Daytona Questions

Recommended Posts

I'm Curious.

  1. What track configuration did Chumpcar run, how was it different from the Rolex 24hr?
  2. What sort of topspeeds did cars hit? (in the dry)
  3. What types of cars were in the top ten?

I was impressed by the dry laptimes.

Not sure if you'll get a solid and accurate answer on speeds unless someone had a speed gun. My needle was past 165 but it's not accurate. A few cars passed us in the dry but not too many though.

Top 10

1)Probe

2)Saab

3)Benz

4)

5)Very well driven Miata

6)Saab

7)BMW

8)Z

As you can see it was very diverse

According to our gearing calculations we could hit about 142 coming across the start/finish line. During my session in hte dry I could run with pretty much everyone out there. The lead sled lincoln, benz, 540 green/white 240sx, turbo Z and probably a few others appeared to be about the same range.

We were in #102 brown V8 first gen RX-7. Our big let down is the .68 5th gear. Shift to 5th at 5000 and it drops down to around 3500 rpms and take a while to climb back up.

One of our drivers put the auto box in 3rd through T3 and manually shifted to overdrive to find we were capable of 140 but he felt it was too stressful to repeat, I left it in OD the entire time to hit 130ish and had to watch for the other 5-7 cars that would sneak up on the outside doing 140+

Sorry TAJ about that one pinch, the stress wasn't wasted as I learned and told the rest of the team how easy it is to make oopsies.

2. Who cares, it rained. The infield was like a skating rink. Us guys from up north that live in snow 6 months of the year had a slight advantage as our 70 hp car was one of the faster ones out there in the rain.

No worries about the pinch! We still had a little breathing room between us and I still had a little room up to the wall.

Our little Civic would hit just over 125 at around 7,500 rpm and then would slow back to 120 when shifted into 5th the jump was to much looks like we'll be searching for a different tranny for next time

We were hitting 135 wet or dry. Thats all we had. We just held it there a long time. Brown RX-7 was crazy fast on the banking. Had a blast running with you.

Our bone-stock Euro E-34 535i (M30 engine w/5 speed manual) was indicating 220km/h (135) which I feel was pretty accurate, but there was a substantial headwind on the front straight right through the tri-oval that I feel kept top speeds somewhat tamed for watever that's worth.

We never got above 120 in the Miata. But we knew we were bringing a knife to a gunfight, so we're not complaining. 'lil Chumpchange Miata was faster than us by a good margin, nice driving guys! We have work to do before VIR.

Top lap by a non-EC car I think was a 2:19. That's fast! My best lap was a 2:32.1. oh well...

I thought some of the cars were pretty darn loud which completely interfered with my listening to audio books on the factory stereo during my stint. I had to rewind repeatedly on the banking and only got through one or two chapters. Was going to protest but the tropical storm winds blew away my protest sheet by the time the fuel ran low.
