver goes out. Halfway through their stint, they launched the serpentine belt. Spares I had were to short. ****. Drove into town and got a replacement.

Get car back on track. Car was running well until car develops a miss. One of the plug wires failed and was arcing. Fixed and back on track.

Keep running before my next stint ~5:30-7:30. Driver coming in mentions power steering was failing. 3 laps into my stint, power steering completely failed – no power steering. I think I kinked the hose on my coolshirt as well so I’m driving the car with no power steering and no cooling. Thankfully, still cool out so I could manage.

When I come in, replace power steering pump.

Car goes back out and is running well.

A team we traveled with, their car (blue infiniti) died about 3 laps in. (Oil filled w/ stripper glitter). My guys were tired so I offered the last spot to one of them; been friends with them for about 20 years. This was her first time ever driving a car on the track (though she was a spotter for NASCAR for years). She did surprisingly well. Couple laps in, she was dive bombed on T3, knocking her around. Came in, cut off the dangling damaged pieces and sent her back out and she took the flag.

I can not emphasize how constantly impressed and thankful I am towards the champ car staff and the VIR facility. Every year, this race gets better. Already scheming for next year.

I see the S2000 was disqualified in Class B? Did someone petition them at inspection?

I am awaiting the writeups.

Their Mustang was DQd as well.

Also mad respect for racing a 2002 Hyundai Elantra.

Thanks. We are definitely an oddball of the group.

Was just wondering since the NC blew up at the 19hr mark and then the S2000 got disqualified we were SOOOOO close to P1. Would have been an even more triumphant ending for us. Either way, had a total blast and we are already talking about the next race.

Any idea how many laps down they started? The S2000 starts at 520 and from video I saw, it at least had a wing.

You are true heroes. I can not convey to you how happy I was every time I saw you on the track.

F Class winner 11th overall!

The Mini is a fantastic car to drive!  I think I spent more time running side by side with folks in my three stints than I did all of last season.  No one seemed to be willing to back down and that made for a lot of fun for a car that can drive just about anywhere.

I had so much fun driving the Wittenauer Motorsports Mini Cooper. 3rd stint on Saturday.

I was considerably slower than the other drivers, but I hit no one, I kept it on track, and never spun.

I was a bit concerned with the over-aggressiveness of the Wheels America drivers. A quick brake check would have fixed those flashing headlights as I was told to protect the radiator.  But just decided to leave be.

????

We have a momentary on our LED bar too.  It is the "Please see me and leave some room" button.  The intent is not to be a pain about it but help give everyone an advantage at avoiding contact.  I've driven slow cars and fast cars.  Getting point-bys and getting alerted to someone approaching are one in the same.

Previous question - how many cars finished?  Not sure, but at 10am I counted either 40 or 41 on track.  None were in the pit lane at the time.

Besides the heat, it was a good event.

NLS Racing VIR24 “Race” report:

I debated even writing a race report for this weekend as we never even started the race with either car. We busted ass working 6-7 days a week for the month leading up to this one. 2 fresh engines and checked and or replaced every component top to bottom. We had some updates for our cooling issues, or so we thought. The practice in the morning on Friday started well w/ no issues. As the day got hotter, so did the temps on the 240. It never really overheated but was hotter than we’d like to see leading up to the 24. Then the engine started to feel flat, losing 3 secs a lap. Ultimately, we made the decision to pull the plug and focus on the 300. It was running nice and cool and laying down some good lap times. All was good until it wasn’t. 300 pulled off track, not a word from our renter. Finally back to the pits and found the clutch exploded. Swapped it out, but now it won’t run. Trans back out to find the tone ring f’ed up. Fixed that and all back together for a second time. Still won’t run. Diagnosed until 10pm until we came to the realization that the rental driver had to have money shifted it causing internal damage. He never said a word to us, told us what happened, nothing. Just left and rented another seat. And then proceeded to money shift their car…twice! Fortunately for them, it didn’t hurt the engine. Needless to say, he will NEVER drive our car again. We loaded up all our crap Saturday morning and stayed to watch the race. We had a good time drinking and just hanging out. If you saw people partying in the Villas, that was us. What a $h!t show of a weekend for us. We’ll reassess our issues and be back. Probably not until VIR North. Over and out.

Those weekends suck and sorry to hear about it. Pretty crappy of your arrive and drive to not even inform you. Do you all have onboard cameras that you could use to see what happened? Contract you make rentals sign?

We do have cameras but unfortunately, they weren't running during the test day. We also have a new data system in the 300 that we are still learning, so we had live data but no logged data. And of course, we weren't watching it at the exact moment the issue happened. You can bet cameras and data will be rolling the next time it hits the track. Yes, we have a contract all renters sign but how do we enforce it unless the guilty party admits to it? Go to court and fight it out? We'll see how it all shakes out. It just sucks for everybody. We promised renters a car and they had their own money tied up in travel, hotels, etc. and we didn't deliver. Luckily the rest of the renters were cool w/ the situation and some even found other rides, so not all was lost for them.

Totally get that dude but you were also out of the race along with the time and money you invested in the same things and now your car needs repairs. I'm not alluding to going to court but def use that to talk to the person to maybe illicit some sort of response and hopefully you can figure out what transpired.

I had the 4-6pm stint, and every time I came up the esses I'd see the full balcony at the villas. Looked like the second most fun thing happening at VIR that weekend.

That would've been us. We were out there all night til around 12. Started drinking when the green flag dropped and didn't stop all day. We could've left around 11am and went home and pouted, instead we made the most of a bad situation.

Thank you sir. We are so very happy to be a part of the Champ Car community and have learned so much over the last few years. We appreciate all of the veteran teams giving us advice and suggestions to make our adventure even better.

Any word on why both of those RTR cars were DQ'd?

In process. The two that were responsible for this were either still driving home yesterday or has a full time job. I sent them to the next person to review them at 5:30 this morning after getting the other tech’s approval email when I woke up this morning.

In a nutshell, hold your horses. They aren’t so exciting that you need a bucket of popcorn to read them. :)
