Snake
Terrible decision to cancel the VIR24. Run a NL 24, but don't cancel the VIR one makes no sense. What makes even less sense is trying to charge the same price for the 8+8 they are going to replace the 24 @ VIR with. . 8 LESS hours of racing for the same price. No thanks! Our teams have zero interest in either race now and will be looking at another series to fill the date void. Our teams have zero interest in either race now and will be looking at another series to fill the date void. So, let me get this right... Facts: 1) Chumpcar ADDED a race to the schedule 2) Chumpcar changed the location of 1 format of 1 race 3) Chumpcar's costs most likely don't change that much between a 24 and a double 8 (the workload DOES change for Chumpcar) 4) You want to leave the series because of a venue change. As stated in several threads, email Mike if you want the VIR 24 to continue.
Jer
Some teams might take their ball and go home because for one year the 24 got moved. VIR would still be twin races, and likely host a 24 again and again in the future. Those twin races will lose a few teams, and gain a few teams. Jeez you'd think the sky is falling.
Technical Advisory Committee Chris Huggins Posted August 16, 2017 Technical Advisory Committee Report Share Posted August 16, 2017 Price goes up Hours of racing go down VIR 24 has been an annual event for 6 years. What reason to make this change? The event just freaking sold out?

We would be looking into other series to fill the void of the race as we aren't interested in NL or traveling that far to VIR for a double 8, especially at the same cost to us for less racing. I think Lemons runs a 24, but I believe that's in California. If you want to go to WRL, their only 24 is outside of Denver, Co. The 24 will return to VIR, it just won't be every year. I don't think any other series in North America even runs a 24 hour race. NL will sell out too. We are trying to appease a lot of racers, and there has been demand for NL too. Perhaps down the road we could do 2 24s but it's very taxiing on staff and admin. Edited August 16, 2017 by Jer

frankrehnelt
Why not make the NL 8+8 the first year and see if this pent up demand for NL is really there? Talk is cheap but actually entering is another thing. VIR24 is a known winner. Why mess with it for an unknown?

It gives you time to hand out, fix your car, party, drink beer, etc... I just want to run this track with some other fast cars! We have raced with Chump in both the VIR 24 and a race at Nelson's. I like them both for different reasons. In other words, I am probably not going to race the VIR 24 next year (or any other format at VIR - too far). I will race Nelson no matter what the format.

For some reference on the pent up demand and talk is cheap, there are already 7 cars signed up to race. We can compare that to the total amount of cars signed up for 2018 events at... 7. thewheelerZ
@frankrehnelt and @wvumtnbkr We normally (no idea about next year) have a race at Mosport for the Canada day long weekend. I wouldn't skip Mosport and do NL for an 8+8, but will for the 24. Edited August 16, 2017 by thewheelerZ

Justin9
I was actually planning on taking Barney, the new Camaro, up to VIR next year for the 24... probably not worth the drive for double 8s though... this was the first year I didn't attend the race, maybe it will bounce back some other time...
Jer
Guys Mike did not mean to open registration for NL yet and closed it when he realized his mistake. It's not full, it's not even officially open yet. All is well.

We ran a 14 hour race and it was not a sellout. I think part of the allure is just how much you have to overcome. It's remote, no amenities, hotels are 15+ minutes away, paddock is mostly grass and dirt, and the racing on the track is SPECTACULAR! It's a driver's track through and through, and a rhythm track too. If you're a good driver with large testicles, you will fall in love with it. I have never driven at NL, and to me the draw is that it is 24 hours of NL. I am way too conservative of a driver, so I hope I am not too slow at this track. Jer
You'll be fine and have fun. It's critical to get 1 and 2 correct, the penalty for lipping the carousel can be brutal, and you have to be able to not lift going through the kink. AND you have to be able to do it in a fog bank at 2 AM. I mean, how can you not love that!?! Completing a 24 is always satisfying, doing at NL is REALLY satisfying. If I could only do one race next year, it would be this one. Edited August 16, 2017 by Jer
