Who's at fault??

Since Chumpcar has earned a reputation for tight wheel-to-wheel action, I thought I'd share some of my video from Christmas at Laguna Seca.

I'm carefully minding my business in our overweight, underpowered (all-wheel-drive) Subaru but I manage to go toe-to-toe with some of Germany's finest engineering.

I blame the course designer. They should have made a little more run-off room on the right. ;)

Course *re*designer, you mean -- used to be Laguna was all left turns until one hit the Corkscrew; then someone decided it had to have the fiddly bit in the infield, and screwed it up beyond repair.

Nice...that is exactly where one bmw started spinning and hit another bmw (2nd place car?) and then clipped the front of me. I will have to dig out the gopro and try to post that up. It's good. Also was told by the first bmw that they had a camera running backwards at the time.

Edit: Here is a very similar tank slapper that ended a bit worse...crash at 3:10.

Since the subject of this topic is the question, who is at fault? I thought I'd give $0.02.

In CoF's racing incident, the black BMW has some fault. For one, it was this car that initially lost control. The other cars maintained control. And, not only did they lose control initially by driving off the pavement, but did several swerves during a prolonged loss of control moment. The majority of the fault is clearly with this car.

The camera car and green car was accelerating, assuming the loss of control had been resolved, but it hadn't. These cars/drivers could have stayed on the brakes or accelerated less strongly and avoided the contract that looks to have ended their day.

I really only write that to say, if you spin, both feet in. This is a classic example of why that rule exists. "Both feet in" would have saved both contacts and allowed all 3 cars to continue the race weekend.

I was driving the camera car and the clutch was to the floor once I saw #29 get loose. However I could have applied more brakes sooner to potentially avoid the hit to my car...oops. At the time it was hard to imagine #29 would start flailing all over the place...it looked like he was just going into the dirt. The #31 car was blocking the view a bit and when I heard him hit the gas I thought it was all clear and lifted the brakes some. Maybe they had no choice but to gas it at that point. If they didn't get clipped the hit on my car could have been worse. A new fender and all is well...we got lucky. Only spent 10 minutes banging on it in the pits and headed back out faster than before...will have to write down the those new alignment specs. #31 continued on to take 2nd place.

I think I would have ended up in the same predicament as you. That's really a shame, it looked like you were having a really fun race!
