Iowa 24 Hrs - It's On!

It's overcast today in the cornfields of Iowa. Looks like we'll have around 30 cars to the grid. Work was feverish in the NASCAR garages yesterday and last night. We'll maybe it was the moonshine being passed around. I just hope no one is blind today.

We are expecting rain, lots of it. The races here have been consistently full of rain and this one is no different.

Some of the usual suspects aren't here and they'll be missed. Those teams include North Loop Motorsports, Team Eggboy, BAR (British American Ringers), Slugworks, Holy Rollers, Chump Faces, etc.

Looks like the secret minions of Eggboy Nation are EVERYWHERE! We were hit!

I am not in Iowa this weekend, much to my chagrin. Had hoped to be providing live updates but it did not work out.

Instead I am working on another race car project, my 1960 SAAB 93F ice racer. Neighbor and Fart-hinder driver Izzy (Tony Israelson, not the Egg Boy Izzy) stopped by last week and we decided to see if we could get the engine to turn over after sitting for maybe ten years. We got it to turn over, and to fire on a couple of cylinders (it only has 3), but only when gas/oil was poured down the carb.

So I am attempting to re-plumb the fuel system this weekend. Bought a new 12v fuel pump and hope to get it all running soon. Of course it won't move until we can get the brakes fixed. The front drums are rusted to the brake shoes.

Whew, just climbed out of the car. What a fun two hour stint. Had some great racing with the guys from ABR (it was Dave), the Green Neon from Canada (who kicked my butt), the Plymouth #39, and JBGOTM in the Pontiac Firebird.

Some really close, close racing and great times.

My Lil Pony is making a huge racket under acceleration. Sounds like they broke a header or something. Still going strong, sounds like it's going to blow up.

The Triumph is doing consistent laps and not letting the rain get them down.

The rain is now more of a heavy mist.

Alright. I feel better about being schooled by the Canadian Neon. Rumor in the paddock is that the driver had Indy car professional experience. Well, I've got crapcan experience and it's more fun less filling than pro experience.

The Neon has been taking us to school. Congrats guys on building a wicked fast car!

Jason and the #80 Mustang had serious issues and have spent the last several hours in the garage. Looks like they put in a new motor.

Fine Sausage Racing busted their timing belt on the warmup laps, messing up the valves. They didn't have a replacement and scrambled a team member to drive to Omaha to pick up a new belt. They have a new head on the car and now just need the guys to get back from Omaha to finish up. They will be back. I had a great dozen laps with those guys last year at the Chumpionship. Great Team.

Alex brought the Nissan 240SX instead of the Opel which is getting a Ford Escort driveline. The car broke a rocker and now has zero compression in the #2 cylinder. They are done for the weekend.

The Plymouth has been back to the garage a couple of times but they are back out there. V8 screaming

The track has had some technology issues. The tracks connection to the internet is down so Chumpcar can't send out the live timing so we have no idea what order we're in. I would guess we're 10th or 11th.

They put in the penalty laps at the 6 hour mark no doubt due to the technology issues and internet connection.
