Bongle
A mixed weekend for me - Slimer blew up early due to driver error, but WifiLapper garnered lots of praise (and lots of improvement suggestions) from the my friends at Johnda Deere who used it to help them to two podium finishes. Also, the weather was wonderful, and since we didn't end up spending much on gas or use up many tires, it mitigated the costs quite a bit.The final 2 hours of the race on Sunday were nuts - At 3pm, the 1st (Van Winden at the time) and 2nd (Johnda Deere) place cars were a car length apart, and stayed that way for 5-10 laps. Some amazing and clean racing.I got some neat data traces from the time Slimer's car was running. Here's a comparison of our fastest lap vs the lap where the engine broke:Green trace - popped-engine lapPink trace - FTD lapThe spot with the square in it is when the misshift occurred - you can see the sudden deceleration as 2nd gear catches, and then the rest of the lap's acceleration is much less strong than the FTD lap.Video of the engine dying:[media]http://youtu.be/IGFpBNdFc0U
Guest jumped the shark
Ah, i was wondering what had happened to Slimer, sorry to hear that guys.
Bongle
Finished processing another one - this is the lap before our fastest lap, our fastest lap, and the lap after:[media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKRrQsy0UgcWe (well, the mechanically-adept guys on my team) managed to get the engine running again by 11am or so on Sunday, but the 1am timing adjustment must have been off by a tooth, so it wouldn't idle and was running rough. Another 2 hours of teardown and rebuilding wasn't looking very attractive for uncertain results, so we called it a day, packed up, and watched the rest of the race. swrving
A big thanks to Rick's crew and Cathy who came all the way from the west coast! You guys did a great job! What an interesting weekend for us! Nothing to fix Saturday night, but a pair of flats on Sunday at different times certainly didn't help the cause. We got as high as 5th after fixing one flat, but with the second flat back down to 12th and fought back up to 9th at the end. We're done with our Star Spec experiment, back to Azenis for the next event!A big thanks to the Mopar4Life and Johnda Deer guys for throwing tools our way to speed things up when we had to deal with the flats on Sunday! Now I need to sort through the 56 hours of GoPro footage from the 2 days and 4 different angles we had covered!Hope to see everyone who was at Shannonville out at Calabogie, and then some! Richard
I can only say that we had an absolutely terrific weekend and the car made it to the end of both races which is a testament to my teammates Matt, Mike and Nik and my son Richard who made the car awesome to look at and also had the laborious and ungrateful job of towing it back and forth! The guys spent considerable time and effort prior to the race and then quite a lot of time at the track making sure the car would run well, while I made a few jokes and said silent prayers. Apart from some tie rod and minor suspension issues we didn't have to make a single unscheduled stop and in my opinion that's a great accomplishment from a car that had never seen a race track until the pace lap Saturday morning. I have to thank my guys first and foremost! I had some great battles Saturday was running in the 2'10's consistently and was happy with the way the car performed. Sunday was a whole different story as the minor repairs made by Matt and Nik early Saturday morning and the eyeball alignment by Mike gave me a much better car and I was able to legitimately lead two laps before having to pit for fuel. I had an absolutely fantastic battle with the first Van Winden driver that lasted for at least 45 minutes and was able to run a few low 2 08's which was also fantastic for the CRX. I managed to pass and/or stay in front of the usual crop of podium finishers and that was satisfying in and of itself! Thanks to the Canadian ChumpCar staff for running a fantastic event and to all the competitors for keeping it green the entire weekend! Congrats to the podium finishers and the race winners, Rising Sun and Johnda Deere! A special note of thanks and appreciation to Andrew and Chris from Johnda for installing our cage, Phil from Slimer for his invaluable advice and help, Chris from Streetrate Parts, Bytown Brawlers for the die, and to all the other teams that returned our tools intact! If I've forgotten someone in this post, forgive me...!
lordmulgath
Slimer's Weekend as stated above was not the greatest. The car was running well, but not perfect. As one of the guys from constipation racing observed they should not have been able to blow by us on the back straight, but they did (turns out there was a gaping dry rot hole in part of our intake after the MAF sensor). Anyway, we all had a great time until I got in. Saturday @ ~11am, after Stan proved how reliably and quickly the car can drive, I got in and on lap 3, I over-reved the engine on a missed shift and dropped a single valve(I know, just one, amazing isn't it). The engine needed to be fixed. After some major searching and finally breaking down and asking the other E36 team we got a lead on a valve. The guy who we got it from GAVE it to us along with the appropriate retainer and spring!!!! THANK YOU EUROTECH!!!!! YOU GUYS RULE!! Then it was onto the hard part, of actually installing and re-assembling Slimer in the paddock without engine hoists or any of the fancy BMW special tools. After a heroic effort by Chris M, Chris N, Art and Myself, we got the engine back together @ 1AM. We called it a night since we were all exhausted and starting to make little mistakes here and there. In the morning, Chris M, being the amazing gung-ho team chief he is, woke up and started putting the rad and the rest of the car back together. After 2 phone calls I managed to drag my butt out of bed and back to the track in time to help put the rest of the front of the car together. Moment of truth and the car turned over and fired..... then died. We turned it over again, it ran rough, then died..... It turns out we set the timing wrong, probably by one tooth on the chain. The good part is we pulled off something amazing by doing the repair to the point where the car CAN run (and get itself onto the trailer). The sad part is it was going to take a couple of hours to get the timing fixed and we at best we might be able to run 2-3 hours of the race. At that point, everyone was exhausted and frustrated, we opted to just pack up and try and enjoy the rest of the race/weekend. I know we were all thoroughly disappointed.Big congrats to all the winners, and all the other competitors who managed to run the entire weekend. I'd like to give a big thanks to everyone else who tried to help us out and give us some direction. Dan from Competition motors , and Paul from Van Winden Racing, you guys and both of your teams are class acts. Huge thanks to EuroTech for getting us the valve and retainer. Thanks to the Bytown Brawlers for all your help and lending of tools.Oh and of the ~38 liters of beer I brought I only have 3 left. I'm glad people enjoyed it. crappy contour
Crappy Contour team had a great weekend. Still battling an intermitent loss of power issue. Thanks to organizers, helpers & all racers that made it great. On to calaboge.
Two.Slo
Constipation Racing initiated a new chump, converted a straight tire rod to a pretzel and then back again with a jack handle and hammer and even crept up the leader board at some points. lots of fun and we enjoyed some great racing weather. Cant wait for Calabogie either
Bongle
Another interesting look at some data. Johnda Deere very nicely sent me their data DB from wifilapper so I could run some performance tests with it (and gave me permission to post it anywhere I wanted). Some might not know that near the end of the race on Sunday, JD was having some fuel supply issues - the car kept cutting out, but then would start back up. At some points, their drivers were driving with one hand on the key down the straights, ready to restart the car each time it died. The issue was intermittent and cleared up a bit after some slow laps, but around 1-2pm it was looking like they might miss the podium or even have to retire. Here's one of their fast laps from Sunday compared to a lap with fueling issues:Note the slow jagged bit in the middle - that's the car running, then dying, then running, then dying. Bongle
What does all this mean...the wavy lines and all...i need a beer.Haha, it's a speed/distance graph. Further right means further in the lap, and higher up means a greater speed. The repetitive shapes you see are the car gradually accelerating, then hitting a braking zone and slowing suddenly. You can learn tons of stuff about how your driver is doing and where to pick up time by analyzing them. The blue one is the lap with fueling issues - you can see in the first half of the lap, they're failing to accelerate through corners that they used to fly through at much higher speeds. The car keeps accelerating, then slowing down, then accelerating again when it should really just be accelerating.
Guest Lee519
great weekend, and some great racing. who's got pics?!
Bongle
I've got a couple, but they're mainly of Slimer's torn-apart engine bay and our very tired faces. I'll see if I can get them up tonight.
Bongle
Nuts, I had even fewer than I thought. Sorry everybody, I brought my nice camera fully intending on getting a bunch of nice pictures, but I was otherwise sidelined. I didn't even get a picture of our car on-track.Week before race: Found mouse nest in slimer's dash. Were very pleased we got that problem out of the way early. Surely that was our hiccup for the race, right?Saturday morning: Things are going great. Stan's turning consistent laps and even some quick ones (down into the 2:12s), the sun is out, WifiLapper is sending telemetry (at the time even from Johnda as well), all is well for Team Slimer:
Bongle
Midnight-ish, Sat/Sun: Things are not going great and haven't been going great for 12 hours. We're cold, tired, and discouraged due to a single dropped valve.Afternoon Sunday: Congrats to all the podium teams, especially Van Winden, whose team members were instrumental in our acquisition of the replacement valve we needed:
